    Nonlinear ac susceptibility studies of high-TcT_c rings: Influence of the structuring method and determination of the flux creep exponent

    We have studied the influence of the patterning procedure on the critical current density of high-TcT_c YBa2_2Cu3_3O7δ_{7-\delta} thin rings using the nonlinear ac susceptibility method. At no applied dc magnetic field we have found that laser ablation degrades strongly the critical current density whereas ion beam etching has only a weak influence on it. From the measurements at different frequencies and dc magnetic fields we analyzed the influence of flux creep and obtained the field dependence of the flux creep exponent. Our data reconfirm the recently observed scaling relation for the nonlinear susceptibility response of type-II superconductors.Comment: 10 pages, 12 figure

    PU(2) monopoles and a conjecture of Marino, Moore, and Peradze

    In this article we show that some of the recent results of Marino, Moore, and Peradze (math.DG/9812042, hep-th/9812055) -- in particular their conjecture that all closed, smooth four-manifolds with b_2^+ > 1 (and Seiberg-Witten simple type) are of `superconformal simple type' -- can be understood using a simple mathematical argument via the PU(2)-monopole cobordism of Pidstrigach and Tyurin (dg-ga/9507004) and results of the first and third authors (dg-ga/9712005, dg-ga/9709022).Comment: 13 pages, 1 figure.     Targetfinder.org: a resource for systematic discovery of transcription factor target genes

    Targetfinder.org (http://targetfinder.org/) provides a web-based resource for finding genes that show a similar expression pattern to a group of user-selected genes. It is based on a large-scale gene expression compendium (>1200 experiments, >13 000 genes). The primary application of Targetfinder.org is to expand a list of known transcription factor targets by new candidate target genes. The user submits a group of genes (the ‘seed’), and as a result the web site provides a list of other genes ranked by similarity of their expression to the expression of the seed genes. Additionally, the web site provides information on a recovery/cross-validation test to check for consistency of the provided seed and the quality of the ranking. Furthermore, the web site allows to analyse affinities of a selected transcription factor to the promoter regions of the top-ranked genes in order to select the best new candidate target genes for further experimental analysis

    We have experimentally investigated a recombination-pumped soft-x-ray laser on a Lyman-α transition (135 Å) of hydrogenlike lithium. Furthermore, we have modeled the dynamics of this system, including the effects of the multipeaked electron distribution function that is obtained from the sequential, optical-field ionization of an atom.     The basic helix-loop-helix transcription factor hASH1, encoded by the ASCL1 gene, plays an important role in neurogenesis and tumor development. Recent findings indicate that the local oxygen tension is a critical determinant for the progression of neuroblastomas. Here we investigated the molecular mechanisms underlying the oxygen-dependent expression of hASH1 in neuroblastoma cells. Exposure of human neuroblastoma-derived Kelly cells to 1% O2 significantly decreased ASCL1 mRNA and hASH1 protein levels. Using reporter gene assays, we show that the response of hASH1 to hypoxia is mediated mainly by post-transcriptional inhibition via the ASCL1 mRNA 5'- and 3'-UTRs, while additional inhibition of the ASCL1 promoter was observed under prolonged hypoxia. By RNA pull-down experiments followed by MALDI/TOF-MS analysis, we identified heterogeneous nuclear ribonucleoprotein (hnRNP)-A2/B1 and hnRNP-R as interactors binding directly to the ASCL1 mRNA 5'- and 3'-UTRs and influencing its expression. We further demonstrate that hnRNP-A2/B1 is a key positive regulator of ASCL1, findings that were also confirmed by analysis of a large compilation of gene expression data. Our data suggest that a prominent down-regulation of hnRNP-A2/B1 during hypoxia is associated with the post-transcriptional suppression of hASH1 synthesis. This novel post-transcriptional mechanism for regulating hASH1 levels will have important implications in neural cell fate development and disease

    PU(2) monopoles and links of top-level Seiberg-Witten moduli spaces

    This is the first of two articles in which we give a proof - for a broad class of four-manifolds - of Witten's conjecture that the Donaldson and Seiberg-Witten series coincide, at least through terms of degree less than or equal to c-2, where c is a linear combination of the Euler characteristic and signature of the four-manifold. This article is a revision of sections 1-3 of an earlier version of the article dg-ga/9712005, now split into two parts, while a revision of sections 4-7 of that earlier version appears in a recently updated dg-ga/9712005. In the present article, we construct virtual normal bundles for the Seiberg-Witten strata of the moduli space of PU(2) monopoles and compute their Chern classes.Comment: Journal fur die Reine und Angewandte Mathematik, to appear; 64 page

    Khovanov homology is an unknot-detector

    We prove that a knot is the unknot if and only if its reduced Khovanov cohomology has rank 1. The proof has two steps. We show first that there is a spectral sequence beginning with the reduced Khovanov cohomology and abutting to a knot homology defined using singular instantons. We then show that the latter homology is isomorphic to the instanton Floer homology of the sutured knot complement: an invariant that is already known to detect the unknot.Comment: 124 pages, 13 figure
