    An empirical study on employees’ theft behavior in insurance industry

    It is highly deplorable that every year, theft behavior among employees of insurance industry is growing throughout the world. A very significant sources of contraction (despite many costly technological and widespread security measures) which needs to be addressed and prevented. Employee and agent theft cannot be ignored as it causes significant losses to employers. This study investigates the workplace factors that affect the insurance employee and agent theft behavior. Although identifying theft is difficult, this study will help employers to further understand employees’ theft behavior. This study was conducted in two service small and medium organizations (two branches of insurance companies) in ALBORZ’s capital city, KARAJ. Data has been collected via questionnaire from 30 employees and agents consisting employees and supervisors of branches and agencies. According to the results, it must be acknowledged that compensation, organizational justice, internal control systems, penalties and personal characteristics were associated with employees' theft behavior, it is despite the fact that, no effect could be assumed for organizational ethics and requirement in this case. Nevertheless, poor financial status cannot be considered as the driving factor in pushing employees to steal property as well as increasing their theft behavior.     CpG island methylation of TMS1/ASC and CASP8 genes in cervical cancer

    <p>Abstract</p> <p>Background</p> <p>Gene silencing associated with aberrant methylation of promoter region CpG islands is an acquired epigenetic alteration that serves as an alternative to genetic defects in the inactivation of tumor suppressor and other genes in human cancers.</p> <p>Aims</p> <p>This study describes the methylation status of <it>TMS1</it>/<it>ASC </it>and <it>CASP8 </it>genes in cervical cancer. We also examined the prevalence of <it>TMS1</it>/<it>ASC </it>and <it>CASP8 </it>genes methylation in cervical cancer tissue and none - neo plastic samples in an effort to correlate with smoking habit and clinicopathological features.</p> <p>Method</p> <p>Target DNA was modified by sodium bisulfite, converting all unmethylated, but not methylated, cytosines to uracil, and subsequently amplified by Methylation Specific (MS) PCR with primers specific for methylated versus unmethylated DNA. The PCR product was detected by gel electrophoresis and combined with the clinical records of patients.</p> <p>Results</p> <p>The methylation pattern of the <it>TMS1</it>/<it>ASC </it>and <it>CASP8 </it>genes in specimens of cervical cancer and adjacent normal tissues were detected [5/80 (6.2%), 3/80 (3.75%)-2/80 (2.5%), 1/80 (1.2%) respectively]. No statistical differences were seen in the extent of differentiation, invasion, pathological type and smoking habit between the methylated and unmethylated tissues (<it>P </it>> 0.05).</p> <p>Conclusion</p> <p>The present study conclude that the frequency of <it>TMS1</it>/<it>ASC </it>and <it>CASP8 </it>genes methylation in cervical cancer are rare (< 6%), and have no any critical role in development of cervical cancer.</p

    Geomorphic patterns, internal architecture and reef growth in a macrotidal, high-turbidity setting of coral reefs from the Kimberley bioregion

    The coral reefs of the Kimberley bioregion are situated in an area that is considered a significant ‘biodiversity hotspot’ and are poorly known and of recognised international significance. This paper is a review of ongoing research as part of one of the first geoscientific reef studies of the Kimberley Biozone. Remote sensing, sub-bottom profiling and associated sedimentological work have been employed to produce a regional geodatabase of coral reefs and determine the Holocene internal architecture and growth history of the coral reefs. Satellite image analysis has revealed that fringing reefs in the Kimberley bioregion grow very well and differ geomorphologically from planar reefs both inshore and offshore. The acoustic profiles have depicted multiple reef build-ups, demonstrating the reefs’ long-term resilience. This research has provided a better understanding of the Kimberley reefs and demonstrated their capacity to succeed in challenging environments and generate habitats characterised by high complexity and species diversity

    Salicylic acid improves salinity-alkalinity tolerance in pepper (Capsicum annuum L.)

    Salinization and alkalization of soils are agricultural problems in arid and semiarid regions of the world such as Iran. In this experiment the effects of salicylic acid (SA) on resistance of pepper plants under salt stress (SS) and alkali stress (AS) were evaluated. Treatments include 0 and 150 mM of SS, 0, 50 and 100 mM of AS and 0, 0.75 and 1.5 mM SA. Results showed that SS and AS imposed negative effects on pepper plant growth and productivity. Reduction in growth and yield in SS was higher than AS and maximum reduction occurred in high mixed stresses. SA application improved growth parameters and increased yield, relative water content (RWC) and chlorophyll of plants subjected to SS and AS and provided significant protection against stress compared to non-SA-treated plants.  For most traits, 0.75 mM of SA was more effective than 1.5 mM concentration. SA ameliorated the injury caused by SS and AS by increasing chlorophyll and RWC and inhibiting proline accumulation and leaf electrolyte leakage (EL). In general, results indicate that salinity and alkalinity have negative effects on growth and yield of pepper plants and these negative effects can be ameliorated by application of SA

    Expression of constitutively active erythropoietin receptor in pyramidal neurons of cortex and hippocampus boosts higher cognitive functions in mice

    <p>Abstract</p> <p>Background</p> <p>Erythropoietin (EPO) and its receptor (EPOR) are expressed in the developing brain and their transcription is upregulated in adult neurons and glia upon injury or neurodegeneration. We have shown neuroprotective effects and improved cognition in patients with neuropsychiatric diseases treated with EPO. However, the critical EPO targets in brain are unknown, and separation of direct and indirect effects has remained difficult, given the role of EPO in hematopoiesis and brain oxygen supply.</p> <p>Results</p> <p>Here we demonstrate that mice with transgenic expression of a constitutively active EPOR isoform (cEPOR) in pyramidal neurons of cortex and hippocampus exhibit enhancement of spatial learning, cognitive flexibility, social memory, and attentional capacities, accompanied by increased impulsivity. Superior cognitive performance is associated with augmented long-term potentiation of cEPOR expressing neurons in hippocampal slices.</p> <p>Conclusions</p> <p>Active EPOR stimulates neuronal plasticity independent of any hematopoietic effects and in addition to its neuroprotective actions. This property of EPOR signaling should be exploited for defining novel strategies to therapeutically enhance cognitive performance in disease conditions.</p
