Accent attribution in speakers with Foreign Accent Syndrome
Purpose: The main aim of this experiment was to establish the extent to which the impression of foreignness in speakers with Foreign Accent Syndrome (FAS) is in any way comparable to the impression of foreignness in speakers with a real foreign accent.
Method: Three groups of listeners attributed accents to conversational speech samples of 5 FAS speakers which were embedded amongst those of 5 speakers with a real foreign accent and 5 native speaker controls. The listener groups differed in their familiarity with foreign accented speech and speech pathology.
Results: The findings indicate that listeners’ perceptual reactions to the three groups of speakers are essentially different at all levels of analysis. The native speaker controls are unequivocally considered as native speakers of Dutch while the speakers with a real foreign accent are very reliably assessed as non-native speakers. The speakers with Foreign Accent Syndrome, however, are in some sense perceived as foreign and in some sense as native by listeners, but not as foreign as speakers with a real foreign accent nor as native as real native speakers. This result may be accounted for in terms of the trigger support model of foreign accent perception.
Conclusions: The findings of the experiment is consistent with the idea that the very nature of the foreign accent in different in both groups of speakers, although it cannot be fully excluded that the perceived foreignness in the two groups is one of degree

Visuo-spatial cognition in Williams syndrome: Reviewing and accounting for the strengths and weaknesses in performance
Individuals with Williams syndrome typically show relatively poor visuo-spatial abilities in comparison to stronger verbal skills. However, individuals' level of performance is not consistent across all visuo-spatial tasks. The studies assessing visuo-spatial functioning in Williams syndrome are critically reviewed, in order to provide a clear pattern of the relative difficulty of these tasks. This prompts a possible explanation of the variability in performance seen which focuses on the processing demands of some of these tasks. Individuals with Williams syndrome show an atypical processing style on tests of construction, which does not affect tests of perception
Resting-State Brain Activity in Adult Males Who Stutter
Although developmental stuttering has been extensively studied with structural and task-based functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI), few studies have focused on resting-state brain activity in this disorder. We investigated resting-state brain activity of stuttering subjects by analyzing the amplitude of low-frequency fluctuation (ALFF), region of interest (ROI)-based functional connectivity (FC) and independent component analysis (ICA)-based FC. Forty-four adult males with developmental stuttering and 46 age-matched fluent male controls were scanned using resting-state fMRI. ALFF, ROI-based FCs and ICA-based FCs were compared between male stuttering subjects and fluent controls in a voxel-wise manner. Compared with fluent controls, stuttering subjects showed increased ALFF in left brain areas related to speech motor and auditory functions and bilateral prefrontal cortices related to cognitive control. However, stuttering subjects showed decreased ALFF in the left posterior language reception area and bilateral non-speech motor areas. ROI-based FC analysis revealed decreased FC between the posterior language area involved in the perception and decoding of sensory information and anterior brain area involved in the initiation of speech motor function, as well as increased FC within anterior or posterior speech- and language-associated areas and between the prefrontal areas and default-mode network (DMN) in stuttering subjects. ICA showed that stuttering subjects had decreased FC in the DMN and increased FC in the sensorimotor network. Our findings support the concept that stuttering subjects have deficits in multiple functional systems (motor, language, auditory and DMN) and in the connections between them
Dysfluency and phonic tics in Tourette syndrome: A case report.
Tourette syndrome, a condition first recognized in 1825, is characterized by the presence of multiple motor tics and one or more phonic tics. Individuals with Tourette syndrome may also demonstrate fluency failures in their speech. This study investigated the disfluencies and phonic tics in an 18-year-old affected male before and after a three week period of speech therapy. It was found that the speech pattern displayed by this subject did not completely conform to the classic pattern of stuttering but did bear more resemblance to cluttering. A limited number of therapy sessions resulted in a significant improvement of speech. Copyright (C) 2000 Elsevier Science Inc
Disfluency in Tourette syndrome: observational study in three cases
It is often stated that stuttering is a common speech disorder in individuals with Tourette syndrome (TS). It has also been suggested, however, that the fluency failures observed in people with TS do not completely conform to the classic pattern of stuttering. The present paper describes the results of an analysis of the speech patterns of three individuals with TS. A picture emerged that bears some resemblance to stuttering, cluttering, and palilalia but that is also different from each of these disfluency types. Copyright © 2004 S. Karger AG, Basel
