    Direct Human Service Experience and its Effect on Volunteers\u27 Self-Perceived Generosity and Meeting Volunteer Expectations

    A study using participants (n=61) from a small liberal arts college was conducted to analyze the effect of direct human service on volunteers’ self‐perceived generosity, expected versus actual appreciation, expected versus actual satisfaction in work, and expected versus actual value of work. An experimental group (n=31) was given pre‐ and post‐surveys evaluating these dependent variables using a Likert scale. Between the surveys the experimental group received treatment of direct human service at a free community lunch program. The control group (n=30) was given the same pre‐ and postsurveys without treatment. It was hypothesized that direct human service would cause a significant decrease in the dependent variables. It was found that there was a significant difference in the reported self‐perception of generosity in the pre‐surveys between the control group (M=15.17) and experimental group (M=16.52), t(59) =‐2.02, pt(59)=‐1.66, p\u3e.05. There was a significant difference in the expected satisfaction between the control (M=15.40) and experimental (M=18.61) groups, t(59) = ‐4.48, pM=16.53) and experimental (M=19.17) groups, t(58) = ‐3.53, pM=10.33) and the experimental group (M=12.29), t(59) = ‐3.91, pM=9.73) and the experimental group (M=12.35), t(59) = ‐4.26,

    An Analysis of Graduate Teaching Assistants’ Noticing Skills During Calculus and Physics Tutoring Scenarios

    Professional noticing of mathematical thinking, as defined by Jacobs, Lamb, and Philipp (2010) can be broken down into three components: attending to relevant cues, interpreting the mathematical understanding, and deciding the next best instructional steps. Most research on this topic has been conducted with elementary children. However, there is a gap in the research on professional noticing at more advanced levels, particularly college students. The purpose of this study was to take the concept of professional noticing and apply it to mathematics education at the post-secondary level. Specifically, the question we sought to answer in this study was: To what extent do mathematics and physics Teaching Assistants (TAs) attend and interpret student thinking when making decisions in their classroom? Mathematics and Physics TAs (n = 20) participated in this study focusing on their professional noticing skills when analyzing a college student struggling with two calculus-based problems. Results show that the TAs struggle most with interpreting student understanding and that those with more experience are better at deciding the next steps. Additionally, there is some data to support that knowledge of the content can impact their decision-making skills

    The hemispherical 10" photomultiplier tube (PMT) R7081 from Hamamatsu Photonics K.K. (HPK) is used in various experiments in particle and astroparticle physics. We describe the test and calibration of 474 PMTs for the reactor antineutrino experiment Double Chooz. The unique test setup at Max-Planck-Institut f\"ur Kernphysik Heidelberg (MPIK) allows one to calibrate 30 PMTs simultaneously and to characterize the single photo electron response, transit time spread, linear behaviour and saturation effects, photon detection efficiency and high voltage calibration

    ANNA Tool: A Way to Connect Future and Past Students in STEM

    The 'Increasing Gender Diversity in STEM' project involved six different partner universities around Europe. The scope of the project was to investigate the gender difference in self-perception of students in relation to their career choice. This was done through a web-based app, ANNA tool, that allows high school students to match their own personality, views, and expectations to those of engineering students and professional engineers. In the meantime, the data collection gave the opportunity to take a look at how students perceive their university and undergraduate program. This pilot application is then been further studied in order to analyse its scalability in other countries with broader STEM content
