Excitonic Photoluminescence in Semiconductor Quantum Wells: Plasma versus Excitons
Time-resolved photoluminescence spectra after nonresonant excitation show a
distinct 1s resonance, independent of the existence of bound excitons. A
microscopic analysis identifies excitonic and electron-hole plasma
contributions. For low temperatures and low densities the excitonic emission is
extremely sensitive to even minute optically active exciton populations making
it possible to extract a phase diagram for incoherent excitonic populations.Comment: 9 pages, 4 figure
Many-Body Dynamics and Exciton Formation Studied by Time-Resolved Photoluminescence
The dynamics of exciton and electron-hole plasma populations is studied via
time-resolved photoluminescence after nonresonant excitation. By comparing the
peak emission at the exciton resonance with the emission of the continuum, it
is possible to experimentally identify regimes where the emission originates
predominantly from exciton and/or plasma populations. The results are supported
by a microscopic theory which allows one to extract the fraction of bright
excitons as a function of time.Comment: 11 pages, 5 figure
MobiQ: A modular Android application for collecting social interaction, repeated survey, GPS and photographic data
The MobiQ app for Android smartphones is a feature-rich application enabling a novel approach to data collection for longitudinal surveys. It combines continuous automatic background data collection with user supplied data. It can prompt users to complete questionnaires at regular intervals, and allows users to upload photographs for social research projects. The app has the capability to collect GPS location data, and calls and text frequency (excluding content) unobtrusively. The app transmits data to a secure cloud rather than storing research data on the phone, but can also store data temporarily if a data connection is unavailable; hence, MobiQ offers data security advantages over text- or web-based surveys using phones. MobiQ has been pilot tested in the field in a social science research project and is able to collect longitudinal social research data. Due to its modular and flexible design, MobiQ can easily be adapted to suit different research questions. Furthermore, its core design approach which allows for long-term power efficient data collection can be re-used outside the social sciences domain for other kinds of smartphone-based data-driven projects. Projects that have a requirement for communications-based, sensors-based, user-based data collection or any combination of these may find our code and design approach beneficial. For example, MobiQ code and architecture has been successfully adapted to build an app for a project investigating smartphone-based implicit authentication for mobile access control
Angle-resonant stimulated polariton amplifier
We experimentally demonstrate resonant coupling between photons and excitons in microcavities which can efficiently generate enormous single-pass optical gains approaching 100. This new parametric phenomenon appears as a sharp angular resonance of the incoming pump beam, at which the moving excitonic polaritons undergo very large changes in momentum. Ultrafast stimulated scattering is clearly identified from the exponential dependence on pump intensity. This device utilizes boson amplification
induced by stimulated energy relaxation
Influence of Coulomb and Phonon Interaction on the Exciton Formation Dynamics in Semiconductor Heterostructures
A microscopic theory is developed to analyze the dynamics of exciton
formation out of incoherent carriers in semiconductor heterostructures. The
carrier Coulomb and phonon interaction is included consistently. A cluster
expansion method is used to systematically truncate the hierarchy problem. By
including all correlations up to the four-point (i.e. two-particle) level, the
fundamental fermionic substructure of excitons is fully included. The analysis
shows that the exciton formation is an intricate process where Coulomb
correlations rapidly build up on a picosecond time scale while phonon dynamics
leads to true exciton formation on a slow nanosecond time scale.Comment: 18 pages, 7 figure
Effects of inhomogeneous broadening on reflection spectra of Bragg multiple quantum well structures with a defect
The reflection spectrum of a multiple quantum well structure with an inserted
defect well is considered. The defect is characterized by the exciton frequency
different from that of the host's wells. It is shown that for relatively short
structures, the defect produces significant modifications of the reflection
spectrum, which can be useful for optoelectronic applications. Inhomogeneous
broadening is shown to affect the spectrum in a non-trivial way, which cannot
