Structure and Evolution of the World Trade Network
The \emph{World Trade Web} (WTW), the network defined by the international
import/export trade relationships, has been recently shown to display some
important topological properties which are tightly related to the Gross
Domestic Product of world countries. While our previous analysis focused on the
static, undirected version of the WTW, here we address its full evolving,
directed description. This is accomplished by exploiting the peculiar
reciprocity structure of the WTW to recover the directed nature of
international trade channels, and by studying the temporal dependence of the

Interplay between topology and dynamics in the World Trade Web
We present an empirical analysis of the network formed by the trade
relationships between all world countries, or World Trade Web (WTW). Each
(directed) link is weighted by the amount of wealth flowing between two
countries, and each country is characterized by the value of its Gross Domestic
Product (GDP). By analysing a set of year-by-year data covering the time
interval 1950-2000, we show that the dynamics of all GDP values and the
evolution of the WTW (trade flow and topology) are tightly coupled. The
probability that two countries are connected depends on their GDP values,
supporting recent theoretical models relating network topology to the presence
of a `hidden' variable (or fitness). On the other hand, the topology is shown
to determine the GDP values due to the exchange between countries. This leads
us to a new framework where the fitness value is a dynamical variable
determining, and at the same time depending on, network topology in a

Fitness-dependent topological properties of the World Trade Web
Among the proposed network models, the hidden variable (or good get richer)
one is particularly interesting, even if an explicit empirical test of its
hypotheses has not yet been performed on a real network. Here we provide the
first empirical test of this mechanism on the world trade web, the network
defined by the trade relationships between world countries. We find that the
power-law distributed gross domestic product can be successfully identified
with the hidden variable (or fitness) determining the topology of the world
trade web: all previously studied properties up to third-order correlation
structure (degree distribution, degree correlations and hierarchy) are found to
be in excellent agreement with the predictions of the model. The choice of the
connection probability is such that all realizations of the network with the

Sorrentina peninsula: Geographical distribution of the indoor radon concentrations in dwellings—gini index application
The radon isotope (222Rn, half-life 3.8 days) is a radioactive byproduct of the238U decay chain. Because radon is the second biggest cause of lung cancer after smoking, dense maps of indoor radon concentration are required to implement effective locally based risk reduction strategies. In this regard, we present an innovative method for the construction of interpolated maps (kriging) based on the Gini index computation to characterize the distribution of Rn concentration. The Gini coefficient variogram has been shown to be an effective predictor of radon concentration inhomogeneity. It allows for a better constraint of the critical distance below which the radon geological source can be considered uniform, at least for the investigated length scales of variability; it also better distinguishes fluctuations due to environmental predisposing factors from those due to random spatially uncorrelated noise. This method has been shown to be effective in finding larger-scale geographical connections that can subsequently be connected to geological characteristics. It was tested using real dataset derived from indoor radon measurements conducted in the Sorrentina Peninsula in Campania, Italy. The measurement was carried out in different residences using passive detectors (CR-39) for two consecutive semesters, beginning in September– November 2019 and ending in September–November 2020, to estimate the yearly mean radon concentration. The measurements and analysis were conducted in accordance with the quality control plan. Radon concentrations ranged from 25 to 722 Bq/m3 before being normalized to ground level, and from 23 to 933 Bq/m3 after being normalized, with a geometric mean of 120 Bq/m3 and a geometric standard deviation of 1.35 before data normalization, and 139 Bq/m3 and a geometric standard deviation of 1.36 after data normalization. Approximately 13% of the tests conducted exceeded the 300 Bq/m3 reference level set by Italian Legislative Decree 101/2020. The data show that the municipalities under investigation had no influence on indoor radon levels. The geology of the monitored location is interesting, and because soil is the primary source of Rn, risk assessment and mitigation for radon exposure cannot be undertaken without first analyzing the local geology. The entropy of randomized network ensembles
Randomized network ensembles are the null models of real networks and are
extensivelly used to compare a real system to a null hypothesis. In this paper
we study network ensembles with the same degree distribution, the same
degree-correlations or the same community structure of any given real network.
We characterize these randomized network ensembles by their entropy, i.e. the
normalized logarithm of the total number of networks which are part of these
ensembles.
We estimate the entropy of randomized ensembles starting from a large set of
real directed and undirected networks. We propose entropy as an indicator to
assess the role of each structural feature in a given real network.We observe
that the ensembles with fixed scale-free degree distribution have smaller
entropy than the ensembles with homogeneous degree distribution indicating a
higher level of order in scale-free networks.Comment: (6 pages,1 figure,2 tables
Patterns of link reciprocity in directed networks
We address the problem of link reciprocity, the non-random presence of two
mutual links between pairs of vertices. We propose a new measure of reciprocity
that allows the ordering of networks according to their actual degree of
correlation between mutual links. We find that real networks are always either
correlated or anticorrelated, and that networks of the same type (economic,
social, cellular, financial, ecological, etc.) display similar values of the
reciprocity. The observed patterns are not reproduced by current models. This
leads us to introduce a more general framework where mutual links occur with a
conditional connection probability. In some of the studied networks we discuss
the form of the conditional connection probability and the size dependence of

