    Picosecond laser-pump, x-ray probe spectroscopy of GaAs

    A laser-pump, x-ray probe spectroscopic experiment is described, and the results are shown. The Ga KαKα x-ray fluorescence following x-ray absorption, at the Ga K absorption edge was measured, and its increase due to excitation with subpicosecond pulses of laser light at 4.6 eV photon energy was determined. The x-ray absorption, and thus the fluorescence, is increased for about 200 ps after the laser pulse because additional final states for the x-ray absorption are cleared in the valence band by the laser excitation. The technique could eventually lead to a femtosecond pump-probe spectroscopy with an absolute reference energy level and also to a femtosecond x-ray detector.     Collider discovery limits for supersymmetric Higgs bosons

    The prospects for discovery of the five Higgs bosons of the minimal supersymmetric standard model are assessed for existing and planned future colliders, including LEP\,I, LEP\,II, LHC and SSC. As a benchmark for comparisons, we take a top-quark mass mt=150 m_t= 150\,GeV and squark mass parameter m~=1 \tilde m= 1\,TeV in evaluating one-loop radiative corrections; some results for other mtm_t values are also given. Searches based on the most promising production and decay channels are taken into account. For large regions in parameter space, detectable signals are predicted for one or more of the Higgs bosons, but there remains a region for which no signals would be visible at the above colliders.Comment: 24 pages, 23 postscript figures available on request.     Simulations of Time-Resolved X-Ray Diffraction in Laue Geometry

    A method of computer simulation of Time-Resolved X-ray Diffraction (TRXD) in asymmetric Laue (transmission) geometry with an arbitrary propagating strain perpendicular to the crystal surface is presented. We present two case studies for possible strain generation by short-pulse laser irradiation: (i) a thermoelastic-like analytic model; (ii) a numerical model including effects of electron-hole diffusion, Auger recombination, deformation potential and thermal diffusion.     Like Sign Dilepton Signature for R-Parity Violating SUSY Search at the Tevatron Collider

    The like sign dileptons provide the most promising signature for superparticle search in a large category of RR-parity violating SUSY models. We estimate the like sign dilepton signals at the Tevatron collider, predicted by these models, over a wide region of the MSSM parameter space. One expects an unambiguous signal upto a gluino mass of 200−300200 - 300 GeV (≥500\geq 500 GeV) with the present (proposed) accumulated luminosity of ∼0.1 (1) fb−1\sim 0.1~(1)~{\rm fb}^{-1}.Comment: 12 page LaTeX file; 5 figures available upon request from the autho

    Method for Flavor Tagging in Neutral B Meson Decays

    A method is proposed for tagging the flavor of neutral BB mesons in the study of CP-violating decay asymmetries. The method makes use of a possible difference in interactions in BπB \pi or B∗πB^* \pi systems with isospins 1/2 and 3/2, and would be particularly clean if the I=1/2I = 1/2 systems can be detected as ``B∗∗B^{**}'' resonances.Comment: Submitted to Phys.     Picosecond time-resolved x-ray diffraction probe of coherent lattice dynamics (abstract) (invited)

    The short pulses of hard x rays from synchrotron and laser based sources are sensitive probes of lattice dynamics on an ultrafast time scale. Using pump–probe time-resolved x-ray diffraction, we are able to follow the propagation of a picosecond coherent acoustic pulse in an ultrafast laser-strained single crystal. Comparison of the data with dynamical diffraction simulations allows for the quantitative determination of both the surface and bulk components of the associated strain. This technique is scalable to femtosecond and shorter time scales as x-ray pulses become shorter in duration, such as in fourth generation light sources.     Lepton flavor conserving Z -> l^+ l^-$ decays in the general two Higgs doublet model

    We calculate the new physics effects to the branching ratios of the lepton flavor conserving decays Z -> l^+ l^- in the framework of the general two Higgs Doublet model. We predict the upper limits for the couplings |\bar{\xi}^{D}_{N,\mu\tau}| and |\bar{\xi}^{D}_{N,\tau\tau}| as 3\times 10^2 GeV and 1\times 10^2 GeV, respectively.Comment: 9 pages, 3 figure

    Tevatron Mass Limits for Heavy Quarks Decaying via Flavor Changing Neutral Current

    The dimuon and dielectron data from the Tevatron pˉp\bar pp collider are used to probe for heavy quarks, which decay dominantly via flavour changing neutral current. Depending on whether the FCNCFCNC decay occurs at the tree or loop level, one gets a lower mass limit of 85 or 75 GeV.     Supersonic strain front driven by a dense electron-hole plasma

    We study coherent strain in (001) Ge generated by an ultrafast laser-initiated high density electron-hole plasma. The resultant coherent pulse is probed by time-resolved x-ray diffraction through changes in the anomalous transmission. The acoustic pulse front is driven by ambipolar diffusion of the electron-hole plasma and propagates into the crystal at supersonic speeds. Simulations of the strain including electron-phonon coupling, modified by carrier diffusion and Auger recombination, are in good agreement with the observed dynamics.Comment: 4 pages, 6 figure

    Infinite Momentum Frame Calculation of Semileptonic Heavy \Lambda_b\to\Lambda_c Transitions Including HQET Improvements

    We calculate the transition form factors that occur in heavy Λ\Lambda-type baryon semileptonic decays as e.g. in Λb→Λc++l−+νˉl\Lambda_{b} \to \Lambda_{c}^{+} + l^{-} + \bar{\nu}_{l} . We use Bauer-Stech-Wirbel type infinite momentum frame wave functions for the heavy Λ\Lambda-type baryons which we assume to consist of a heavy quark and a light spin-isospin zero diquark system. The form factors at q2=0 q^{2} = 0 are calculated from the overlap integrals of the initial and final Λ\Lambda-type baryon states. To leading order in the heavy mass scale the structure of the form factors agrees with the HQET predictions including the normalization at zero recoil. The leading order ω\omega-dependence of the form factors is extracted by scaling arguments. By comparing the model form factors with the HQET predictions at O(1/mQ){\cal O}(1/m_{Q}) we obtain a consistent set of model form factors up to O(1/mQ){\cal O}(1/m_{Q}). With our preferred choice of parameter values we find that the contribution of the non-leading form factor is practically negligible. We use our form factor predictions to compute rates, spectra and various asymmetry parameters for the semi-leptonic decay Λb→Λc++l−+νˉl\Lambda_{b} \to \Lambda_{c}^{+} + l^{-} + \bar{\nu}_{l} .Comment: 24 pages, LaTeX, 6 figures are included in PostScript format.