be described by the standard linear dispersion theory. A method of measuring
parameters of both homogeneous and inhomogeneous broadenings of the defect well
from a single CW reflection spectrum is suggested.Comment: 27 pages, 6 eps figures; RevTe
New decoding algorithms for Hidden Markov Models using distance measures on labellings
<p>Abstract</p> <p>Background</p> <p>Existing hidden Markov model decoding algorithms do not focus on approximately identifying the sequence feature boundaries.</p> <p>Results</p> <p>We give a set of algorithms to compute the conditional probability of all labellings "near" a reference labelling <it>λ </it>for a sequence <it>y </it>for a variety of definitions of "near". Properties of a general quaternion-valued gradient operator and its applications to signal processing
The gradients of a quaternion-valued function are often required for quaternionic signal processing algorithms. The HR gradient operator provides a viable framework and has found a number of applications. However, the applications so far have been limited to mainly real-valued quaternion functions and linear quaternionvalued functions. To generalize the operator to nonlinear quaternion functions, we define a restricted version of the HR operator, which comes in two versions, the left and the right ones. We then present a detailed analysis of the properties of the operators, including several different product rules and chain rules. Using the new rules, we derive explicit expressions for the derivatives of a class of regular nonlinear quaternion-valued functions, and prove that the restricted HR gradients are consistent with the gradients in the real domain. As an application, the derivation of the least mean square algorithm and a nonlinear adaptive algorithm is provided. Simulation results based on vector sensor arrays are presented as an example to demonstrate the effectiveness of the quaternion-valued signal model and the derived signal processing algorithm
Quantum Maxwell-Bloch equations for spatially inhomogeneous semiconductor lasers
We present quantum Maxwell-Bloch equations (QMBE) for spatially inhomogeneous
semiconductor laser devices. The QMBE are derived from fully quantum mechanical
operator dynamics describing the interaction of the light field with the
quantum states of the electrons and the holes near the band gap. By taking into
account field-field correlations and field-dipole correlations, the QMBE
include quantum noise effects which cause spontaneous emission and amplified
spontaneous emission. In particular, the source of spontaneous emission is
obtained by factorizing the dipole-dipole correlations into a product of
electron and hole densities. The QMBE are formulated for general devices, for
edge emitting lasers and for vertical cavity surface emitting lasers, providing
a starting point for the detailed analysis of spatial coherence in the near
field and far field patterns of such laser diodes. Analytical expressions are
given for the spectra of gain and spontaneous emission described by the QMBE.
These results are applied to the case of a broad area laser, for which the
frequency and carrier density dependent spontaneous emission factor beta and
the evolution of the far field pattern near threshold are derived.Comment: 22 pages RevTex and 7 figures, submitted to Phys.Rev.A, revisions in

A new method for detection of exciton Bose condensation using stimulated two-photon emission
Stimulated two-photon emission by Bose-condensed excitons accompanied by a
coherent two-exciton recombination, i.e., by simultaneous recombination of two
excitons with opposite momenta leaving unchanged the occupation numbers of
excitonic states with nonzero momenta, is investigated. Raman light scattering
accompanied by a similar two-exciton recombination (or generation of two
excitons) is also analyzed. The processes under consideration can occur only if
a system contains Bose condensate, therefore, their detection can be used as a
new method to reveal Bose condensation of excitons. The recoil momentum, which
corresponds to a change in the momentum of the electromagnetic field in the
processes, is transferred to phonons or impurities. If the recoil momentum is
transmitted to optical phonons with frequency , the stimulated
two-photon emission with the coherent two-exciton recombination leads to the
appearance of a line at , where
and is the light frequency corresponding to the recombination of an
exciton with zero momentum. Formulas for the cross sections at finite
temperatures are obtained for the processes under consideration. Our estimates
indicate that a spectral line, corresponding to the stimulated two-photon
emission accompanied by the coherent optical phonon-assisted two-exciton
recombination can be experimentally detected in CuO.Comment: 28 pages, 3 Postscript figure
