    Source extraction and photometry for the far-infrared and sub-millimeter continuum in the presence of complex backgrounds

    (Abridged) We present a new method for detecting and measuring compact sources in conditions of intense, and highly variable, fore/background. While all most commonly used packages carry out the source detection over the signal image, our proposed method builds from the measured image a "curvature" image by double-differentiation in four different directions. In this way point-like as well as resolved, yet relatively compact, objects are easily revealed while the slower varying fore/background is greatly diminished. Candidate sources are then identified by looking for pixels where the curvature exceeds, in absolute terms, a given threshold; the methodology easily allows us to pinpoint breakpoints in the source brightness profile and then derive reliable guesses for the sources extent. Identified peaks are fit with 2D elliptical Gaussians plus an underlying planar inclined plateau, with mild constraints on size and orientation. Mutually contaminating sources are fit with multiple Gaussians simultaneously using flexible constraints. We ran our method on simulated large-scale fields with 1000 sources of different peak flux overlaid on a realistic realization of diffuse background. We find detection rates in excess of 90% for sources with peak fluxes above the 3-sigma signal noise limit; for about 80% of the sources the recovered peak fluxes are within 30% of their input values.Comment: Accepted on A&

    Credit Merchandising in the Postbellum American South: Information and Barriers to Entry

    Roger Ransom and Richard Sutch's research on the social and institutional changes in the postbellum American South, summarized in their One Kind of Freedom, raised many controversies. One of them concerns the degree of competition among the advancing merchants of the rural South. Ransom and Sutch's assertion that such merchants held a 'territorial monopoly'' is usually criticized as being at odds with the high level of postbellum entry in the rural merchandising sector and the absence of significant costs to entry. The question is still open, as shown by a recent special issue of Explorations in Economic History. This paper offers a contribution to this controversy by showing that high level of entry in the market and excessively high prices need not to be in conflict. In particular, using the theory of incomplete information games to study the competition between an advancing merchant and a potential entrant, the practice of over-pricing is shown to be an equilibrium behavior if interpreted as a way of signaling information about the market riskiness.credit merchandising, asymmetric information

    Electrical Impedance Tomography can provide images with well-defined characteristics using a fully non-linear reconstruction process when appropriate constraints are imposed on the solution to allow the ill-posed inverse problem to be solved. Using appropriate finite element discretizations for forward solution and inverse problem offers additional advantages in the image reconstruction process, such as (a) inclusion of prior knowledge, (b) generic model templating to adapt to, for example, individual head shapes, and (c) obtaining accurate results without unnecessary computational overhead. We have developed an efficient 3D non-linear reconstruction algorithm based on a regularized inverse conjugate gradient solver which incorporates (a) local image smoothness constraints, and (b) a number of optimisations which reduce the computing power required to obtain an accurate solution. We show results from applying this to various problems which arise in medical resistivity reconstruction given only surface potential measurements and demonstrate the importance of the FE discretization.     Finite element optimizations for efficient non-linear electrical tomography reconstruction

    Electrical Tomography can produce accurate results only if the underlying 2D or 3D volume discretization is chosen suitably for the applied numerical algorithm. We give general indications where and how to optimize a finite element discretization of a volume under investigation to enable efficient computation of potential distributions and the reconstruction of materials. For this, we present an error estimator and material-gradient indicator as a driver for adaptive mesh refinement and show how finite element mesh properties affect the efficiency and accuracy of the solutions

    IRAS 23385+6053: a candidate protostellar massive object

    We present the results of a multi-line and continuum study towards the source IRAS 23385+6053,performed with the IRAM-30m telescope, the Plateau de Bure Interferometer, the Very Large Array Interferometer and the James Clerk Maxwell Telescope. The new results confirm our earlier findings, namely that IRAS 23385+6053 is a good candidate high-mass protostellar object, precursor of an ultracompact HII_{II} region. The source is roughly composed of two regions: a molecular core 0.03÷0.04\sim0.03\div0.04 pc in size, with a temperature of 40\sim40 K and an H2_{2} volume density of the order of 107^{7} cm3^{-3}, and an extended halo of diameter \leq0.4 pc, with an average kinetic temperature of 15\sim 15 K and H2_{2} volume density of the order of 105^{5} cm3^{-3}. The core temperature is much smaller than what is typically found in molecular cores of the same diameter surrounding massive ZAMS stars. We deduce that the core luminosity is between 150 and 1.6×104L1.6\times10^{4}L_{\odot}, and we believe that the upper limit is near the ``true'' source luminosity. Moreover, by comparing the H2_{2} volume density obtained at different radii from the IRAS source, we find that the halo has a density profile of the type nH2r2.3n_{\rm H_{2}}\propto r^{-2.3}. This suggests that the source is gravitationally unstable. Finally, we demonstrate that the temperature at the core surface is consistent with a core luminosity of 103L10^3 L_{\odot} and conclude that we might be observing a protostar still accreting material from its parental cloud, whose mass at present is 6M\sim 6 M_{\odot}.Comment: 18 pages, 20 figure

    Time and time-frequency analysis of near-infrared signals for the assessment of ozone autohemotherapy long-term effects in multiple sclerosis

    Ozone autohemotherapy is an emerging therapeutic technique that is gaining increasing importance in treating neurological disorders. A validated and standard methodology to assess the effect of such therapy on brain metabolism and circulation is however still lacking. We used a near-infrared spectroscopy system (NIRS) to monitor the cerebral oxygenation of 9 subjects: 4 remitting-relapsing multiple sclerosis (MS) sufferers and 5 controls. Subjects were tested before, during, and after ozone autohemotherapy. We monitored the concentration changes in the level of oxygenated and deoxygenated haemoglobin, and in the level of the Cytochrome-c-oxidase (CYT-c). From the time and time-frequency analysis of the NIRS signals we extracted 128 variables, which were used to characterize the metabolic brain pattern during the therapy. We showed that by using only 7 NIRS variables out of 128 it is possible to characterize the metabolic brain pattern of the two groups of subjects. The MS subjects showed a marked increase of the CYT-c activity and concentration about 40 minutes after the end of the autohemotherapy, possibly revealing a reduction of the chronic oxidative stress level typical of MS sufferers. From a technical point of view, this preliminary study showed that NIRS could be useful to show the effects of ozone autohemotherapy at cerebral level, in a long term monitoring.
