    In this study hardness and densification behaviour of copper and bronze powders under wet bag cold isostatic and uniaxial die pressing processes are examined. In uniaxial pressing the specimens were compacted up to a pressure of 800 MPa. Cold isostatic pressing (CIP) resulted in better densification for both of the studied powder materials. Attained densities were 94 % for copper and 82 % for bronze powders. In uniaxial die pressing greater pressurisation was needed to attain the same densification that obtained with CIP. The microhardness of both of the studied materials were measured before and after pressing processes. Higher pressure resulted in dislocation and strain hardening and increased hardness of powders.U ovom radu se istraživala promjena tvrdoće i povećanje gustoće prahova bakra i bronce prešanih na hladno u matrici smjerom jedne osi, te izostatski pomoću fluidnog medija. Pri hladnom prešanju u matrici smjerom jedne osi uzorci su kompaktirani s tlakovima do 800 MPa. Hladno izostatsko prešanje (CIP) rezultira znatnijim povećanjem gustoće kod oba praškasta materijala. Dobivene gustoće bile su 94 % za bakarni i 82 % za brončani prah. Kod prešanja u matrici smjerom jedne osi bilo je potrebno upotrijebiti veće tlakove da bi se postigla ista gustoća kao ona dobivena CIP postupkom. Mikrotvrdoća oba proučavana materijala mjerena je prije i nakon procesa prešanja. Veći tlakovi uzrokuju očvrščavanje dislokacijama i naprezanjem, te povećavaju tvrdoću prahova

    On fallback disks and magnetars

    The discovery of a disk around the anomalous X-ray pulsar 4U 0142+61, has rekindled the interest in fallback disks around magnetars. We briefly review the assumptions of fallback disk models and magnetar models. Earlier data in optical and near IR bands combined with new Spitzer data in the mid-IR range are compatible with a gas disk. Higher multipole fields with magnetar strengths together with a dipole field of 1012-1013 G on the neutron star surface are compatible with the presence of a disk around the neutron star. The possible presence and properties of a fallback disk after the supernova explosion is a likely initial condition to complement the initial rotation period and initial dipole field in determining the evolutionary paths and different types of isolated neutron stars

    A natural limit on the observable periods of anomalous x-ray pulsars and soft gamma-ray repeaters

    We investigate the dependence of the evolution of neutron stars with fallback disks on the strength of the magnetic dipole field of the star. Using the same model as employed by Ertan et al. (2009), we obtain model curves for different dipole fields showing that the neutron stars with magnetic dipole fields greater than ∼ 1013 G on the surface of the star are not likely to become anomalous X‐ray pulsars (AXPs) and soft gamma‐ray repeaters (SGRs). Other sources with conventional dipole fields evolve into the AXP phase if their disk can penetrate the light cylinder. The upper limits to the observed periods of AXP and SGRs could be understood if the disk becomes inactive below a low temperature around 100 K. We summarize our present and earlier results indicated by the evolutionary model curves of these sources with an emphasis on the importance of the minimum disk temperature and the X‐ray irradiation in the long‐term evolution of AXPs and SGRs with fallback disks

    Realistic modelling of quantum point contacts subject to high magnetic fields and with current bias at out of linear response regime

    The electron and current density distributions in the close proximity of quantum point contacts (QPCs) are investigated. A three dimensional Poisson equation is solved self-consistently to obtain the electron density and potential profile in the absence of an external magnetic field for gate and etching defined devices. We observe the surface charges and their apparent effect on the confinement potential, when considering the (deeply) etched QPCs. In the presence of an external magnetic field, we investigate the formation of the incompressible strips and their influence on the current distribution both in the linear response and out of linear response regime. A spatial asymmetry of the current carrying incompressible strips, induced by the large source drain voltages, is reported for such devices in the non-linear regime.Comment: 16 Pages, 9 Figures, submitted to PR

    The Plasmodium falciparum, Nima-related kinase Pfnek-4: a marker for asexual parasites committed to sexual differentiation

    <b>Background</b> Malaria parasites undergo, in the vertebrate host, a developmental switch from asexual replication to sexual differentiation leading to the formation of gametocytes, the only form able to survive in the mosquito vector. Regulation of the onset of the sexual phase remains largely unknown and represents an important gap in the understanding of the parasite's complex biology. <b>Methods:</b> The expression and function of the Nima-related kinase Pfnek-4 during the early sexual development of the human malaria parasite Plasmodium falciparum were investigated, using three types of transgenic Plasmodium falciparum 3D7 lines: (i) episomally expressing a Pfnek-4-GFP fusion protein under the control of its cognate pfnek-4 promoter; (ii) episomally expressing negative or positive selectable markers, yeast cytosine deaminase-uridyl phosphoribosyl transferase, or human dihydrofolate reductase, under the control of the pfnek-4 promoter; and (iii) lacking a functional pfnek-4 gene. Parasite transfectants were analysed by fluorescence microscopy and flow cytometry. In vitro growth rate and gametocyte formation were determined by Giemsa-stained blood smears. <b>Results:</b> The Pfnek-4-GFP protein was found to be expressed in stage II to V gametocytes and, unexpectedly, in a subset of asexual-stage parasites undergoing schizogony. Culture conditions stimulating gametocyte formation resulted in significant increase of this schizont subpopulation. Moreover, sorted asexual parasites expressing the Pfnek-4-GFP protein displayed elevated gametocyte formation when returned to in vitro culture in presence of fresh red blood cells, when compared to GFP- parasites from the same initial population. Negative selection of asexual parasites expressing pfnek-4 showed a marginal reduction in growth rate, whereas positive selection caused a marked reduction in parasitaemia, but was not sufficient to completely abolish proliferation. Pfnek-4- clones are not affected in their asexual growth and produced normal numbers of stage V gametocytes. <b>Conclusions:</b> The results indicate that Pfnek-4 is not strictly gametocyte-specific, and is expressed in a small subset of asexual parasites displaying high rate conversion to sexual development. Pfnek-4 is not required for erythrocytic schizogony and gametocytogenesis. This is the first study to report the use of a molecular marker for the sorting of sexually-committed schizont stage P. falciparum parasites, which opens the way to molecular characterization of this pre-differentiated subpopulation
