    Black Holes in AdS/BCFT and Fluid/Gravity Correspondence

    A proposal to describe gravity duals of conformal theories with boundaries (AdS/BCFT correspondence) was put forward by Takayanagi few years ago. However interesting solutions describing field theories at finite temperature and charge density are still lacking. In this paper we describe a class of theories with boundary, which admit black hole type gravity solutions. The theories are specified by stress-energy tensors that reside on the extensions of the boundary to the bulk. From this perspective AdS/BCFT appears analogous to the fluid/gravity correspondence. Among the class of the boundary extensions there is a special (integrable) one, for which the stress-energy tensor is fluid-like.     Aerodynamic analysis of three advanced configurations using the TranAir full-potential code

    Computational results are presented for three advanced configurations: the F-16A with wing tip missiles and under wing fuel tanks, the Oblique Wing Research Aircraft, and an Advanced Turboprop research model. These results were generated by the latest version of the TranAir full potential code, which solves for transonic flow over complex configurations. TranAir embeds a surface paneled geometry definition in a uniform rectangular flow field grid, thus avoiding the use of surface conforming grids, and decoupling the grid generation process from the definition of the configuration. The new version of the code locally refines the uniform grid near the surface of the geometry, based on local panel size and/or user input. This method distributes the flow field grid points much more efficiently than the previous version of the code, which solved for a grid that was uniform everywhere in the flow field. TranAir results are presented for the three configurations and are compared with wind tunnel data

    Supervisor Cultural Responsiveness and Unresponsiveness in Cross-Cultural Supervision

    Thirteen supervisees’ of color and 13 European American supervisees’ experiences of culturally responsive and unresponsive cross-cultural supervision were studied using consensual qualitative research. In culturally responsive supervision, all supervisees felt supported for exploring cultural issues, which positively affected the supervisee, the supervision relationship, and client outcomes. In culturally unresponsive supervision, cultural issues were ignored, actively discounted, or dismissed by supervisors, which negatively affected the supervisee, the relationship, and/or client outcomes. European American supervisees’ and supervisees’ of color experiences diverged significantly, with supervisees of color experiencing unresponsiveness more frequently and with more negative effects than European American supervisees. Implications for research and supervision practice are discussed

    Immunization for Influenza A Virus by Intranasal Administration of Alphavirus Replicon Particles

    Improved vaccines are necessary to prevent swine influenza, especially in young growing pigs. The objective of this study is to determine whether intranasal vaccination with Alphavirus replicon particle (RP) vector vaccine prevents influenza A virus (IAV) in pigs. RP vaccine was prepared with the hemagglutinin (HA) gene of pandemic H1N1 influenza virus (A/California/04/2009, pH1N1). The efficacy of intranasal (IN) administration with pH1N1 HA RP was evaluated in two pig experiments. In the first experiment, prime/boost RP vaccination was administered IN/IN to pigs. In the second experiment, pigs were administered a one dose intramuscular (IM) or IN HA RP vaccine, or with a combination of IN/IM routes with an interval of three weeks. Results showed that two doses IN administration of HA RP did not protect pigs against IAV; one dose IM and combination IN/IM routes vaccination with HA RP reduced pneumonia significantly and partially inhibited virus shedding following homologous challenge

    Effects of Label Dose Permethrin Use in Yearling Angus Beef Bulls on Reproductive Function and Testicular Histopathology

    To eliminate the potential for insect borne diseases and improve productivity in cow-calf operations, many producers use pour-on pyrethroids. However, popular press literature has identified potential links between use of pyrethroids and reproductive function failures in bulls. While literature in mice and rats have reported potential endocrine disruption of sex steroids resulting from pyrethroid exposure, effects of pyrethroid use on bull fertility is still questionable. The objective of this study was to measure reproductive parameters in peripubertal Angus bulls using a commonly used pyrethroid pour-on. We hypothesized that use of a pyrethroid pour-on at labeled dose would have limited effects on semen and testicular characteristics. Results from this study revealed pyrethroid-treated bulls had greater spermatozoa head and midpiece abnormalities compared to controls, resulting in higher primary morphological abnormalities. Although some morphological semen parameters appear to be negatively affected by use of pyrethroid administration in bulls, biological relevance of this result needs to be further elucidated as the ability to pass a breeding soundness exam was not affected. Moreover, further research should be conducted to determine the effects of pyrethroid pour-ons on fertility when used with other pyrethroids such fly tags or perimeter sprays. Based on these results, pour-on pyrethroid use in yearling bulls is still recommended for label dose administration

    HUB City Steps: Methods and Early Findings From a Community-Based Participatory Research Trial to Reduce Blood Pressure Among African Americans

    Background: Community-based participatory research (CBPR) has been recognized as an important approach to develop and execute health interventions among marginalized populations, and a key strategy to translate research into practice to help reduce health disparities. Despite growing interest in the CBPR approach, CBPR initiatives rarely use experimental or other rigorous research designs to evaluate health outcomes. This behavioral study describes the conceptual frameworks, methods, and early findings related to the reach, adoption, implementation, and effectiveness on primary blood pressure outcomes. Methods: The CBPR, social support, and motivational interviewing frameworks are applied to test treatment effects of a two-phased CBPR walking intervention, including a 6-month active intervention quasi experimental phase and 12-month maintenance randomized controlled trial phase to test dose effects of motivational interviewing. A community advisory board helped develop and execute the culturally-appropriate intervention components which included social support walking groups led by peer coaches, pedometer diary selfmonitoring, monthly diet and physical activity education sessions, and individualized motivational interviewing sessions. Although the study is on-going, three month data is available and reported. Analyses include descriptive statistics and paired t tests. Results: Of 269 enrolled participants, most were African American (94%) females (85%) with a mean age of 43.8 (SD = 12.1) years. Across the 3 months, 90% of all possible pedometer diaries were submitted. Attendance at the monthly education sessions was approximately 33%. At the 3-month follow-up 227 (84%) participants were retained. From baseline to 3-months, systolic BP [126.0 (SD = 19.1) to 120.3 (SD = 17.9) mmHg; p \u3c 0.001] and diastolic BP [83. 2 (SD = 12.3) to 80.2 (SD = 11.6) mmHg; p \u3c 0.001] were significantly reduced. Conclusions: This CBPR study highlights implementation factors and signifies the community’s active participation in the development and execution of this study. Reach and representativeness of enrolled participants are discussed. Adherence to pedometer diary self-monitoring was better than education session participation. Significant decreases in the primary blood pressure outcomes demonstrate early effectiveness. Importantly, future analyses will evaluate long-term effectiveness of this CBPR behavioral intervention on health outcomes, and help inform the translational capabilities of CBPR efforts
