It then goes on to describe an approach for estimating the current combined biophysical resource demands of aquaculture for producer countries and regions. Following a comparison of these results with those available for other animal food production sectors the report then examines the consequences of likely future trends in production on the environmental impacts of aquaculture. Finally, the policy implications of the report’s findings are discussed along with the research agenda that should be pursued to meet the challenge of sustainable food production

    Interspecific hybridization within Eucalyptus (Myrtaceae): Subgenus Symphyomyrtus, sections Bisectae and Adnataria

    Copyright © 2001 The University of Chicago PressThe potential for interspecific hybridization within the genus Eucalyptus was investigated through controlled pollination and measurement of seedling leaf morphology. Eucalyptus gillii and E. socialis (subgen. Symphyomyrtus sect. Bisectae ser. Subulatae) were used as the female parents, and pollen was sourced from 16 Eucalyptus species from a number of series within sections Bisectae and Adnataria (subgen. Symphyomyrtus). Thirty-four out of 36 crosses produced seeds; however, the percentage of seeds produced per flower pollinated varied considerably between crosses, as did germination percentage and seedling survival. At 3 mo of age, all surviving seedlings were measured for 15 leaf and stem characters. Multivariate analysis (ordination) of the data from each cross placed the seedlings in relation to their parents, with most crosses intermediate, albeit closer to the maternal parent. Successful hybridization occurred within sect. Bisectae ser. Subulatae and between ser. Subulatae and sect. Bisectae ser. Kruseanae, ser. Levispermae, ser. Curviptera, ser. Erectae and sect. Adnataria ser. Heterophloiae. In contrast, crosses between sect. Bisectae ser. Subulatae and sect. Adnataria ser. Aquilonares and ser. Melliodorae did not produce hybrids. Yet, despite this clear progress rural poverty and food insecurity remain deeply entrenched in many areas, especially in South Asia and sub-Saharan Africa. In response the international community has renewed calls for increased commitment to meeting the needs of the world's poor.     CRITICAL SPEED AND CRITICAL STROKE RATE COULD BE USEFUL PHYSIOLOGICAL AND TECHNICAL CRITERIA FOR COACHES TO MONITOR ENDURANCE PERFORMANCE IN COMPETITIVE SWIMMERS

    The purposes of this study were to determine whether the concepts of critical swimming speed (CSS) and critical stroke rate (CSR) could be reliable and used by coaches in order to control and monitor endurance performance in competitive swimmers. The results of this study conducted with well-trained swimmers showed that CSS could be determined easily from two common distances and more accurately from 200- and 400-m tests after a correction of minus 1.4 %. Moreover, CSS was well correlated with swimming velocity corresponding to 4 mmol.l-1 of blood lactate concentration and could avoid using lactate testing. Furthermore, the concept of a critical stroke rate defined as ‘the stroke rate value, which can be theoretically maintained continuously indefinitely without exhaustion’ and expressed, as the slope of the regression line between the number of stroke cycles and time seemed to be reliable.     Illumination with single nanosecond pulses leads to the detachment of silica particles with 250nm radii from siliconsurfaces. We identify two laser-energy dependent cleaning regimes by time-of-flight particle-scattering diagnostics. For the higher energies, the ejection of particles is produced by nanoscale ablation due to the laser field enhancement at the particle-surface interface. The damage-free regime at lower energy is shown to be governed by the residual water molecules, which are inevitably trapped on the materials. We discuss the great importance that the humidity plays on the cleaning force and on the adhesion in the experiments.Peer reviewe

    Full-length sequence analysis of SIVmus in wild populations of mustached monkeys (Cercopithecus cephus) from Cameroon provides evidence for two co-circulating SIVmus lineages

    AbstractMustached monkeys (Cercopithecus cephus), which form a significant component of primate bushmeat in west central Africa, are infected with simian immunodeficiency virus (SIVmus). We identified and genetically characterized five new SIVmus strains infecting wild living mustached monkeys from Cameroon. Phylogenetic analysis of partial pol sequences revealed that SIVmus strains form two distinct groups within the clade comprised of lentiviruses isolated from Cercopithecus nictitans (SIVgsn), Cercopithecus mona (SIVmon) and C. cephus (SIVmus). Characterisation of three full-length SIVmus genomes confirmed the presence of two distinct lineages infecting mustached monkeys. These two variants of SIVmus, here designated SIVmus-1 and SIVmus-2, were isolated from animals sharing habitats within the same geographic region. Phylogenetic analyses showed that the diversification of SIVmus, SIVgsn and SIVmon involved inter-lineage recombination, and suggested that one of the SIVmus lineages likely resulted from cross-species transmission and recombination involving SIVmus and an as yet uncharacterized SIV. These results indicate that cross-species transmission and recombination play a major role in the evolution of primate lentiviruses among sympatric primate species
