Improving cough and cold OTC medication use for children in Hardin County
Background: Ohio struggles with high infant mortality rates. This project was designed to combat incorrect use of cough and cold over-the-counter (OTC) medications. Parents or caregivers, especially those with low health literacy, often use these medications incorrectly in infants, sometimes leading to a fatal outcome.
Methods: Utilizing a three-pronged approach, this IRB-approved project addresses the issue of incorrect cough and cold OTC medications use for infants in Hardin County. Passive education was provided to community members via social media/flyers, educational interventions were performed with community members (virtual or in-person), and continuing professional development (CPD) was provided to pharmacists and pharmacy technicians in Hardin County.
Results: Passive education was disseminated in Hardin County. Thirty-eight community members attended the educational interventions; comparison of pre- and post-tests found statistically significant increases in knowledge (p=0.028). All participants indicated the information received was helpful, and 53% indicated they would change how cough and cold medications were administered. Thirteen professionals completed CPD; average post-test score=93%.
Conclusion: It is important to teach parents and caregivers about proper use of cough and cold OTC medications. Education classes were effective in increasing community members’ knowledge, and CPD for pharmacy professionals reinforced opportunities for patient counseling
Fundamental Limits of Classical and Quantum Imaging
Quantum imaging promises increased imaging performance over classical
protocols. However, there are a number of aspects of quantum imaging that are
not well understood. In particular, it has so far been unknown how to compare
classical and quantum imaging procedures. Here, we consider classical and
quantum imaging in a single theoretical framework and present general
fundamental limits on the resolution and the deposition rate for classical and
quantum imaging. The resolution can be estimated from the image itself. We
present a utility function that allows us to compare imaging protocols in a

Universal Robotic Gripper based on the Jamming of Granular Material
Gripping and holding of objects are key tasks for robotic manipulators. The
development of universal grippers able to pick up unfamiliar objects of widely
varying shape and surface properties remains, however, challenging. Most
current designs are based on the multi-fingered hand, but this approach
introduces hardware and software complexities. These include large numbers of
controllable joints, the need for force sensing if objects are to be handled
securely without crushing them, and the computational overhead to decide how
much stress each finger should apply and where. Here we demonstrate a
completely different approach to a universal gripper. Individual fingers are
replaced by a single mass of granular material that, when pressed onto a target
object, flows around it and conforms to its shape. Upon application of a vacuum
the granular material contracts and hardens quickly to pinch and hold the
object without requiring sensory feedback. We find that volume changes of less
than 0.5% suffice to grip objects reliably and hold them with forces exceeding
many times their weight. We show that the operating principle is the ability of
granular materials to transition between an unjammed, deformable state and a
jammed state with solid-like rigidity. We delineate three separate mechanisms,
friction, suction and interlocking, that contribute to the gripping force.
Using a simple model we relate each of them to the mechanical strength of the
jammed state. This opens up new possibilities for the design of simple, yet
highly adaptive systems that excel at fast gripping of complex objects.Comment: 10 pages, 7 figure
Temporality, vulnerability, and energy justice in household low carbon innovations
Decarbonisation and innovation will change the affordability of different domestic energy services. This has the potential to alleviate vulnerability to fuel poverty, but it could create new injustices unless the risks are preempted and actively mitigated. In this paper, we ask: In what ways can emerging low-carbon innovations at the household scale complement, and complicate, achieving energy justice objectives? Drawing from four empirical case studies in the United Kingdom, the paper highlights different risks that come from different types of innovation required to tackle different decarbonisation challenges. More specifically, it assesses four particular household innovations—energy service contracts, electric vehicles, solar photovoltaic (PV) panels, and low carbon heating—selected for their fit with a typology of incremental vs. radical technology and modest vs. substantial changes in user practices. It shows how in each case, such innovations come with a collection of opportunities but also threats. In doing so, the paper seeks to unveil the “political economy” of low-carbon innovations, identifying particular tensions alongside who wins and who loses, as well as the scope and temporality of those consequences
Observation of Macroscopic Structural Fluctuations in bcc Solid 4He
We report neutron diffraction studies of low density bcc and hcp solid 4He.
In the bcc phase, we observed a continuous dynamical behaviour involving
macroscopic structural changes of the solid. The dynamical behaviour takes
place in a cell full of solid, and therefore represents a solidsolid
transformation. The structural changes are consistent with a gradual rotation
of macroscopic grains separated by low angle grain boundaries. We suggest that
these changes are triggered by random momentary vibrations of the experimental
system. An analysis of Laue diffraction patterns indicates that in some cases
these structural changes, once initiated by a momentary impulse, seem to
proceed at a constant rate over times approaching an hour. The energy
associated with these macroscopic changes appears to be on the order of kT.
Under similar conditions (temperature and pressure), these effects were absent
