    Tetragonal zirconia: Wet chemical preparation, mechanical and electrical properties

    Yttria-stabilized zirconia powders were prepared in the composition range of 3 to 13 at% yttria. The hydrolysis-gel precipitation technique was used, starting from metal alkoxides or chlorides. In the composition range between 5 and 10 at% yttria, the materials sintered at 1250°C have a fully tetragonal structure. The density was higher than 95% and the grain sizes can be varied between 0.1 and 0.5μm depending on the preparation conditions. The fracture toughness KIC amounts 6 to 11 MPam but is not dependent on the composition. The transformation toughening mechanism and the properties of the tetragonal phase itself play an important role in the increase of KIC compared with cubic materials. The magnitude of the oxygen-ion conductivity value is comparable with that for cubic materials

    Oxygen surface exchange and diffusion in fast ionic conductors

    The rate of oxygen surface exchange on selected bulk oxides exhibiting enhanced oxygen ion conductivity has been derived by measuring 18O penetration profiles using a high sensitivity dynamic SIMS technique. These values for the oxygen surface exchange coefficient (K) were used to derive the steady-state oxygen fluxes through the oxide surface for conditions when the bulk oxide was in equilibrium with 1 atm. of oxygen at 500 and 700°C. The oxygen fluxes were transformed into current fluxes and compared with available exchange current densities (iO) measured using electrochemical techniques. The two sets of current densities exhibited large differences for zirconia based electrolytes which confirmed the important role of platinum as an electro-catalyst. However for bismuth based electrolytes good agreement was noted between the two sets of iO values. It was concluded therefore that the dissociative adsorption of oxygen occurred predominately on the surface of the Bi2O3 based electrolyte and that the presence of a metal electrode (Pt or Au) had little effect upon the overall exchange current kinetics

    Excess mortality in general hospital patients with delirium: A 5-year follow-up of 519 patients seen in psychiatric consultation

    Mortality was determined in 519 patients with delirium who were seen in psychiatric consultation in two general hospitals. Among 419 patients with simple delirium (DSM-III: 293.00) in-hospital mortality was 26%. As compared to average hospital patients the age adjusted in-hospital excess mortality ratio varied from 6.2 for patients with malignancies to 2.1 for patients with motor system disease. After hospital discharge the 5-yr cumulative mortality was 51%. As compared to the general population excess mortality was noted in most, but not in all diagnostic subgroups. The age and sex adjusted excess mortality ratio varied from 14.1 for malignancies to 1.3 for motor system disease. The figures underline a general notion that delirium may be an indicator of disorders of grave prognosis, but mortality appears to depend more on the medical condition than on the presence of delirium

    Towards optimising distributed data streaming graphs using parallel streams

    Modern scientific collaborations have opened up the op-portunity of solving complex problems that involve multi-disciplinary expertise and large-scale computational experi-ments. These experiments usually involve large amounts of data that are located in distributed data repositories running various software systems, and managed by different organi-sations. A common strategy to make the experiments more manageable is executing the processing steps as a work-flow. In this paper, we look into the implementation of fine-grained data-flow between computational elements in a scientific workflow as streams. We model the distributed computation as a directed acyclic graph where the nodes rep-resent the processing elements that incrementally implement specific subtasks. The processing elements are connected in a pipelined streaming manner, which allows task executions to overlap. We further optimise the execution by splitting pipelines across processes and by introducing extra parallel streams. We identify performance metrics and design a mea-surement tool to evaluate each enactment. We conducted ex-periments to evaluate our optimisation strategies with a real world problem in the Life Sciences—EURExpress-II. The paper presents our distributed data-handling model, the op-timisation and instrumentation strategies and the evaluation experiments. We demonstrate linear speed up and argue that this use of data-streaming to enable both overlapped pipeline and parallelised enactment is a generally applicable optimisation strategy

    A Natural Experiment on the Condition-Dependence of Achromatic Plumage Reflectance in Black-Capped Chickadees

    Honest advertisement models posit that only individuals in good health can produce and/or maintain ornamental traits. Even though disease has profound effects on condition, few studies have experimentally tested its effects on trait expression and even fewer have identified a mechanistic basis for these effects. Recent evidence suggests that black and white, but not grey, plumage colors of black-capped chickadees (Poecile atricapillus) are sexually selected. We therefore hypothesized that birds afflicted with avian keratin disorder, a condition that affects the beak and other keratinized tissues, would show reduced expression of black and white, but not grey, color. UV-vis spectrometry of black-capped chickadees affected and unaffected by avian keratin disorder revealed spectral differences between them consistent with this hypothesis. To elucidate the mechanistic bases of these differences, we used scanning electron microscopy (SEM), electron-dispersive x-ray spectroscopy (EDX) and a feather cleaning experiment. SEM showed extreme feather soiling in affected birds, and EDX revealed that this was most likely from external sources. Experimentally cleaning the feathers increased color expression of ornamental feathers of affected, but not unaffected, birds. These data provide strong evidence that black and white color is an honest indicator in chickadees, and that variation in feather dirtiness, likely due to differences in preening behavior is a mechanism for this association

    A Validation Study of the Web Screening Questionnaire (WSQ) Compared With the Mini-International Neuropsychiatric Interview-Plus (MINI-Plus)

    Background: There is a need for brief screening methods for psychiatric disorders in clinical practice. This study assesses the validity and accuracy of a brief self-report screening questionnaire, the Web Screening Questionnaire (WSQ), in detecting psychiatric disorders in a study group comprising the general population and psychiatric outpatients aged 18 years and older. Objective: The aim of this study was to investigate whether the WSQ is an adequate test to screen for the presence of depressive and anxiety disorders in clinical practice. Methods: Participants were 1292 adults (1117 subjects from the general population and 175 psychiatric outpatients), aged 18 to 65 years. The discriminant characteristics of the WSQ were examined in relation to the (“gold standard”) Mini-International Neuropsychiatric Interview-Plus (MINI-Plus) disorders, by means of sensitivity, specificity, area under the curve (AUC), and positive and negative predictive values (PPVs, NPVs). Results: The specificity of the WSQ to individually detect depressive disorders, anxiety disorders, and alcohol abuse or dependence ranged from 0.89 to 0.97 for most disorders, with the exception of post-traumatic stress disorder (0.52) and specific phobia (0.73). The sensitivity values ranged from 0.67 to 1.00, with the exception of depressive disorder (0.56) and alcohol abuse or dependence (0.56). Given the low prevalence of separate disorders in the general population sample, NPVs were extremely high across disorders (≥0.97), whereas PPVs were of poor strength (range 0.02-0.33). Conclusions: In this study group, the WSQ was a relatively good screening tool to identify individuals without a depressive or anxiety disorder, as it accurately identified those unlikely to suffer from these disorders (except for post-traumatic stress disorders and specific phobias). However, in case of a positive WSQ screening result, further diagnostic procedures are required
