X-linked reticulate pigmentary disorder (XLPDR) is a rare, multi-systemic disease with only a limited number of families described in the literature. XLPDR has a genetic origin and the gene has been mapped to Zp22p21. Dental features resemble those of hypohidrotic ectodermal dysplasia. A case of a 3-years-old boy is described

Oral manifestation of Goltz-Gorlin syndrome in a young girl

Introduction Focal dermal hypoplasia (Goltz-Gorlin syndrome) is a multi-system disorder characterized by involvement of skin, skeletal system, eyes and face. It is caused by loss-of-function mutations in the PORCN gene. We report the case of a young female, focusing on the dental features. Aim To describe the oral manifestation of a rare disorder that resembles ectodermal dysplasia (ED). Case report Clinical, radiological and genetic findings revealed common features of Goltz-Gorlin syndrome and pure ED. Oro-dental characteristics of the patient mostly corresponded to those described in the literature. However, previously unreported oro-dental findings such as taurodontism, peg-shaped teeth and microdontia are considered unusual for Goltz-Gorlin syndrome, but similar to the dental features of hypohidrotic ED. Clinical characterization of the patient by a multidisciplinary approach is described and a comprehensive review of the literature is presented

Silver-Russell syndrome. Clinical and etiopathological aspects of a model genomic imprinting entity

Silver-Russell syndrome is characterized by asymmetrical intrauterine growth retardation, with normal head circumference and small, pointed chin, which results in a triangular face. It can also include body asymmetry, among other characteristics. Its global incidence is estimated at 1 in 30 000-100 000 births, even though this figure may be underestimated. In approximately 60 % of cases, a molecular cause can be identified, and the main one is hypomethylation of the paternal allele at the imprinting control region 1 located at 11p15.5-p15.4. It is necessary to make the diagnosis of this entity, exclude differential diagnoses, and know (epi)genotype-phenotype correlations in order to ensure an adequate follow-up, provide available therapeutic options, and offer a timely family genetic counseling. The objective of this article is to describe the current status of the Silver-Russell syndrome, a model of genomic imprinting disorder

Cases of cryptosporidiosis co-infections in AIDS patients: a correlation between clinical presentation and GP60 subgenotype lineages from aged formalin-fixed stool samples

Nine cases of cryptosporidiosis co-infections in AIDS patients were clinically categorised into severe (patients 1, 3, 8 and 9), moderate (patients 4 and 5) and mild (patients 2, 6 and 7). Formalin-fixed faecal specimens from these patients were treated to obtain high quality DNA competent for amplification and sequencing of the 60-kDa glycoprotein (GP60) gene. Sequence analysis revealed that one patient was infected with Cryptosporidium hominis whereas the remaining eight patients were infected with C. parvum. Interestingly, the patients showing severe cryptosporidiosis harboured two subtypes within the C. parvum allelic family IIc (IIcA5G3 and IIcA5G3R2), whereas patients with moderate or mild infections showed various subtypes of the C. parvum allelic family IIa (IIaA14G2R1, IIaA15G2R1, IIaA17G3R1 and IIaA18G3R1)

Lipid peroxidation and protein oxidation in patients affected by Hodgkin's lymphoma.

A dysregulation of the redox homoeostasis has been reported in various neoplastic disorders. Malondialdehyde/4-hydroxy-2,3-nonenal (MDA/HNE) and protein carbonyl groups represent in vivo indexes of lipid peroxidation and protein oxidation, respectively, suitable to investigate radical-mediated physio-pathological conditions. We evaluated MDA/HNE and protein carbonyl groups in sera of untreated Hodgkin's lymphoma (HL) patients in advanced disease stages, in order to quantify the oxidative stress. HL patients displayed significantly higher levels of both MDA/HNE and protein carbonyl groups as compared with healthy controls. This is the first evidence that a strong increase in HL is one of the most common haematological malignancies, representing approximately 30% of all lymphomas in the circulating protein carbonyl content in HL. These findings may contribute to a better definition of the redox homoeostasis dysregulation in HL
