Airports at Risk: The Impact of Information Sources on Security Decisions
Security decisions in high risk organizations such as airports involve obtaining ongoing and frequent information about potential threats. Utilizing questionnaire survey data from a sample of airport
employees in European Airports across the continent, we analyzed
how both formal and informal sources of security information affect employee's decisions to comply with the security rules and
directives. This led us to trace information network flows to assess its impact on the degree employees making security decisions comply or deviate with the prescribed security rules. The results of the multivariate analysis showed that security information obtained through formal and informal networks differentially determine if employee will comply or not with the rules. Information sources emanating from the informal network tends to encourage employees to be more flexible in their security decisions
while formal sources lead to be more rigid with complying with rules and protocols. These results suggest that alongside the formal administrative structure of airports, there exists a diverse and pervasiveness set of informal communications networks that are a potent factor in determining airport security levels
Approaches to Managing and Collecting Born-Digital Literary Materials for Scholarly Use
Digital Humanities Initiative Level 1 Start Up funding is requested to support a series of site visits and planning meetings among personnel working with the born-digital components of three significant collections of literary material: the Salman Rushdie papers at Emory University's Woodruff Library, the Michael Joyce Papers at the Harry Ransom Humanities Research Center at the University of Texas at Austin, and the Deena Larsen Collection at the Maryland Institute for Technology in the Humanities (MITH) at the University of Maryland. The meetings and site visits will facilitate the preparation of a larger collaborative grant proposal among the three institutions aimed at developing archival tools and best practices for preserving and curating the born-digital documents and records of contemporary authorship. Initial findings will be made available through a jointly authored and publicly distributed online white paper, as well as conference presentations at relevant venues
Superfluid Density and Field-Induced Magnetism in Ba(Fe1-xCox)2As2 and Sr(Fe1-xCox)2As2 Measured with Muon Spin Relaxation
We report muon spin rotation (SR) measurements of single crystal
Ba(FeCo)As and Sr(FeCo)As. From
measurements of the magnetic field penetration depth we find that for
optimally- and over-doped samples, varies monotonically
with the superconducting transition temperature T. Within the
superconducting state we observe a positive shift in the muon precession
signal, likely indicating that the applied field induces an internal magnetic
field. The size of the induced field decreases with increasing doping but is
present for all Co concentrations studied.Comment: 7 pages, accepted for publication in Phys. Rev.
Highly Successful Weight Control by Formerly Obese Adolescents: A Qualitative Test of the Healthy Obsession Model
Abstract Background: the Healthy Obsession Model (HOM) suggests that successful weight controllers must develop a preoccupation with the planning and execution of target behaviors to reach and maintain healthy weights (e.g., controlled eating, consistent selfmonitoring). this model further posits that committed weight controllers will feel substantial anxiety or frustration when lapses occur, which, in turn, will motivate them to reinstate target behaviors. Methods: the present study tested the HOM by examining the perceptions and attitudes of four very successful and four relatively unsuccessful adolescent weight controllers 1 year after completing immersion treatment. We expected that successful weight controllers, more so than unsuccessful weight controllers, would report more elaborate definitions of their healthy obsessions and describe more negative reactions to potential and actual lapses. in-depth interviews were conducted using a version of the scanlan Collaborative interview Method. Results and Conclusions: Reliable coding of the interviews produced results that supported the hypothesis that highly successful weight controllers seem to nurture strong healthy obsessions, including clear definitions of healthy obsessions, heightened commitment based on the emotional impact of excess weight, and negative reactions to lapses. in addition, these adolescent weight controllers seemed motivated by some of the same factors that elite athletes identified in the sport Commitment Model (e.g., emotional and experiential Consequences; social support of Parents, Friends, and Peers; institutional influences; and Valuable Opportunities)
Phenol Nitration Induced by an {Fe(NO)\u3csub\u3e2\u3c/sub\u3e}\u3csup\u3e10\u3c/sup\u3e Dinitrosyl Iron Complex
