    Differences in and correlates of sexual function in infertile women with and without polycystic ovary syndrome

    Background: The aim of this study was to examine sexual function and its correlates among infertile women with polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) in comparison with their non-PCOS counterparts. Materials and Methods: In this case-control study, 209 infertile women (116 PCOS and 93 non-PCOS) from Tehran, Iran, were evaluated in February and March 2018. Female sexual function index (FSFI), hormonal status, and documented reports of hyperandrogenic manifestations of the patients were investigated. Results: The mean age of the patients was 32.00 ± 5.00 years old. Eighty-four (40.2) patients including 42.2 of the PCOS patients and 37.6 of the non-PCOS cases (P>0.05), were suspected of female sexual dysfunction (FSD). The most impaired functions in both groups were desire and arousal. Sexual function was not significantly different between the groups. However, PCOS women had more orgasm problems and acne worsened their sexual function. Total FSFI was positively associated with prolactin level but negatively associated with central obesity in the non-PCOS group; it was negatively correlated with marital duration in the PCOS group. Luteinizing hormone (LH) and pain, prolactin level and lubrication, and central obesity and arousal were correlated in the non-PCOS women. Prolactin level and orgasm, marital duration and arousal, and marital duration and the total FSFI were correlated in the PCOS women. Conclusion: Sexual function was similarly low in infertile PCOS and non-PCOS women. However, orgasm problems and the negative effect of acne varied between the two groups. Further investigations may target how hormonal profile may affect sexual function. Practitioners should scrutinize the specific impaired sexual domains and their correlated conditions in PCOS women, notably orgasm, acne, and prolactin level.     Comparison of sterols and fatty acids in two species of Ganoderma

    <p>Abstract</p> <p>Background</p> <p>Two species of <it>Ganoderma, G. sinense </it>and <it>G. lucidum</it>, are used as <it>Lingzhi </it>in China. Howerver, the content of triterpenoids and polysaccharides, main actives compounds, are significant different, though the extracts of both <it>G. lucidum </it>and <it>G. sinense </it>have antitumoral proliferation effect. It is suspected that other compounds contribute to their antitumoral activity. Sterols and fatty acids have obvious bioactivity. Therefore, determination and comparison of sterols and fatty acids is helpful to elucidate the active components of <it>Lingzhi</it>.</p> <p>Results</p> <p>Ergosterol, a specific component of fungal cell membrane, was rich in <it>G. lucidum </it>and <it>G. sinense</it>. But its content in <it>G. lucidum </it>(median content 705.0 μg·g<sup>-1</sup>, range 189.1-1453.3 μg·g<sup>-1</sup>, n = 19) was much higher than that in <it>G. sinense </it>(median content 80.1 μg·g<sup>-1</sup>, range 16.0-409.8 μg·g<sup>-1</sup>, n = 13). Hierarchical clustering analysis based on the content of ergosterol showed that 32 tested samples of <it>Ganoderma </it>were grouped into two main clusters, <it>G. lucidum </it>and <it>G. sinense</it>. Hierarchical clustering analysis based on the contents of ten fatty acids showed that two species of <it>Ganoderma </it>had no significant difference though two groups were also obtained. The similarity of two species of <it>Ganoderma </it>in fatty acids may be related to their antitumoral proliferation effect.</p> <p>Conclusions</p> <p>The content of ergosterol is much higher in <it>G. lucidum </it>than in <it>G. sinense</it>. Palmitic acid, linoleic acid, oleic acid, stearic acid are main fatty acids in <it>Ganoderma </it>and their content had no significant difference between <it>G. lucidum </it>and <it>G. sinense</it>, which may contribute to their antitumoral proliferation effect.</p

Compound 1 possesses a rare NiII3NaI cubane (3M4-1) topology and compound 2 is the first example in polynuclear Ni/Na chemistry that exhibits a 2,3,4M7-1 topology

    Synthesis, characterization and antibacterial activity studies of new 2‑pyrral‑L‑amino acid Schif base palladium (II) complexes.

    Three new 2-pyrral amino acid Schif base palladium (II) complexes were synthesized, characterized and their activity against six bacterial species was investigated. The ligands: Potassium 2-pyrrolidine-L-methioninate (L1), Potassium 2-pyrrolidine-L-histidinate (L2) and Potassium 2-pyrrolidine-L-tryptophanate (L3) were synthesized and reacted with dichloro(1,5- cyclooctadiene)palladium(II) to form new palladium (II) complexes C1, C2 and C3, respectively. 1 NMR, FTIR, UV–Vis,elemental analysis and conductivity measurements were used to characterize the products. The antibacterial activities of the compounds were evaluated against Gram-positive Staphylococcus aureus (S. aureus, ATCC 25923), methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA, ATCC 33591), Staphylococcus epidermidis (S. epidermidis, ATCC 12228) and Streptococcus pyogenes (S. pyogenes, ATCC 19615) and, gram-negative Pseudomonas aeruginosa (P. aeruginosa, ATCC 27853) and Klebsiella pneumoniae (K. pneumoniae, ATCC 13883) using the agar well difusion assay and microtitre plate serial dilution method. The palladium complexes were active against the selected bacteria with the imidazole ring containing complex C2 and indole heterocyclic ring containing complex C3 showing the highest activity

    A decoupled extended power flow analysis based on Newton-Raphson method for islanded microgrids

    •A decoupled extended power flow method is proposed for islanded microgrids.•Partial derivatives of scheduled power injections are included in the Jacobean matrix.•The resistive nature of low-voltage microgrids is used to decouple the algorithm.•The droop control features of distributed generations are formulated in detail.•Different networks are investigated to analyze the performance of the method. Recently, microgrid (MG) power flow (PF) studies have gained a lot of attention due to the emergence of autonomous MGs which feature distributed generations (DGs). There are some inherent limitations in the islanded operation mode of MGs which cannot be addressed by conventional PF methods. In this regard, recent studies have proposed some updates to the conventional approaches by inclusion of network frequency as a variable in their modeling and omission of the slack bus from the grid. These considerations specifically in the Newton-Raphson (NR) method change the Jacobean matrix (JM) formulations. This paper concentrates on improving the previous NR methods for MGs which include droop controlled DGs. For this purpose, the partial derivatives of both calculated and scheduled powers are considered in the Taylor series expansion of bus power injections. Thus, the convergence and accuracy of the PF method are enhanced by adding these derivatives in modeling of generations, loads and losses. Moreover, these extended PF equations are decoupled by reformulating the JM based on the consideration that the lines in MGs are mostly resistive, which results in simplified JM calculations and improved convergence speed. The effectiveness of the proposed decoupled extended NR (DENR) method for MG PF analysis is illustrated in several case studies including 6-bus and 38-bus networks. Moreover, two convergence enhancement methods are also incorporated into the proposed approaches and their merits are investigated
