This doctoral capstone was completed through a partnership with the Center for Courageous Kids in Scottsville, KY. Center for Courageous Kids is a fully accessible medical camp that provides children with serious illnesses and medical complexities the opportunity to participate in camp. They run weekend family retreats during the spring and fall, and independent camps during the summer. The goals of this project were completed in two parts. Part 1: To create a video to play during family camp weekend retreats to reach potential campers for independent summer camp. The video portrays what summer camp is all about through the eyes of former campers, parents, staff members, healthcare partners, and volunteers. Part 2: To create recourses for volunteers working in program areas during spring family retreats to make them feel more comfortable and knowledgeable about the area he/she will be working in while at camp, along with the diagnosis of the campers that week. Interventions, adaptive equipment, and strategies for the program areas were provided to give volunteers ideas on how to facilitate camper success in participating in activities to their fullest ability based on potential deficit areas a specific diagnosis may face

After-School Programs and Academic Impact: A Study of Chicago's After School Matters

What impact can after-school programs have on the educational achievement of high school students? A new study of Chicago's After School Matters (ASM) program -- which offers paid internships in the arts, technology, sports, and communications to teenagers in some of the city's most underserved schools -- finds a relationship between participating in after-school activities and higher class attendance, lower course failures and higher graduation rates.Even after taking into account student demographic characteristics and prior attendance records, students who participate in ASM miss fewer days of school than their classmates. Similarly, students who participated at the highest levels in the after-school program tended to fail fewer core academic courses (English, Math, Science, and Social Studies). Furthermore, over the course of their time in high school, students who were enrolled in ASM for three or more semesters and those who participated at the highest levels had higher rates of graduation and lower dropout rates than similar students who did not participate in the program. The findings in this report highlight the importance of further research into what leads students to participate in after-school programs and the factors that lead to higher engagement and retention once they are enrolled. A better understanding is crucial for improving enrollment in after-school programs such as ASM. Moreover, accounting for student factors that lead to a greater engagement in the program will lead to a clearer understanding of ASM's contribution to the positive outcomes -- independent of hard-to-observe student characteristics such as enthusiasm or dedication

Study of Dairy Manure N Cycling in Soil-Plant Continuum Using \u3csup\u3e15\u3c/sup\u3eN and Other Methods

Ruminant livestock manure impacts on N cycling in the soil-plant continuum. Most studies of manure N cycling are short-term and rely on indirect methods, i.e. apparent N recovery, fertiliser N equivalents or incorporate 15N into ammonium-N fractions. Direct and perhaps more precise measurements may be achieved by long-term studies using 15N incorporated into all manure N components. This paper summarises results of a 6- year trial to compare indirect and direct measures of manure N uptake by corn for 3 years after application

Oral History in University Archives: A Case Study of the Student Leadership Initiative at North Carolina State University Libraries' Special Collections Research Center

    Get PDF
During the mid-twentieth century, oral history gained prominence both as a method of historical inquiry and as a documentation strategy that could help fill in gaps in existing archival collections. Although oral history has many potential benefits for archival repositories, there are also compelling reasons that indicate archivists should not conduct oral history interviews. This study is an examination of the Student Leadership Initiative, a multi-year oral history project conducted at the Special Collections Research Center at North Carolina State University. By interviewing five library staff members involved with the project, the researcher attempted to determine the motivation for and process of implementing an oral history project in a university archives that does not have a permanent oral history program. The study also shows how one university's archives used oral history to enhance its collections, connect with alumni, and provide training opportunities for graduate students in the Department of History
