Opening Mirror Symmetry on the Quintic
Aided by mirror symmetry, we determine the number of holomorphic disks ending
on the real Lagrangian in the quintic threefold. The tension of the domainwall
between the two vacua on the brane, which is the generating function for the
open Gromov-Witten invariants, satisfies a certain extension of the
Picard-Fuchs differential equation governing periods of the mirror quintic. We
verify consistency of the monodromies under analytic continuation of the
superpotential over the entire moduli space. We reproduce the first few
instanton numbers by a localization computation directly in the A-model, and
check Ooguri-Vafa integrality. This is the first exact result on open string
mirror symmetry for a compact Calabi-Yau manifold.Comment: 26 pages. v2: minor corrections and improvement
Moduli Webs and Superpotentials for Five-Branes
We investigate the one-parameter Calabi-Yau models and identify families of
D5-branes which are associated to lines embedded in these manifolds. The moduli
spaces are given by sets of Riemann curves, which form a web whose intersection
points are described by permutation branes. We arrive at a geometric
interpretation for bulk-boundary correlators as holomorphic differentials on
the moduli space and use this to compute effective open-closed superpotentials
to all orders in the open string couplings. The fixed points of D5-brane moduli
under bulk deformations are determined.Comment: 41 pages, 1 figur
Optical evidence for symmetry changes above the Neel temperature in KCuF3
We report on optical measurements of the 1D Heisenberg antiferromagnet KCuF3.
The crystal-field excitations of the Cu2+ ions have been observed and their
temperature dependence can be understood in terms of magnetic and
exchange-induced dipole mechanisms and vibronic interactions. Above T_N we
observe a new temperature scale T_S characterized by the emergence of narrow
absorption features that correlate with changes of the orbital ordering as
observed by Paolasini et al. [Phys. Rev. Lett. 88, 106403 (2002)]. The
appearance of these optical transitions provides evidence for a symmetry change
above the Neel temperature that affects the orbital ordering and paves the way
for the antiferromagnetic ordering.Comment: 4 pages, 2 figure
Permutation branes and linear matrix factorisations
All the known rational boundary states for Gepner models can be regarded as
permutation branes. On general grounds, one expects that topological branes in
Gepner models can be encoded as matrix factorisations of the corresponding
Landau-Ginzburg potentials. In this paper we identify the matrix factorisations
associated to arbitrary B-type permutation branes.Comment: 43 pages. v2: References adde
D-brane superpotentials and RG flows on the quintic
The behaviour of D2-branes on the quintic under complex structure
deformations is analysed by combining Landau-Ginzburg techniques with methods
from conformal field theory. It is shown that the boundary renormalisation
group flow induced by the bulk deformations is realised as a gradient flow of
the effective space time superpotential which is calculated explicitly to all
orders in the boundary coupling constant.Comment: 24 pages, 1 figure, v2:Typo in (3.14) correcte
Calculations for Mirror Symmetry with D-branes
We study normal functions capturing D-brane superpotentials on several one-
and two-parameter Calabi-Yau hypersurfaces and complete intersections in
weighted projective space. We calculate in the B-model and interpret the
results using mirror symmetry in the large volume regime, albeit without
identifying the precise A-model geometry in all cases. We identify new classes
of extensions of Picard-Fuchs equations, as well as a novel type of topology
changing phase transition involving quantum D-branes. A 4-d domain wall which
is obtained in one region of closed string moduli space from wrapping a
four-chain interpolating between two Lagrangian submanifolds is, for other
values of the parameters, represented by a disk ending on a single Lagrangian.Comment: 42 page

Integer Vector Addition Systems with States
This paper studies reachability, coverability and inclusion problems for
Integer Vector Addition Systems with States (ZVASS) and extensions and
restrictions thereof. A ZVASS comprises a finite-state controller with a finite
number of counters ranging over the integers. Although it is folklore that
reachability in ZVASS is NP-complete, it turns out that despite their
naturalness, from a complexity point of view this class has received little
attention in the literature. We fill this gap by providing an in-depth analysis
of the computational complexity of the aforementioned decision problems. Most
interestingly, it turns out that while the addition of reset operations to
ordinary VASS leads to undecidability and Ackermann-hardness of reachability
and coverability, respectively, they can be added to ZVASS while retaining
NP-completness of both coverability and reachability.Comment: 17 pages, 2 figure
A proteomics-based assessment of inflammation signatures in endotoxemia
We have previously shown that multimers of plasma pentraxin-3 (PTX3) were predictive of survival in patients with sepsis. To characterize the release kinetics and cellular source of plasma protein changes in sepsis, serial samples were obtained from healthy volunteers (n = 10; three time points) injected with low-dose endotoxin (lipopolysaccharide [LPS]) and analyzed using data-independent acquisition MS. The human plasma proteome response was compared with an LPS-induced endotoxemia model in mice. Proteomic analysis of human plasma revealed a rapid neutrophil degranulation signature, followed by a rise in acute phase proteins. Changes in circulating PTX3 correlated with increases in neutrophil-derived proteins following LPS injection. Time course analysis of the plasma proteome in mice showed a time-dependent increase in multimeric PTX3, alongside increases in neutrophil-derived myeloperoxidase (MPO) upon LPS treatment. The mechanisms of oxidation-induced multimerization of PTX3 were explored in two genetic mouse models: MPO global knock-out (KO) mice and LysM Cre Nox2 KO mice, in which NADPH oxidase 2 (Nox2) is only deficient in myeloid cells. Nox2 is the enzyme responsible for the oxidative burst in neutrophils. Increases in plasma multimeric PTX3 were not significantly different between wildtype and MPO or LysM Cre Nox2 KO mice. Thus, PTX3 may already be stored and released in a multimeric form. Through in vivo neutrophil depletion and multiplexed vascular proteomics, PTX3 multimer deposition within the aorta was confirmed to be neutrophil dependent. Proteomic analysis of aortas from LPS-injected mice returned PTX3 as the most upregulated protein, where multimeric PTX3 was deposited as early as 2 h post-LPS along with other neutrophil-derived proteins. In conclusion, the rise in multimeric PTX3 upon LPS injection correlates with neutrophil-related protein changes in plasma and aortas. MPO and myeloid Nox2 are not required for the multimerization of PTX3; instead, neutrophil extravasation is responsible for the LPS-induced deposition of multimeric PTX3 in the aorta
A quantum McKay correspondence for fractional 2p-branes on LG orbifolds
We study fractional 2p-branes and their intersection numbers in non-compact
orbifolds as well the continuation of these objects in Kahler moduli space to
coherent sheaves in the corresponding smooth non-compact Calabi-Yau manifolds.
We show that the restriction of these objects to compact Calabi-Yau
hypersurfaces gives the new fractional branes in LG orbifolds constructed by
Ashok et. al. in hep-th/0401135. We thus demonstrate the equivalence of the
B-type branes corresponding to linear boundary conditions in LG orbifolds,
originally constructed in hep-th/9907131, to a subset of those constructed in
LG orbifolds using boundary fermions and matrix factorization of the
world-sheet superpotential. The relationship between the coherent sheaves
corresponding to the fractional two-branes leads to a generalization of the
McKay correspondence that we call the quantum McKay correspondence due to a
close parallel with the construction of branes on non-supersymmetric orbifolds.
We also provide evidence that the boundary states associated to these branes in
a conformal field theory description corresponds to a sub-class of the boundary
states associated to the permutation branes in the Gepner model associated with
the LG orbifold.Comment: LaTeX2e, 1+39 pages, 3 figures (v2) refs added, typos and report no.
