Pulsar timing arrays as imaging gravitational wave telescopes: angular resolution and source (de)confusion
Pulsar timing arrays (PTAs) will be sensitive to a finite number of
gravitational wave (GW) "point" sources (e.g. supermassive black hole
binaries). N quiet pulsars with accurately known distances d_{pulsar} can
characterize up to 2N/7 distant chirping sources per frequency bin \Delta
f_{gw}=1/T, and localize them with "diffraction limited" precision \delta\theta
\gtrsim (1/SNR)(\lambda_{gw}/d_{pulsar}). Even if the pulsar distances are
poorly known, a PTA with F frequency bins can still characterize up to
(2N/7)[1-(1/2F)] sources per bin, and the quasi-singular pattern of timing
residuals in the vicinity of a GW source still allows the source to be
localized quasi-topologically within roughly the smallest quadrilateral of
quiet pulsars that encircles it on the sky, down to a limiting resolution
\delta\theta \gtrsim (1/SNR) \sqrt{\lambda_{gw}/d_{pulsar}}. PTAs may be
unconfused, even at the lowest frequencies, with matched filtering always

A serological diagnosis of coeliac disease is associated with osteoporosis in older Australian adults
Previously thought to be mainly a disorder of childhood and early adult life, coeliac disease (CeD) is increasingly diagnosed in older adults. This may be important given the association between CeD and osteoporosis. The primary aim of this study was to determine the seroprevalence of undiagnosed CeD (âat-risk serologyâ) in an older Australian community and relate this to a diagnosis of osteoporosis and fractures during a follow-up period of 12 years. We included participants from the Hunter Community Study (2004â2007) aged 55â85, who had anti-tissue transglutaminase (tTG) titres, human leukocyte antigen (HLA) genotypes, and bone mineral density measurements at baseline. Follow-up data included subsequent diagnosis of CeD and fractures using hospital information. âAt-riskâ serology was defined as both tTG and HLA positivity. Complete results were obtained from 2122 patients. The prevalence of âat-riskâ serology was 5%. At baseline, 3.4% fulfilled criteria for a diagnosis of osteoporosis. During a mean of 9.7 years of follow-up, 7.4% of the cohort suffered at least one fracture and 0.7% were subsequently diagnosed with CeD. At-risk serology was significantly associated with osteoporosis in a multivariate model (odds ratio 2.83, 95% confidence interval 1.29â6.22); there was insufficient power to look at the outcome of fractures. The results of this study demonstrate that at-risk CeD serology was significantly associated with concurrent osteoporosis but not future fractures. Most individuals with a serological diagnosis of CeD were not diagnosed with CeD during the follow-up period according to medical records. Topological surface states above the Fermi level in Hf2Te2 P
We report a detailed experimental study of the band structure of the recently discovered topological material Hf2Te2P. Using the combination of scanning tunneling spectroscopy and angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy with surface K doping, we probe the band structure of Hf2Te2P with energy and momentum resolution above the Fermi level. Our experiments show the presence of multiple surface states with a linear Dirac-like dispersion, consistent with the predictions from previously reported band-structure calculations. In particular, scanning tunneling spectroscopy measurements provide experimental evidence for the strong topological surface state predicted at 460meV, which stems from the band inversion between Hf-d and Te-p orbitals. This band inversion comprised of more localized d states could result in a better surface-to-bulk conductance ratio relative to more traditional topological insulators
The Supernova Relic Neutrino Background
An upper bound to the supernova relic neutrino background from all past Type
II supernovae is obtained using observations of the Universal metal enrichment
history. We show that an unambiguous detection of these relic neutrinos by the
Super-Kamiokande detector is unlikely. We also analyze the event rate in the
Sudbury Neutrino Observatory (where coincident neutrons from anti-nu_e + D -->
n + n + e+ might enhance background rejection), and arrive at the same
conclusion. If the relic neutrino flux should be observed to exceed our upper
bound and if the observations of the metal enrichment history (for z<1) are not
in considerable error, then either the Type II supernova rate does not track
the metal enrichment history or some mechanism may be responsible for
transforming anti-nu_{mu,tau} --> anti-nu_e.Comment: Matches version accepted for publication in Phys. Rev.
