    Civic Engagement and Democracy in Post-Suharto Indonesia: a Review of Musrenbang, the Kecamatan Development Programme, and Labour Organising

    Drawing attention to the wider literature on the linkages between civic engagement and democracy, this paper starts off by asking the question whether civic engagement beyond formal politics actually serves to strengthen democracy in Indonesia. Noting a contradiction between the literature that proposes that high associational density fosters democracy and recent analysis that highlights that political opportunity structures in Indonesia are unfavourable to popular representation and participation, the paper draws attention to a largely underexplored field within Indonesian democracy studies, namely that of mobilisation and participation by marginalised groups. The paper discusses and analyses strategies for bottom-up mobilisation, specifically the development planning programmes of Musrenbang, the Kecamatan Development Program (KDP), and Indonesian labour organising. The analysis focuses on the democratising aspects of these sectors, arguing that participation and mobilisation lacks the necessary popular foundations as well as organisational capacities that are necessary for participatory institutions to effectively enhance democracy. The paper thereby hints that associational density in and of itself is a poor indicator for democracy, especially in relation to democratic consolidation in new democracies

    Effect of live-storage period and temperature on oxygen consumption rate in the cold-water sea cucumber Parastichopus tremulus

    Sea cucumbers are of great significance in marine ecosystems all over the world. The red sea cucumber Parastichopus tremulus is also considered commercially interesting but very little information is available on its ecology and physiology. This study aimed at investigating this North Atlantic species` oxygen demand in relation to live-storage period and temperature in an attempt to deliver some physiological puzzle pieces useful in a potential aquacultural context. Oxygen consumption rate (OCR) was measured in P. tremulus stored in a flow-through system for up to one year, and in recirculation systems at different temperatures (4, 8 and 12°C) for up to four weeks. Throughout the experimental period, biometric data were collected from the different treatment groups and a condition index (CI) calculated. The results showed that long-term storage affected OCR and CI, which increased and decreased with time, respectively. Storage at 4°C resulted in significantly lower OCR and higher CI compared to 8 and 12°C after four weeks, suggesting that 4°C may be best for maintaining body mass during short-term storage, whereas storage at 8 and 12°C may require supplementary feeding to avoid biomass loss. Data presented in this study may be useful for a range of applications, for example in a prospective aquaculture setting, for optimizing live seafood storage, but also for impact assessment and management of wild stocks

    Genome-wide analyses for personality traits identify six genomic loci and show correlations with psychiatric disorders

    Personality is influenced by genetic and environmental factors1 and associated with mental health. However, the underlying genetic determinants are largely unknown. We identified six genetic loci, including five novel loci2,3, significantly associated with personality traits in a meta-analysis of genome-wide association studies (N = 123,132–260,861). Of these genomewide significant loci, extraversion was associated with variants in WSCD2 and near PCDH15, and neuroticism with variants on chromosome 8p23.1 and in L3MBTL2. We performed a principal component analysis to extract major dimensions underlying genetic variations among five personality traits and six psychiatric disorders (N = 5,422–18,759). The first genetic dimension separated personality traits and psychiatric disorders, except that neuroticism and openness to experience were clustered with the disorders. High genetic correlations were found between extraversion and attention-deficit– hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) and between openness and schizophrenia and bipolar disorder. The second genetic dimension was closely aligned with extraversion–introversion and grouped neuroticism with internalizing psychopathology (e.g., depression or anxiety)

    A sequence variant associating with educational attainment also affects childhood cognition

    Only a few common variants in the sequence of the genome have been shown to impact cognitive traits. Here we demonstrate that polygenic scores of educational attainment predict specific aspects of childhood cognition, as measured with IQ. Recently, three sequence variants were shown to associate with educational attainment, a confluence phenotype of genetic and environmental factors contributing to academic success. We show that one of these variants associating with educational attainment, rs4851266-T, also associates with Verbal IQ in dyslexic children (P=4.3 x 10(-4), beta=0.16 s.d.). The effect of 0.16 s.d. corresponds to 1.4 IQ points for heterozygotes and 2.8 IQ points for homozygotes. We verified this association in independent samples consisting of adults (P=8.3 x 10(-5), beta=0.12 s.d., combined P=2.2 x 10(-7), beta=0.14 s.d.). Childhood cognition is unlikely to be affected by education attained later in life, and the variant explains a greater fraction of the variance in verbal IQ than in educational attainment (0.7% vs 0.12%,. P=1.0 x 10(-5))
