    On-site early-warning system for bishkek (Kyrgyzstan)

    <p>In this work, the development of an on-site early warning system for Bishkek (Kyrgyzstan) is outlined. Several low cost sensors equipped with MEMS accelerometers are installed in eight buildings distributed within the urban area. The different sensing units communicate each other via wireless links and the seismic data are streamed in real-time to the data center using internet. Since each single sensing unit has computing capabilities, software for data processing can be installed to perform decentralized actions. In particular, each sensing unit can perform event detection task and run software for on-site early warning. If a description for the vulnerability of the building is uploaded in the sensing unit, this piece of information can be exploited to introduce the expected probability of damage in the early-warning protocol customized for a specific structure.</p

    Quasicrystals and their approximants in 2D ternary oxides

    2D oxide quasicrystals (OQCs) are recently discovered aperiodic, but well-ordered oxide interfaces. In this topical review, an introduction to these new thin-film systems is given. The concept of quasicrystals and their approximants is explained for BaTiO3 - and SrTiO3 - derived OQCs and related periodic structures in these 2D oxides. In situ microscopy unravels the high-temperature formation process of OQCs on Pt(111). The dodecagonal structure is discussed regarding tiling statistics and tiling decoration based on the results of atomically resolved scanning tunneling microscopy and various diffraction techniques. In addition, angle-resolved ultraviolet photoemission spectroscopy and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy results prove a metallic character of the 2D oxide

    YesIn this article we examine the industrial relations practices of three large European food retailers when they transfer the hypermarket format to other countries. We ask, first, how industrial relations in hypermarkets differ from those in other food retailing outlets. Second, we examine how far the approach characteristic of each company’s country-of-origin (Germany, France and the UK) shapes the practices adopted elsewhere. Third, we ask how they respond to the specific industrial relations systems of each host country (Turkey, Poland, Ireland and Spain)

    Spin texture of time reversal symmetry invariant surface states on W 110

    We find in the case of W 110 previously overlooked anomalous surface states having their spin locked at right angle to their momentum using spin resolved momentum microscopy. In addition to the well known Dirac like surface state with Rashba spin texture near the point, we observe a tilted Dirac cone with circularly shaped cross section and a Dirac crossing at 0.28 amp; 8201; amp; 8201; amp; 8201; within the projected bulk band gap of tungsten. This state has eye catching similarities to the spin locked surface state of a topological insulator.     Time of flight photoelectron momentum microscopy with 80 500 MHz photon sources electron optical pulse picker or bandpass pre filter

    The small time gaps of synchrotron radiation in conventional multi bunch mode 100 500 MHz or laser based sources with high pulse rate 80 MHz are prohibitive for time of flight ToF based photoelectron spectroscopy. Detectors with time resolution in the 100 ps range yield only 20 100 resolved time slices within the small time gap. Here we present two techniques of implementing efficient ToF recording at sources with high repetition rate. A fast electron optical beam blanking unit with GHz bandwidth, integrated in a photoelectron momentum microscope, allows electron optical pulse picking with any desired repetition period. Aberration free momentum distributions have been recorded at reduced pulse periods of 5 MHz at MAX II and 1.25 MHz at BESSY II . The approach is compared with two alternative solutions a bandpass pre filter here a hemispherical analyzer or a parasitic four bunch island orbit pulse train, coexisting with the multi bunch pattern on the main orbit. Chopping in the time domain or bandpass pre selection in the energy domain can both enable efficient ToF spectroscopy and photoelectron momentum microscopy at 100 500 MHz synchrotrons, highly repetitive lasers or cavity enhanced high harmonic sources. The high photon flux of a UV laser 80 MHz, lt;1 meV bandwidth facilitates momentum microscopy with an energy resolution of 4.2 meV and an analyzed region of interest ROI down to lt;800 nm.     Do higher corporate taxes reduce wages? : Micro evidence from Germany

    Because of endogeneity problems very few studies have been able to identify the incidence of corporate taxes on wages. We circumvent these problems by using an 11-year panel of data on 11,441 German municipalities' tax rates, 8 percent of which change each year, linked to administrative matched employer-employee data. Consistent with our theoretical model, we find a negative effect of corporate taxation on wages: a 1 euro increase in tax liabilities yields a 77 cent decrease in the wage bill. The direct wage effect, arising in a collective bargaining context, dominates, while the conventional indirect wage effect through reduced investment is empirically small due to regional labor mobility. High and medium-skilled workers, who arguably extract higher rents in collective agreements, bear a larger share of the corporate tax burden
