    Carrier dynamics in ion-implanted GaAs studied by simulation and observation of terahertz emission

    We have studied terahertz (THz) emission from arsenic-ion implanted GaAs both experimentally and using a three-dimensional carrier dynamics simulation. A uniform density of vacancies was formed over the optical absorption depth of bulk GaAs samples by performing multi-energy implantations of arsenic ions (1 and 2.4MeV) and subsequent thermal annealing. In a series of THz emission experiments the frequency of peak THz power was found to increase significantly from 1.4 to 2.2THz when the ion implantation dose was increased from 10^13 to 10^16 cm-3. We used a semi-classical Monte-Carlo simulation of ultra-fast carrier dynamics to reproduce and explain these results. The effect of the ion-induced damage was included in the simulation by considering carrier scattering at neutral and charged impurities, as well as carrier trapping at defect sites. Higher vacancy concentrations and shorter carrier trapping times both contributed to shorter simulated THz pulses, the latter being more important over experimentally realistic parameter ranges.Comment: 6 pages, 7 figure

    Controlled Secret Sharing Protocol using a Quantum Cloning Circuit

    We demonstrate the possibility of controlling the success probability of a secret sharing protocol using a quantum cloning circuit. The cloning circuit is used to clone the qubits containing the encoded information and {\em en route} to the intended receipients. The success probability of the protocol depends on the cloning parameters used to clone the qubits. We also establish a relation between the concurrence of initially prepared state, entanglement of the mixed state received by the receivers after cloning scheme and the cloning parameters of cloning machine.Comment: This is a modified version of the previous work quant-ph/arXiv:1011.286

    Experiencing the ‘Other’: An Ethical and Ontological Inquiry into the Characterization of Yeong-hye in Han Kang’s The Vegetarian

    Any discussion on the concept of ‘difference’ entails within itself the understanding of the subject’s existence in the world through his experience of the ‘other’. What branches out as a result of this encounter is a myriad of possible experiences through which one tries to apprehend the world in which they live. Han Kang’s The Vegetarian, published in Korea in 2007, is in her own words, an attempt to contemplate the ‘spectrum’ that is humanity. To do so, the author delves into a deeper inquiry into the ontology of human existence as validated by the perspective of the other. The three-part novel, narrating the perspectives of three different people in their attempts to understand its principal character, Yeong-hye, provides a broader methodological framework for the author’s exegesis. This paper seeks to engage closely with these narratives to probe a further inquiry into the ethics of subjective expression and its consequent effect on the ‘other’. 

    Polarisation-sensitive terahertz detection by multicontact photoconductive receivers

    We have developed a terahertz radiation detector that measures both the amplitude and polarization of the electric field as a function of time. The device is a three-contact photoconductive receiver designed so that two orthogonal electric-field components of an arbitrary polarized electromagnetic wave may be detected simultaneously. The detector was fabricated on Fe+ ion-implanted InP. Polarization-sensitive detection is demonstrated with an extinction ratio better than 100:1. This type of device will have immediate application in studies of birefringent and optically active materials in the far-infrared region of the spectrum.Comment: 3 pages, 3 figure

    Engineering the side facets of vertical [100] oriented InP nanowires for novel radial heterostructures

    In addition to being grown on industry-standard orientation, vertical [100] oriented nanowires present novel families of facets and related cross-sectional shapes. These nanowires are engineered to achieve a number of facet combinations and cross-sectional shapes, by varying their growth parameters within ranges that facilitate vertical growth. In situ post-growth annealing technique is used to realise other combinations that are unattainable solely using growth parameters. Two examples of possible novel radial heterostructures grown on these vertical [100] oriented nanowire facets are presented, demonstrating their potential in future applications

    Hidden Order in Crackling Noise during Peeling of an Adhesive Tape

    We address the long standing problem of recovering dynamical information from noisy acoustic emission signals arising from peeling of an adhesive tape subject to constant traction velocity. Using phase space reconstruction procedure we demonstrate the deterministic chaotic dynamics by establishing the existence of correlation dimension as also a positive Lyapunov exponent in a mid range of traction velocities. The results are explained on the basis of the model that also emphasizes the deterministic origin of acoustic emission by clarifying its connection to sticks-slip dynamics.Comment: 5 pages, 10 figure

    Study of intermixing in a GaAs/AlGaAs quantum-well structure using doped spin-on silica layers

    The effect of two different dopants, P and Ga, in spin-on glass (SOG) films on impurity-free vacancy disordering (IFVD) in GaAs/AlGaAs quantum-well structures has been investigated. It is observed that by varying the annealing and baking temperatures, P-doped SOG films created a similar amount of intermixing as the undoped SOG films. This is different from the results of other studies of P-doped SiO₂ and is ascribed to the low doping concentration of P, indicating that the doping concentration of P in the SiO₂ layer is one of the key parameters that may control intermixing. On the other hand, for all the samples encapsulated with Ga-doped SOG layers, significant suppression of the intermixing was observed, making them very promising candidates with which to achieve the selective-area defect engineering that is required for any successful application of IFVD.One of the authors (H.H.T.) acknowledges a fellowship awarded to him by the Australian Research Council
