Variability of the H-beta line profiles as an indicator of orbiting bright spots in accretion disks of quasars: a case study of 3C 390.3

Here we show that in the case when double peaked emission lines originate from outer parts of accretion disk, their variability could be caused by perturbations in the disk emissivity. In order to test this hypothesis, we introduced a model of disk perturbing region in the form of a single bright spot (or flare) by a modification of the power law disk emissivity in appropriate way. The disk emission was then analyzed using numerical simulations based on ray-tracing method in Kerr metric and the corresponding simulated line profiles were obtained. We applied this model to the observed H-beta line profiles of 3C 390.3 (observed in the period 1995-1999), and estimated the parameters of both, accretion disk and perturbing region. Our results show that two large amplitude outbursts of the H-beta line observed in 3C 390.3 could be explained by successive occurrences of two bright spots on approaching side of the disk. These bright spots are either moving, originating in the inner regions of the disk and spiralling outwards by crossing small distances during the period of several years, or stationary. In both cases, their widths increase with time, indicating that they most likely decay.Comment: 14 pages, 5 figures, 1 table. Accepted for publication in Ap

The LysR-type transcriptional regulator CysB controls the repression of hslJ transcription in Escherichia coli

The LysR-type transcriptional regulator (LTTR) CysB is a transcription factor in Escherichia coli cells, where as a homotetramer it binds the target promoter regions and activates the genes involved in sulphur utilization and sulphonate-sulphur metabolism, while negatively autoregulating its own transcription. The hslJ gene was found to be negatively regulated by CysB and directly correlated with novobiocin resistance of the bacterium. cysB mutants showed upregulation of the hslJ:: lacZ gene fusion and exhibited increased novobiocin resistance. In this study the hslJ transcription start point and the corresponding putative sigma(70) promoter were determined. The hslJ promoter region was defined by employing different hslJ-lacZ operon fusions, and transcription of the hslJ gene was shown to be subject to both repression imposed by the CysB regulator and direct or indirect autogenous negative control. These two regulations compete to some extent but they are not mutually exclusive. CysB acts as a direct repressor of hslJ transcription and binds the hslJ promoter region that carries the putative CysB repressor site. This CysB binding, apparently responsible for repression, is enhanced in the presence of the ligand N-acetylserine (NAS), hitherto considered to be a positive cofactor in CysB-mediated gene regulations. Interallelic complementation of characterized CysB mutants I33N and S277Ter partially restored the repression of hslJ transcription and the consequent novobiocin sensitivity, but did not complement the cysteine auxotrophy

Identification of the CysB-regulated gene, hslJ, related to the Escherichia coli novobiocin resistance phenotype

The cysB gene product is a LysR-type regulatory protein required for expression of the cys regulon. cysB mutants of Escherichia coli and Salmonella, along with being auxotrophs for the cysteine, exhibit increased resistance to the antibiotics novobiocin (Nov) and mecillinam. In this work, by using lambdaplacMu9 insertions creating random lacZ fusions, we identify a gene, hslJ, whose expression appeared to be increased in cysB mutants and needed for Nov resistance. Measurements of the hslJ::IacZ gene fusion expression demonstrated that the hslJ gene is negatively regulated by CysB. In addition we observe the negative autogenous control of HslJ. When the control imposed by CysB is lifted in the cysB mutant, the elevation of Nov resistance can be achieved only in the presence of wild-type hslJ allele. A double cysB hslJ mutant restores the sensitivity to Nov. Overexpression of the wild-type HslJ protein either in a cysB(+) or a cys(B-) background increases the level of Nov resistance indicating that hslJ product is indeed involved in accomplishing this phenotype. The hslJ::OmegaKan allele encodes the C-terminaly truncated mutant protein HslJ Q121Ter which is not functional in achieving the Nov resistance but when overexpressed induces the psp operon. Finally, we found that inactivation of hslJ does not affect the increased resistance to mecillinam in cysB mutants

Histiocytosis x: Recurrent isolated mandibular lesion (case report)

Histiocytosis X usually affects children and adolescents. In our case, a 54-year-old woman was admitted to hospital for evaluating and treatment of an isolated, painless swelling of the left side of the mandible. Orthopanthomogram showed a cystic formation located on the left side of the mandibular body. Radiographs of the scull and body showed no pathologic changes. Laboratory findings did not reveal any abnormality. Surgical enucleation of the mandibular cystic lesion was performed and histopathological analysis confirmed the presence of histiocytosis X. One year after the first operation a relapse formation was found and surgically removed. Resection of the left side of the mandibular body was performed immediately followed by reconstruction of the mandibular defect with free osseos graft taken from the iliac crest. All follow-ups in the period of three years after the second operation showed no sign of relapse

Remote Sensing and Forest Conservation: Challenges of Illegal Logging in Kursumlija Municipality (Serbia)

Evidence convincingly shows that illegal and corrupt activities are the major underlying cause of deforestation—illegal logging contributes up to 30% of the global market, in excess of US $20 billion a year. Since so much deforestation is a result of illegal logging, we cannot rely on official production statistics to capture deforestation. Given the importance and complexity of forest preservation, an attempt was made to evaluate the possible use of a normalized difference vegetation index (NDVI) in local forest management and prevention of illegal logging and corruption. We used the example of southern Serbian municipality Kursumlija that in the 2006–2011 periods experienced a 10% loss in forest area, as the obvious result of abrupt illegal logging. This process was very easy to locate and quantify (because illegal logging produced large canopy gaps that extend from the border of Kosovo to approximately 3–4 km into the Kursumlija\u27s territory). In short, NDVI is very promising for countries like Serbia (that rarely perform forest inventories): It is relatively cheap and quick, and it can provide forest managers with essential information; it is easy to implement; the objectivity of these methods can significantly help in avoiding corruption and illegal logging

Discrete-time exponentially stabilizing fuzzy sliding mode control via lyapunov's method

The exponentially stabilizing state feedback control algorithm is developed by Lyapunov's second method leading to the variable structure system with chattering free sliding modes. Linear time-invariant discrete-time second order plant is considered and the control law is obtained by using a simple fuzzy controller. The analytical structure of the proposed controller is derived and used to prove exponential stability of sliding subspace. Essentially, the control algorithm drives the system from an arbitrary initial state to a prescribed so-called sliding subspace S, in finite time and with prescribed velocity estimate. Inside the sliding subspace S, the system is switched to the sliding mode regime and stays in it forever. The proposed algorithm is tested on the real system in practice, DC servo motor, and simulation and experimental results are given
