    Preliminary study of oxide-dispersion-strengthened B-1900 prepared by mechanical alloys

    An experimental oxide dispersion strengthened (ODS) alloy based on the B-1900 composition was produced by the mechanical alloying process. Without optimization of the processing for the alloy or the alloy for the processing, recrystallization of the extruded product to large elongated grains was achieved. Materials having grain length-width ratios of 3 and 5.5 were tested in tension and stress-rupture. The ODS B-1900 exhibited tensile strength similar to that of cast B-1900. Its stress-rupture life was lower than that of cast B-1900 at 760 C. At 1095 C the ODS B-1900 with the higher grain length-width ratio (5.5) had stress-rupture life superior to that of cast B-1900. It was concluded that, with optimization, oxide dispersion strengthening of B-1900 and other complex cast nickel-base alloys has potential for improving high temperature properties over those of the cast alloy counterparts

A top coating of an oxidation, hot corrosion, erosion resistant alloy of nickel, cobalt, or iron is then deposited on the base coating. A heat treatment is used to improve the bonding. The base coating serves as an inhibitor to interdiffusion between the protective top coating and the substrate. Otherwise, the protective top coating would rapidly interact detrimentally with the substrate and degrade by spalling of the protective oxides formed on the outer surface at elevated temperatures

    Environmental Relationships And Predator-Prey Interactions Within The Snapper-Grouper Complex In The Southeastern U.S. Atlantic – Implications For Fisheries Management

    Stock assessments indicate many valuable fish species are declining, or are considered overfished and/or are undergoing overfishing. Fisheries scientists and managers in the southeastern U.S. typically have utilized a single-species approach, and relied on catch per unit effort data derived from fishery-independent surveys to determine indices of abundance for economically important reef fish. However, catchability for these surveys vary for many reasons including environmental and predator-prey relationships. This research was developed to elucidate environmental influences on reef fish assemblages and distribution of reef-associated marine predators, and examine predator-prey dynamics that may influence relative abundance of large predators based on chevron traps and video data from the southeastern U.S. Atlantic. The first part of this study focused on fish assemblage structure association with different environmental gradients such as distance to shelf edge, depth, substrate vertical relief, substrate size, biotic class and % biotic cover. The second part of the study further detailed the association of Scamp, Gag, Yellowmouth Grouper, Red Grouper, Snowy Grouper and Red Snapper with month, latitude, depth, temperature, surface geologic class, biotic class, and percent biotic cover and revealed Red Snapper had a wider niche breadth than the groupers, while alternatively, groupers exhibited greater habitat specificity. The final part of the study determined Gag, Red Grouper and Red Snapper showed a preference toward Tomtate and small Black Sea Bass when predation occurred within traps. However, statistical analyses determined selected prey species were not important drivers in the presence of the focal predator species within the traps or video observations. Based on observations during this study, predator-prey interactions may have more implications for indices based on video outside the traps for these focal predator species. Given environmental relationships and species interactions have implications for fisheries management, this study provides details that describe assemblage patterns across environmental gradients, determines habitat associations for economically and environmentally important groupers and Red Snapper, and determines the importance of predation regarding chevron traps. This information will be used to inform stock assessments and conservation management decisions to enhance fisheries sustainability

    Academic performance & student engagement in level 1 physics undergraduates

    At the beginning of academic year 2007-08, staff in the Department of Physics & Astronomy at the University of Glasgow started to implement a number of substantial changes to the administration of the level 1 physics undergraduate class. The main aims were to improve the academic performance and progression statistics. With this in mind, a comprehensive system of learning support was introduced, the main remit being the provision of an improved personal contact and academic monitoring and support strategy for all students at level 1. The effects of low engagement with compulsory continuous assessment components had already been observed to have a significant effect for students sitting in the middle of the grade curve. Analysis of data from the 2007-08 class showed that even some nominally high-achieving students achieved lowered grades due to the effects of low engagement. Nonetheless, academic and other support measures put in place during 2007-08 played a part in raising the passrate for the level 1 physics class by approximately 8% as well as raising the progression rate by approximately 10%.Comment: 12 pages, 3 figure