Insights into high-risk multiple myeloma from an analysis of the role of PHF19 in cancer
Despite improvements in outcome, 15-25% of newly diagnosed multiple myeloma (MM) patients have treatment resistant high-risk (HR) disease with a poor survival. The lack of a genetic basis for HR has focused attention on the role played by epigenetic changes. Aberrant expression and somatic mutations affecting genes involved in the regulation of tri-methylation of the lysine (K) 27 on histone 3 H3 (H3K27me3) are common in cancer. H3K27me3 is catalyzed by EZH2, the catalytic subunit of the Polycomb Repressive Complex 2 (PRC2). The deregulation of H3K27me3 has been shown to be involved in oncogenic transformation and tumor progression in a variety of hematological malignancies including MM. Recently we have shown that aberrant overexpression of the PRC2 subunit PHD Finger Protein 19 (PHF19) is the most significant overall contributor to HR status further focusing attention on the role played by epigenetic change in MM. By modulating both the PRC2/EZH2 catalytic activity and recruitment, PHF19 regulates the expression of key genes involved in cell growth and differentiation. Here we review the expression, regulation and function of PHF19 both in normal and the pathological contexts of solid cancers and MM. We present evidence that strongly implicates PHF19 in the regulation of genes important in cell cycle and the genetic stability of MM cells making it highly relevant to HR MM behavior. A detailed understanding of the normal and pathological functions of PHF19 will allow us to design therapeutic strategies able to target aggressive subsets of MM
Multiscale Bone Remodelling with Spatial P Systems
Many biological phenomena are inherently multiscale, i.e. they are
characterized by interactions involving different spatial and temporal scales
simultaneously. Though several approaches have been proposed to provide
"multilayer" models, only Complex Automata, derived from Cellular Automata,
naturally embed spatial information and realize multiscaling with
well-established inter-scale integration schemas. Spatial P systems, a variant
of P systems in which a more geometric concept of space has been added, have
several characteristics in common with Cellular Automata. We propose such a
formalism as a basis to rephrase the Complex Automata multiscaling approach
and, in this perspective, provide a 2-scale Spatial P system describing bone
remodelling. The proposed model not only results to be highly faithful and
expressive in a multiscale scenario, but also highlights the need of a deep and
formal expressiveness study involving Complex Automata, Spatial P systems and
other promising multiscale approaches, such as our shape-based one already

Changes in body weight and food choice in those attempting smoking cessation: a cluster randomised controlled trial
<p><b>Background:</b> Fear of weight gain is a barrier to smoking cessation and significant cause of relapse for many people. The provision of nutritional advice as part of a smoking cessation programme may assist some in smoking cessation and perhaps limit weight gain. The aim of this study was to determine the effect of a structured programme of dietary advice on weight change and food choice, in adults attempting smoking cessation.</p>
<p><b>Methods:</b> Cluster randomised controlled design. Classes randomised to intervention commenced a 24-week intervention, focussed on improving food choice and minimising weight gain. Classes randomised to control received "usual care".</p>
<p><b>Results:</b> Twenty-seven classes in Greater Glasgow were randomised between January and August 2008. Analysis, including those who continued to smoke, showed that actual weight gain and percentage weight gain was similar in both groups. Examination of data for those successful at giving up smoking showed greater mean weight gain in intervention subjects (3.9 (SD 3.1) vs. 2.7 (SD 3.7) kg). Between group differences were not significant (p=0.23, 95% CI -0.9 to 3.5). In comparison to baseline improved consumption of fruit and vegetables and breakfast cereal were reported in the intervention group. A higher percentage of control participants continued smoking (74% vs. 66%).</p>
<p><b>Conclusions:</b> The intervention was not successful at minimising weight gain in comparison to control but was successful in facilitating some sustained improvements in the dietary habits of intervention participants. Improved quit rates in the intervention group suggest that continued contact with advisors may have reduced anxieties regarding weight gain and encouraged cessation despite weight gain. Research should continue in this area as evidence suggests that the negative effects of obesity could outweigh the health benefits achieved through reductions in smoking prevalence.</p>