Episodic angioedema with hypereosinophilia (Gleich’s syndrome): A case report and extensive review of the literature
Episodic angioedema with eosinophilia (EAE) (Gleich’s syndrome) is a rare disease charac-terized by hypereosinophilia (up to 95 × 109 cells/L), recurrent episodes of angioedema, urticaria, weight gain, and fever, that occur at periodical intervals (usually every 3–4 weeks). The exact etiology of EAE is still unclear, but both eosinophils and abnormalities of cytokines homeostasis seem to play a pivotal role in the pathogenesis of the disease. In particular, the cyclic elevation of serum interleukin-5 before the increase in eosinophil count has been reported. Herein, we performed a broad literature review and report the case of a thirty-two-year-old woman with a two-year history of cyclic angioedema attacks, urticaria, periodic weight gain, and severe hypereosinophilia, diagnosed with EAE and treated with oral corticosteroids. Describing the most relevant clinical features of EAE reported so far in the literature, we aim to provide physicians with some useful tools to help them deal with this disease. In addition, we aim to raise awareness about this rare condition in which approved diagnostic classification criteria are currently missing
Nailfold videocapillaroscopy findings in bradykinin-mediated angioedema
Background: Hereditary angioedema with C1-inhibitor deficiency (C1-INH-HAE) and acquired angioedema related to angiotensin-converting enzyme (ACE) inhibitors (ACEI-AAE) are types of bradykinin-mediated angioedema without wheals characterized by recurrent swelling episodes. Recent evidence suggests that a state of “vascular preconditioning” predisposes individuals to attacks, although no data are available on possible structural alterations of the vessels. Objective: This study aims to compare the features of nailfold capillaries to highlight possible structural anomalies between patients affected by C1-INH-HAE and controls and between patients with ACEI-AAE and hypertensive controls. Methods: We used nailfold videocapillaroscopy (NVC) to assess the following: apical, internal, and external diameter; loop length; intercapillary distance; and capillary density, distribution, and morphology. Plasma levels of vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) A, VEGF-C, angiopoietin (Ang) 1, and Ang2 were also measured. Results: Compared with healthy controls (n=28), C1-INH-HAE patients (n = 34) were characterized by significant structural alterations of the capillaries, such as greater intercapillary distance (216 vs 190 µm), increased apical, internal, and external diameter (28 vs 22 µm; 22 vs 20 µm; and 81 vs 65 µm, respectively), decreased density (4 vs 5 capillaries/mm2), more irregular capillary distribution, and more tortuous morphology. Apical diameter was enlarged in patients with ≥12 attacks per year. In ACEI-AAE patients, NVC showed no alterations with respect to hypertensive controls. NVC performed in 2 C1-INH-HAE patients during attacks showed no changes compared with the remission phase. Conclusions: We detected major structural capillary alterations in C1-INH-HAE patients, thus confirming the involvement of microcirculation in the pathogenesis of angioedema
Focus on cardiologic findings in 30 children with PANS/PANDAS. an italian single-center observational study
Objective: Cardiac involvement in PANS has not been clarified relying on the scientific literature available until today. It is known that streptococcal infections play a role in the etiology of a great number of diseases including Sydenham chorea and rheumatic fever, among others. Based on the suspected pathogenesis of PANDAS (Pediatric Autoimmune Neuropsychiatric Disorders Associated with Streptococcal infections) reported in the medical literature, we decided to investigate the cardiologic involvement in children with a recent PANS/PANDAS diagnosis. Methods: The study population satisfies PANS (1) and PANDAS (2) criteria of diagnoses. Cardiologic assessment was performed through clinical examination, electrocardiography, and echocardiography. Results: In the selected pediatric population, a significant number of children presented mitral valve involvement, systolic murmurs and electrocardiographic abnormalities. High ASLOT levels did not seem to be associated to a cardiac involvement. Conclusions: Often PANS is difficult to diagnose because it is little known by physicians and most of the cardiologic findings described in this study are common among the healthy pediatric population. Also, ASLOT levels seems not to be predictive of cardiac involvement. Furthermore, the existence of PANDAS as a clinical entity is associated with a group of anti-neuronal autoantibodies found in Sydenham chorea is still controversial. We recommend a complete cardiologic evaluation in those children who meet the PANS/PANDAS diagnostic criteria
Naturally-occurring alkaloids of plant origin as potential antimicrobials against antibiotic-resistant infections
Antibiotic resistance is now considered a worldwide problem that puts public health at risk. The onset of bacterial strains resistant to conventional antibiotics and the scarcity of new drugs have prompted scientific research to re-evaluate natural products as molecules with high biological and chemical potential. A class of natural compounds of significant importance is represented by alkaloids derived from higher plants. In this review, we have collected data obtained from various research groups on the antimicrobial activities of these alkaloids against conventional antibiotic-resistant strains. In addition, the structure-function relationship was described and commented on, highlighting the high potential of alkaloids as antimicrobials
