Signals of R-parity violating supersymmetry in neutrino scattering at muon storage rings

    Get PDF
Neutrino oscillation signals at muon storage rings can be faked by supersymmetric (SUSY) interactions in an R-parity violating scenario. We investigate the Ď„\tau-appearance signals for both long-baseline and near-site experiments, and conclude that the latter is of great use in distinguishing between oscillation and SUSY effects. On the other hand, SUSY can cause a manifold increase in the event rate for wrong-sign muons at a long-baseline setting, thereby providing us with signatures of new physics.Comment: 7 pages LaTeX, 4 ps figures, accepted for publication in Phys. Nondestructive Evaluation of Surface Properties of Sintered Si3N4 Ceramics with Surface Wave Dispersion

    Get PDF
Elastic properties of high-performance ceramics is usually measured with ultrasonic bulk waves [1]. However, the bulk waves gives us only properties averaged over sample thickness. Sintered ceramics often have properties at the surface different from in the middle. Thus we need a method which distinguishes near surface property from the averaged one. Surface wave technique has been applied for nondestructive characterization of ceramics [2–4]. The depth-dependent properties of ceramics, however, has never been reported. Surface wave propagates in subsurface layer of about one wavelength. Therefore we’ll be able to estimate the depth-dependent properties of the ceramics, if we’ll use surface waves of different frequency or wavelength

Space demostration of bare electrodynamic tape-tether technology on the sounding rocket S520-25

    Get PDF
A spaceflight validation of bare electro dynamic tape tether technology was conducted. A S520-25 sounding rocket was launched successfully at 05:00am on 31 August 2010 and successfully deployed 132.6m of tape tether over 120 seconds in a ballistic flight. The electrodynamic performance of the bare tape tether employed as an atmospheric probe was measured. Flight results are introduced through the present progressive report of the demonstration and the results of flight experiment are examined as the premier report of the international cooperation between Japan, Europe, USA and Australia. Future plans for maturing space tether technology, which will play an important role for future space activities, are also discussed

Does gaze perception facilitate overt orienting?

Recent studies have demonstrated the facilitation of responses to peripheral targets cued by the direction of the gaze of a face. However, in the absence of data from an eye tracker, it has been unclear to what extent these effects are due to the participants making small saccades in response to the cue that bring them closer to the congruent location of the cued targets. We used an eye tracker to show that while such cue-driven saccades occur, they do not account for the main cueing effects observed. Additionally, by using the same general paradigm as has previously been used with infants, we demonstrate that different mechanisms underlie eye gaze cueing effects in infants and adults
