End the Stigma: Strategies to Improve Mental Health
The project discusses coping strategies that students can utilize to improve their mental health. A paper, along with five fliers that will be distributed to incoming freshmen were developed. Each flier discusses a different coping strategy on the following topics: physical activity, mindfulness, social media use, routines, and resources available to students in the community
Fluxon analogues and dark solitons in linearly coupled Bose-Einstein condensates
Two effectively one-dimensional parallel coupled Bose-Einstein condensates in
the presence of external potentials are studied. The system is modelled by
linearly coupled Gross-Pitaevskii equations. In particular, grey-soliton-like
solutions representing analogues of superconducting Josephson fluxons as well
as coupled dark solitons are discussed. Theoretical approximations based on
variational formulations are derived. It is found that the presence of a
magnetic trap can destabilize the fluxon analogues. However, stabilization is
possible by controlling the effective linear coupling between the condensates.Comment: 14 pages, 7 figures, The paper is to appear in Journal of Physics
Stabilizing the Discrete Vortex of Topological Charge S=2
We study the instability of the discrete vortex with topological charge S=2
in a prototypical lattice model and observe its mediation through the central
lattice site. Motivated by this finding, we analyze the model with the central
site being inert. We identify analytically and observe numerically the
existence of a range of linearly stable discrete vortices with S=2 in the
latter model. The range of stability is comparable to that of the recently
observed experimentally S=1 discrete vortex, suggesting the potential for
observation of such higher charge discrete vortices.Comment: 4 pages, 4 figure
Ag-coverage-dependent symmetry of the electronic states of the Pt(111)-Ag-Bi interface: The ARPES view of a structural transition
We studied by angle-resolved photoelectron spectroscopy the strain-related
structural transition from a pseudomorphic monolayer (ML) to a striped
incommensurate phase in an Ag thin film grown on Pt(111). We exploited the
surfactant properties of Bi to grow ordered Pt(111)-xMLAg-Bi trilayers with 0 <
x < 5 ML, and monitored the dispersion of the Bi-derived interface states to
probe the structure of the underlying Ag film. We find that their symmetry
changes from threefold to sixfold and back to threefold in the Ag coverage
range studied. Together with previous scanning tunneling microscopy and
photoelectron diffraction data, these results provide a consistent microscopic
description of the coverage-dependent structural transition.Comment: 10 pages, 9 figure
Non-Equilibrium Dynamics and Superfluid Ring Excitations in Binary Bose-Einstein Condensates
We revisit a classic study [D. S. Hall {\it et al.}, Phys. Rev. Lett. {\bf
81}, 1539 (1998)] of interpenetrating Bose-Einstein condensates in the
hyperfine states and of Rb and observe striking new non-equilibrium
component separation dynamics in the form of oscillating ring-like structures.
The process of component separation is not significantly damped, a finding that
also contrasts sharply with earlier experimental work, allowing a clean first
look at a collective excitation of a binary superfluid. We further demonstrate
extraordinary quantitative agreement between theoretical and experimental
results using a multi-component mean-field model with key additional features:
the inclusion of atomic losses and the careful characterization of trap
potentials (at the level of a fraction of a percent).Comment: 4 pages, 3 figures (low res.), to appear in PR
Oscillations of dark solitons in trapped Bose-Einstein condensates
We consider a one-dimensional defocusing Gross--Pitaevskii equation with a
parabolic potential. Dark solitons oscillate near the center of the potential
trap and their amplitude decays due to radiative losses (sound emission). We
develop a systematic asymptotic multi-scale expansion method in the limit when
the potential trap is flat. The first-order approximation predicts a uniform
frequency of oscillations for the dark soliton of arbitrary amplitude. The
second-order approximation predicts the nonlinear growth rate of the
oscillation amplitude, which results in decay of the dark soliton. The results
are compared with the previous publications and numerical computations.Comment: 13 pages, 3 figure
Beating dark-dark solitons in Bose-Einstein condensates
Motivated by recent experimental results, we study beating dark-dark solitons
as a prototypical coherent structure that emerges in two-component
Bose-Einstein condensates. We showcase their connection to dark- bright
solitons via SO(2) rotation, and infer from it both their intrinsic beating
frequency and their frequency of oscillation inside a parabolic trap. We
identify them as exact periodic orbits in the Manakov limit of equal inter- and
intra-species nonlinearity strengths with and without the trap and showcase the
persistence of such states upon weak deviations from this limit. We also
consider large deviations from the Manakov limit illustrating that this
breathing state may be broken apart into dark-antidark soliton states. Finally,
we consider the dynamics and interactions of two beating dark-dark solitons in
the absence and in the presence of the trap, inferring their typically
repulsive interaction.Comment: 13 pages, 14 figure
Symmetry Breaking in Symmetric and Asymmetric Double-Well Potentials
Motivated by recent experimental studies of matter-waves and optical beams in
double well potentials, we study the solutions of the nonlinear Schr\"{o}dinger
equation in such a context. Using a Galerkin-type approach, we obtain a
detailed handle on the nonlinear solution branches of the problem, starting
from the corresponding linear ones and predict the relevant bifurcations of
solutions for both attractive and repulsive nonlinearities. The results
illustrate the nontrivial differences that arise between the steady
states/bifurcations emerging in symmetric and asymmetric double wells