Cellular dinitrosyl iron complexes (DNICs) have long been considered NO carriers. Although other physiological roles of DNICs have been postulated, their chemical functionality outside of NO transfer has not been demonstrated thus far. Here we report the unprecedented dioxygen reactivity of a N-bound {Fe(NO)2}10 DNIC, [Fe(TMEDA)(NO)2] (1). In the presence of O2, 1 becomes a nitrating agent that converts 2,4,-di-tert-butylphenol to 2,4-di-tert-butyl-6-nitrophenol via formation of a putative iron-peroxynitrite [Fe(TMEDA)(NO)(ONOO)] (2) that is stable below −80 °C. Iron K-edge X-ray absorption spectroscopy on 2 supports a five-coordinated metal center with a bound peroxynitrite in a cyclic bidentate fashion. The peroxynitrite ligand of 2 readily decays at increased temperature or under illumination. These results suggest that DNICs could have multiple physiological or deleterious roles, including that of cellular nitrating agents
Platelet and Neutrophil Responses to Gram Positive Pathogens in Patients with Bacteremic Infection
BACKGROUND: Many Gram-positive pathogens aggregate and activate platelets in vitro and this has been proposed to contribute to virulence. Platelets can also form complexes with neutrophils but little is however known about platelet and platelet-neutrophil responses in bacterial infection. METHODOLOGY/PRINCIPAL FINDINGS: We added isolates of Gram-positive bacteria from 38 patients with a bacteremic infection to blood drawn from the same patient. Aggregometry and flow cytometry were used to assess platelet aggregation and to quantify activation of platelets, neutrophils, and platelet-neutrophils complexes (PNCs) induced by the bacteria. Fifteen healthy persons served as controls. Most isolates of Staphylococcus aureus, beta hemolytic streptococci, and Enterococcus faecalis induced aggregation of platelets from their respective hosts, whereas pneumococci failed to do so. S. aureus isolates induced platelet aggregation more rapidly in patients than in controls, whereas platelet activation by S. aureus was lower in patients than in controls. PNCs were more abundant in baseline samples from patients than in healthy controls and most bacterial isolates induced additional PNC formation and neutrophil activation. CONCLUSION/SIGNIFICANCE: We have demonstrated for the first time that bacteria isolated from patients with Gram-positive bacteremia can induce platelet activation and aggregation, PNC formation, and neutrophil activation in the same infected host. This underlines the significance of these interactions during infection, which could be a target for future therapies in sepsis
The materiality of digital media: The hard disk drive, phonograph, magnetic tape and optical media in technical close-up
Popular discourses surrounding contemporary digital media often misrepresent it as immaterial and ephemeral, overlooking the material devices that store and generate our media objects. This article materially ‘descends’ into a selection of prior media forms that make up the genealogy of the hard disk drive (HDD) to challenge our reliance on conceptual misrepresentations. This material analysis is used to situate digital media in a genealogy of prior media forms, to enrich our understanding of how media’s affordances arise from the interplay of both formal and forensic materiality and to demonstrate the value of reintegrating materiality back into the study of media
The materiality of the intangible: Literary metaphor in multimodal texts
Based on a larger practice-based research project in digital writing, this article examines how the materiality of digital media contributes to a layered metaphor that delivers meaning, reflects on the cognitive processes (the writer’s and the reader’s) of navigation and generates a dynamic narrative structure through multimodality, unnatural narration and user interaction. Many writers and artists engage with their chosen medium through an instinctive understanding of the materials at hand, gained through experience; the explicit study of a medium’s materiality is not always required for artistic success, however, that may be judged. This article offers insights into the creative process of creating digital, multimodal fiction, based on a practice-based research project designed to explore the effects of digital media on author and text, and argues that digital media have a significant effect on the outcome of the artefact itself. Awareness of these effects, their variations according to hardware and software, and the affordances of these various materials offer the digital writer greater insight and capability to craft his/her texts for the desired metaphorical meaning
Neuroprotective tissue adaptation induced by IL-12 attenuates CNS inflammation
IL-12 is a well-established driver of type 1 immune responses. Paradoxically, in several autoimmune conditions including neuroinflammation, IL-12 reduces pathology and exhibits regulatory properties. Yet, the mechanism and the involved cellular players behind this immune regulation remain elusive. To identify the IL-12-responsive elements which prevent immunopathology, we generated mouse models lacking a functional IL-12 receptor either in all cells or in specific populations within the immune or central nervous system (CNS) compartments, and induced experimental autoimmune encephalomyelitis (EAE), which models human Multiple Sclerosis (MS). This revealed that the CNS tissue-protective features of IL-12 are mediated by cells of the neuroectoderm, and not immune cells. Importantly, sections of brain from patients with MS show comparable patterns of expression, indicating parallel mechanisms in humans. By combining spectral flow cytometry, bulk and single-nucleus RNA sequencing, we uncovered an IL-12-induced neuroprotective adaption of the neuroectoderm critically involved in maintaining CNS tissue integrity during inflammation
