Mechanisms of burst release from pH-responsive polymeric microparticles.
Microencapsulation of drugs into preformed polymers is commonly achieved through solvent evaporation techniques or spray drying. We compared these encapsulation methods in terms of controlled drug release properties of the prepared microparticles and investigated the underlying mechanisms responsible for the “burst release” effect. Using two different pH-responsive polymers with a dissolution threshold of pH 6 (Eudragit L100 and AQOAT AS-MG), hydrocortisone, a model hydrophobic drug, was incorporated into microparticles below and above its solubility within the polymer matrix. Although, spray drying is an attractive approach due to rapid particle production and relatively low solvent waste, the oil-in-oil microencapsulation method is superior in terms of controlled drug release properties from the microparticles. Slow solvent evaporation during the oil-in-oil emulsification process allows adequate time for drug and polymer redistribution in the microparticles and reduces uncontrolled drug burst release. Electron microscopy showed that this slower manufacturing procedure generated non-porous particles whereas thermal analysis and X-ray diffractometry showed that drug loading above the solubility limit of the drug in the polymer generated excess crystalline drug on the surface of the particles. Raman spectral mapping illustrated that drug was homogeneously distributed as a solid solution in the particles when loaded below saturation in the polymer with consequently minimal burst release
Magnetic Moment Formation in Graphene Detected by Scattering of Pure Spin Currents
Hydrogen adatoms are shown to generate magnetic moments inside single layer
graphene. Spin transport measurements on graphene spin valves exhibit a dip in
the non-local spin signal as a function of applied magnetic field, which is due
to scattering (relaxation) of pure spin currents by exchange coupling to the
magnetic moments. Furthermore, Hanle spin precession measurements indicate the
presence of an exchange field generated by the magnetic moments. The entire
experiment including spin transport is performed in an ultrahigh vacuum
chamber, and the characteristic signatures of magnetic moment formation appear
only after hydrogen adatoms are introduced. Lattice vacancies also demonstrate
similar behavior indicating that the magnetic moment formation originates from

Is it possible to increase the sustainability of arable and ruminant agriculture by reducing inputs?
Until recently, agricultural production was optimised almost exclusively for profit but now farming is under pressure to meet environmental targets. A method is presented and applied for optimising the sustainability of agricultural production systems in terms of both economics and the environment. Components of the agricultural production chain are analysed using environmental life-cycle assessment (LCA) and a financial value attributed to the resources consumed and burden imposed on the environment by agriculture, as well as to the products. The sum of the outputs is weighed against the inputs and the system considered sustainable if the value of the outputs exceeds those of the inputs. If this ratio is plotted against the sum of inputs for all levels of input, a diminishing returns curve should result and the optimum level of sustainability is located at the maximum of the curve. Data were taken from standard economic almanacs and from published LCA reports on the extent of consumption and environmental burdens resulting from farming in the UK. Land-use is valued using the concept of ecosystem services. Our analysis suggests that agricultural systems are sustainable at rates of production close to current levels practiced in the UK. Extensification of farming, which is thought to favour non-food ecosystem services, requires more land to produce the same amount of food. The loss of ecosystem services hitherto provided by natural land brought into production is greater than that which can be provided by land now under extensive farming. This loss of ecosystem service is large in comparison to the benefit of a reduction in emission of nutrients and pesticides. However, food production is essential, so the coupling of subsidies that represent a relatively large component of the economic output in EU farming, with measures to reduce pollution are well-aimed. Measures to ensure that as little extra land is brought into production as possible or that marginal land is allowed to revert to nature would seem to be equally well-aimed, even if this required more intensive use of productive areas. We conclude that current arable farming in the EU is sustainable with either realistic prices for products or some degree of subsidy and that productivity per unit area of land and greenhouse gas emission (subsuming primary energy consumption) are the most important pressures on the sustainability of farming
Coin Tossing is Strictly Weaker Than Bit Commitment
We define cryptographic assumptions applicable to two mistrustful parties who
each control two or more separate secure sites between which special relativity
guarantees a time lapse in communication. We show that, under these
assumptions, unconditionally secure coin tossing can be carried out by
exchanges of classical information. We show also, following Mayers, Lo and
Chau, that unconditionally secure bit commitment cannot be carried out by
finitely many exchanges of classical or quantum information. Finally we show
that, under standard cryptographic assumptions, coin tossing is strictly weaker
than bit commitment. That is, no secure classical or quantum bit commitment
protocol can be built from a finite number of invocations of a secure coin

Rolling Locomotion of Cable-Driven Soft Spherical Tensegrity Robots
Soft spherical tensegrity robots are novel steerable mobile robotic platforms that are compliant, lightweight, and robust. The geometry of these robots is suitable for rolling locomotion, and they achieve this motion by properly deforming their structures using carefully chosen actuation strategies. The objective of this work is to consolidate and add to our research to date on methods for realizing rolling locomotion of spherical tensegrity robots. To predict the deformation of tensegrity structures when their member forces are varied, we introduce a modified version of the dynamic relaxation technique and apply it to our tensegrity robots. In addition, we present two techniques to find desirable deformations and actuation strategies that would result in robust rolling locomotion of the robots. The first one relies on the greedy search that can quickly find solutions, and the second one uses a multigeneration Monte Carlo method that can find suboptimal solutions with a higher quality. The methods are illustrated and validated both in simulation and with our hardware robots, which show that our methods are viable means of realizing robust and steerable rolling locomotion of spherical tensegrity robots
