    Microstructural and morphological properties of homoepitaxial (001)ZnTe layers investigated by x-ray diffuse scattering

    The microstructural and morphological properties of homoepitaxial (001)ZnTe layers are investigated by x-ray diffuse scattering. High resolution reciprocal space maps recorded close to the ZnTe (004) Bragg peak show different diffuse scattering features. One kind of cross-shaped diffuse scattering streaks along directions can be attributed to stacking faults within the epilayers. Another kind of cross-shaped streaks inclined at an angle of about 80deg with respect to the in-plane direction arises from the morphology of the epilayers. (abridged version

    Trifarotene: a current review and perspectives in dermatology

    Retinoids have numerous applications in inflammatory, dyskeratotic, and oncohematology diseases. Retinoids have now reached the fourth generation, progressively reducing toxicity whilst increasing their efficacy. Trifarotene is a new fourth-generation retinoid with a selective action on RAR-γ. In this review, we reported the trials—both concluded and in progress—including the use of trifarotene in dermatological diseases. Studies were identified by searching electronic databases (MEDLINE, EMBASE, PubMed, Cochrane, Trials.gov) from 2012 to today and reference lists of respective articles. Only articles published in English language were included. Randomized trials evaluating trifarotene tolerability, safety, and efficacy in congenital ichthyosis and acne have demonstrated great results and mild side effects, leading to the approval by the FDA of trifarotene for the treatment of lamellar ichthyosis in 2014, and of acne vulgaris in October 2019. No high-quality randomized clinical trials have evaluated the treatment of primary cutaneous lymphomas with trifarotene. Finally, we are hypothesizing future perspectives in the treatment of non-melanoma skin cancers, fungal infections, photoaging, and hand-foot skin reactions with trifarotene

    Combined biological therapy with lanreotide autogel and cabergoline in the treatment of MEN-1-related insulinomas.

    Multiple endocrine neoplasia type 1 (MEN1) is a hereditary syndrome associated with the development of many endocrine tumors, involving mainly pituitary, parathyroids, pancreas, although a proliferative state interests all neuroendocrine system. MEN1 pancreatic neuroendocrine tumors (pNETs) are multiples and can secrete different hormones. The therapeutic approach is based on surgery which usually is followed by tumor relapse or persistence unless to be highly aggressive. Biotherapy with somatostatin analogs and dopamine agonists could be of great benefit to manage these patients without altering their life quality. We report a case of a 36-year-old MEN1 man affected with multicentric pNETs associated with insulinoma syndrome. Therapy with symptomatic agents (diazoxide), as well as biotherapy (lanreotide, cabergoline) was started. At 6-month follow-up, symptomatic agents were stopped and disease control was only based on lanreotide plus cabergoline. This combined biotherapy was able to control endocrine syndromes and tumor growth. Subsequently, a safer and selective surgical intervention on pNETs was performed. An excellent response to therapy with lanreotide autogel and cabergoline has been observed in a MEN1 patient with pNETs associated with insulinoma syndrome. The potential synergistic effects of lanreotide autogel and cabergoline on insulin-secreting neuroendocrine tumors are discussed

    CD8 T-cell clones producing interleukin-5 and interferon-gamma in bronchial mucosa of patients with asthma induced by toluene diisocyanate

    OBJECTIVES - The aims of the present study were to determine whether specific in vivo stimulation of asthmatics sensitized with toluene diisocyanate (TDI) induces the activation of T lymphocytes in bronchial mucosa and to characterize their phenotype and cytokine secretion profile.METHODS - Bronchial biopsies from two subjects with occupational asthma due to TDI were obtained 48 h after an asthmatic reaction induced by an inhalation challenge with TDI and after three months of no exposure to TDI, at the time when the subjects had recovered from their asthma. The fragments of bronchial mucosa were cultured in the presence of interleukin-2 so that the in vivo activated T cells present in the tissue would expand, and T blasts were then cloned under limiting dilution conditions.RESULTS - From the two 48-h specimens, 65 and 63 T-cell clones were obtained. Most of the clones exhibited the CD8 phenotype (82 and 83%). All of the CD8 clones produced interferon-gamma and 44% produced interleukin-5, but only 6% secreted interleukin-4 as well. Three months after the cessation of exposure, growing T cells could not be recovered from bronchial biopsies cultured in interleukin-2.CONCLUSIONS - The results suggest that, in sensitized subjects, exposure to TDI induces the activation of a subset of CD8 lymphocytes producing interferon-gamma and interleukin-5

    Prognostic and therapeutic role of angiogenic microenvironment in thyroid cancer

    Thyroid cancer is the most common endocrine malignancy, with a typically favorable prognosis following standard treatments, such as surgical resection and radioiodine therapy. A subset of thyroid cancers progress to refractory/metastatic disease. Understanding how the tumor microenvironment is transformed into an angiogenic microenvironment has a role of primary importance in the aggressive behavior of these neoplasms. During tumor growth and progression, angiogenesis represents a deregulated biological process, and the angiogenic switch, characterized by the formation of new vessels, induces tumor cell proliferation, local invasion, and hematogenous metastases. This evidence has propelled the scientific community’s effort to study a number of molecular pathways (proliferation, cell cycle control, and angiogenic processes), identifying mediators that may represent viable targets for new anticancer treatments. Herein, we sought to review angiogenesis in thyroid cancer and the potential role of proangiogenic cytokines for risk stratification of patients. We also present the current status of treatment of advanced differentiated, medullary, and poorly differentiated thyroid cancers with multiple tyrosine kinase inhibitors, based on the rationale of angiogenesis as a potential therapeutic target

    Clustering effects in 48Cr composite nuclei produced via 24Mg + 24Mg reaction

    In the framework of studying clustering effects in N=Z light nuclei, an experiment was carried out to get information on the properties of the 48 Cr composite nuclei produced via the 24 Mg +24 Mg reaction. In particular, the study regards the 48 Cr at 60 MeV of excitation energy where a resonance with a narrow width (170 KeV) has been found by measuring the elastic and anelastic channels. To determine the deformation of this state, evaporative Light Charged Particles (LCP) are measured and compared to the Statistical Model (SM) predictions, which are very sensitive to nuclear deformation. The experiment was performed at LNL using the 8ĒLP apparatus to select LCPs and a Parallel Plate Avalanche Counter (PPAC) system to detect the Evaporation Residues (ER). Preliminary results on the measurements of ER – LCP and LCP – LCP angular correlations are presented which indicate the presence of a very large deformation.The analysis will proceed with the extraction of the LCP energy spectra and with the angular correlations for high multiplicity channels to determine the deformation

    Examination of isospin effects in multi-dimensional Langevin fission dynamics

    Abstract One-dimensional and three-dimensional dynamical fission calculations based on Langevin equations are performed for the compound nuclei 194 Pb, 200 Pb, 206 Pb, 182 Hg, and 204 Hg to investigate the influence of the compound nucleus isospin on the prescission particle multiplicities and on the fission fragment mass–energy distribution. It is found that the prescission neutron, proton, and alpha particle multiplicities have approximately the same sensitivity to the dissipation strength for a given nucleus. This is at variance with conclusions of recent papers. The sensitivity of the calculated prescission particle multiplicities to the dissipation strength becomes higher with decreasing isospin of fissioning compound nucleus, and the increase of prescission particle multiplicities could reach 200%, when the reduction coefficient of one-body viscosity k s increases from 0.1 to 1, for the most neutron deficient nuclei considered. The variances of fission fragment mass and kinetic energy distributions are less sensitive to the change of dissipation strength than the prescission light particle multiplicities. A comparison to experimental data concerning 200 Pb nucleus is also presented
