What are the essential characteristics that constitute historic American neighbor- hoods? Do current regulations promote developments that exhibit these essential characteristics? In this thesis I analyze two historic neighborhoods in an effort to un- cover their architectonic principles. By identifying the key components that comprise these places, we can critically analyze whether regulations, such as Historic Preserva- tion Ordinances and the SmartCode, are adequately designed to govern development practices of residential neighborhoods.M.S.Committee Chair: Dagenhart, Richar

Designing a Mobile Linguist Guide Application to Facilitate the Communication Between Malaysian and Arabs

    Get PDF
Mobile device can be used anywhere and anytime. Relying on this characteristic, the research aims to introduce electronic linguist guide can be applied on the mobile devices in order to obtain the communication between the countries which are talking different languages. Facilitating or enhancing the communication leads to convergence of cultures. As long as the research deals with Malaysians and those people who talk Arabic language, that will be useful for both sides where the Malaysians will be more familiar with the Arabic language which is the Holy Quran language and Arabs can spread the Islamic language actively. Learning common phrases will urge users to have more about a specific language. Hope of the benefits of this study serves more than two kinds of people if we have knew it can expand for including many languages

Teachers\u27 Perceptions toward Implementing English as a Foreign Language at Kindergarten: What Can We Learn from the Case of Kuwaiti Kindergarten Teachers?

The teaching of English as a foreign language has a promising outlook in the nation of Kuwait. Recent policy reflects language development theories that see early childhood as an especially good period for the learning of a foreign language. Thus, English is now taught at 30 public kindergartens in Kuwait. However, the program apparently was implemented quickly, with little consideration for how teachers and other stakeholders would respond to it. This paper explores that program in the context of the perceptions and views of teachers affected by it. A review of the existing curriculum points towards deficiencies, and investigation of the perceptions of teachers clarifies them. For this study, surveys were distributed to kindergarten teachers tasked with teaching English in 30 kindergartens in five different school districts, in Kuwait. 631 surveys were completed, providing information about teachers\u27 perceptions and views towards: 1) learning English at an early age, 2) the current English curriculum, 3) teacher needs for effective instruction, and 4) the challenges teachers face. Total agreement was tabulated for each survey statement. Results were also subjected to one-way analysis of variance tests to identify differences according to school district, training institution, and length of teaching experience. The results show that teachers generally agree with the idea of introducing children to English at an early age. Their agreement with the actual curriculum used for that purpose is considerably weaker. At the same time, the results indicate that teachers generally recognize that they have needs for teaching English which are not currently being met, and that they face considerable challenges in that role. District, source of training, and years of experience are connected to variation on only a few statements, but these variations help to explain the source of certain teacher perceptions and what can be done by policymakers to improve teacher engagement with kindergarten English education. Improvements to pre-service and in-service training are recommended as the most essential changes that the Kuwaiti Ministry of Education must make in order to continue implementing the current curriculum

This is done to determine the components of the covariant derivative of the Riemannian curvature tensor. Moreover, the conditions which make Kenmotsu type manifolds to be locally symmetric or generalized Φ- recurrent have been established. It is also concluded that the locally symmetric of Kenmotsu type manifolds are generalized recurrent under suitable condition and vice versa. Furthermore, the study establishes the relationship between the Einstein manifolds and locally symmetric of Kenmotsu type manifolds

Aqueous to organic phase transfer of Au25 clusters

    Get PDF
Aqueous to organic phase transfer of water soluble sub-nanocluster, Au25SG18 (-SG, glutathione thiolate) is demonstrated using the phase transfer reagent, tetraoctylammonium bromide. The phase transfer occurred by the electrostatic attraction between the hydrophilic carboxylate anion of the glutathione ligand on the cluster surface in the aqueous phase and the hydrophobic tetraoctylammonium cation in the toluene phase. Detailed spectroscopic characterization of the phase transferred cluster using optical absorption, photoluminescence and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy showed that the cluster retains its integrity during the phase transfer. The interaction of the cluster with the phase transfer reagent can be studied with infrared spectroscopy. The phase transferred cluster can be dried and redissolved in an organic medium, just as the original cluster. This is the first report of the phase transfer of a sub-nanocluster, keeping the cluster core intact. The effect of dilution and pH on phase transfer of this cluster is studied in detail. This method promises several possibilities to explore the properties, reactivity and applications of sub-nanoclusters both in the aqueous and organic phases

Avascular necrosis of the femoral head masquerading as back pain

    Get PDF
Avascular necrosis causes severe joint destruction requiring a major surgical procedure for treatment. It is more prevalent in the elderly population and is initially asymptomatic. Here, we report the case of an 85-year-old woman who was scheduled for surgical intervention for severe back pain. On further evaluation, she was diagnosed with avascular necrosis of hip with pain radiating to her back. Nonclassical clinical presentation, nonambulatory status of the patient, and multiple pain locations masking the primary site such as in this case are some of the factors that make avascular necrosis a formidable diagnostic challenge

Reciprocal relationships between efficacy and performance in athlete dyads: Self-, other-, and collective constructs

    Get PDF
This study’s purpose was to evaluate the unique contributions of self-, other-, and collective constructs in the efficacy-performance reciprocal relationship for athlete dyads involving low- and high-dependence roles. Data were obtained from 74 intact cheerleading pairs on self-, other-, and collective efficacy and subjective performance evaluations for each of five successive trials. Objective assessments of dyad performances were obtained from digital recordings. Across path-models involving a single efficacy construct, similar reciprocal relationships between objective dyad performance and self-, other-, or collective efficacy were observed. In path-models comprised of multiple efficacy or performance constructs, unique efficacy contributions were observed in the prediction of objective dyad performance, and unique subjective performance contributions were observed in the prediction of efficacy beliefs. Partner effects were observed more often for athletes in the high-dependence role than for those in the low-dependence role. Findings support how self-, other-, and collective beliefs are processed by team athletes

Introduction: A Field experiment was conducted at the experimental farm, Dept. of Field Crop (Al-Jadriya), Coll. of Agric., Univ. of Baghdad to study the effects of brassinolide concentrations and spraying stages on yield and its components of maize (Baghdad 3 cultivar) during spring and autumn seasons in 2017. Materials and Methods: A randomized complete blocks design arranged in actorial experiment was used with three replicates. The first factor included three concentrations (0, 2 and 4 mg L-1) of brassinolide, and the second factor included spraying stages (4, 8, 12, 4 + 8, 4 + 12, and 8 + 12 leaves) using the same concentrations for each stage. Results and discussion: Results showed that the concentration 4 mg L-1 gave the highest grain yield (6.59 and 7.15 t ha-1) for its superiority in 500 grain weight (102.74 and 112.26 g) and number of ears per plant (1.43 and 1.44 ear) for both spring and autumn seasons, respectively. The spraying stage (4 + 8 leaves) recorded highest grain yield (6.33 and 6.77 t ha-1), and 500 grain weight (104.73 and 119.20 g) for both spring and autumn seasons, respectively. The effect of interaction for both factors was significant in most studied traits. Conclusion: Therefore, we recommend spraying Brassinolide in a concentration of 4 mg L-1 at the stage 4 + 8 leaves to increase grain yield of maiz
