    Uniform Decay of Local Energy and the Semi-Linear Wave Equation on Schwarzchild Space

    We provide a uniform decay estimate of Morawetz type for the local energy of general solutions to the inhomogeneous wave equation on a Schwarzchild background. This estimate is both uniform in space and time, so in particular it implies a uniform bound on the sup norm of solutions which can be given in terms of certain inverse powers of the radial and advanced/retarded time coordinate variables. As a model application, we show these estimates give a very simple proof small amplitude scattering for nonlinear scalar fields with higher than cubic interactions.Comment: 24 page

    Degradation of electro-optic components aboard LDEF

    Remeasurement of the properties of a set of electro-optic components exposed to the low-earth environment aboard the Long Duration Exposure Facility (LDEF) indicates that most components survived quite well. Typical components showed some effects related to the space environment unless well protected. The effects were often small but significant. Results for semiconductor infrared detectors, lasers, and LED's, as well as filters, mirrors, and black paints are described. Semiconductor detectors and emitters were scarred but reproduced their original characteristics. Spectral characteristics of multi-layer dielectric filters and mirrors were found to be altered and degraded. Increased absorption in black paints indicates an increase in absorption sites, giving rise to enhanced performance as coatings for baffles and sunscreens

    MEMS-actuated wavelength drop filter based on microsphere whispering gallery modes

    MEMS-enabled tuneable optical coupling between optical microsphere resonators and optical fibre waveguides is reported. We describe the design, fabrication and experimental characterization of a MEMS platform, based on electrothermal actuators, which controls the resonator-to-waveguide separation. We compare the simulated and experimental displacements of the actuators in an unloaded and loaded state, where the load is a 1 mm optical spherical resonator. We then demonstrate the proof of concept application of selective wavelength dropping using the MEMS platform by modulating the coupling between the spherical resonator and a tapered optical fibre waveguide

    Electrical properties of evaporated carbon films

    Uniform thin films of carbon in the thickness range 100 to 2300 Angstroms have been prepared by arc evaporation in vacuo. Large direct currents permitted evaporation rates of approximately 50 Angstroms per second. The properties of these films suggest that unannealed arc evaporated carbon had less long-range order and was, therefore, more truly amorphous in structure than any other form of carbon yet obtained. After the films had been heated to 1,200°K. however, their properties were similar to ordinary fine particle carbon blacks, apparently as a result of increased ordering in graphite layers without ordering between layers. Electron diffraction pictures were similar to the x-ray diffraction pictures of fine particle carbon blacks. No structure was visible with an electron microscope. The electrical resistivity of unannealed films followed ohms law, was not photo-sensitive, and could be well represented in the temperature range 77°K. to 300°K. by the equation R = AT-b, where b = 5. When the carbon films were heated above room temperature, the resistivity and the exponent b were both decreased substantially. After the films had been annealed at 1,200°K., the resistivity was reduced by a factor exceeding 800, and could be best represented, in the temperature range 77°K. to 1,200°K., by the equation R = alpha - betaT. The values of the resistivity, temperature coefficient of resistivity, and thermoelectric power of the annealed films were then more nearly in agreement with the corresponding values for ordinary fine particle carbon blacks. Hall voltages were not large enough to be observed. No infrared absorption bands indicating possible bend resonances were observed. The effects of absorbed gases, thermo-mechanical effects, and structure dependent effects, are briefly considered, and the possible applications of the properties of these carbon films are discussed

    Postrecovery characteristics of LDEF electro-optic components from the GTRI tray are compared with their prelaunch characteristics and with the characteristics of similar components from related experiments. Components considered here include lasers, light-emitting diodes, semiconducting radiation detectors and arrays, optical substrates, filters, and mirrors, and specialized coatings. Our understanding of the physical effects resulting from low earth orbit are described, and guidelines and recommendations for component and materials choices are presented

    Degradation of optical components in space

    This report concerns two types of optical components: multilayer filters and mirrors, and self-scanned imaging arrays using charge coupled device (CCD) readouts. For the filters and mirrors, contamination produces a strong reduction in transmittance in the ultraviolet spectral region, but has little or no effect in the visible and infrared spectral regions. Soft substrates containing halides are unsatisfactory as windows or substrates. Materials choice for dielectric layers should also reflect such considerations. Best performance is also found for the harder materials. Compaction of the layers and interlayer diffusion causes a blue shift in center wavelength and loss of throughput. For sensors using CCD's, shifts in gate voltage and reductions in transfer efficiency occur. Such effects in CCD's are in accord with expectations of the effects of the radiation dose on the device. Except for optical fiber, degradation of CCD's represents the only ionizing-radiation induced effect on the Long Duration Exposure Facility (LDEF) optical systems components that has been observed

    Investigation of the effects of long duration space exposure on active optical system components

    This experiment was exposed to the space environment for 6 years on the Long Duration Exposure Facility (LDEF). It investigated quantitatively the effects of the long-duration space exposure on the relevant performance parameters of a representative set of electron-optic system components, including lasers, radiation detectors, filters, modulators, windows, and other related components. It evaluated the results and implications of the measurements indicating real or suspected degradation mechanisms. This information will be used to establish guidelines for the selection and use of components for space-based, electro-optic systems

    We study the problem of stability and instability of extreme Reissner-Nordstrom spacetimes for linear scalar perturbations. Specifically, we consider solutions to the linear wave equation on a suitable globally hyperbolic subset of such a spacetime, arising from regular initial data prescribed on a Cauchy hypersurface crossing the future event horizon. We obtain boundedness, decay and non-decay results. Our estimates hold up to and including the horizon. The fundamental new aspect of this problem is the degeneracy of the redshift on the event horizon.     Limitations in Predicting Radiation-Induced Pharmaceutical Instability during Long-Duration Spaceflight

    As human spaceflight seeks to expand beyond low-Earth orbit, NASA and its international partners face numerous challenges related to ensuring the safety of their astronauts, including the need to provide a safe and effective pharmacy for long-duration spaceflight. Historical missions have relied upon frequent resupply of onboard pharmaceuticals; as a result, there has been little study into the effects of long-term exposure of pharmaceuticals to the space environment. Of particular concern are the long-term effects of space radiation on drug stability, especially as missions venture away from the protective proximity of the Earth. Here we highlight the risk of space radiation to pharmaceuticals during exploration spaceflight, identifying the limitations of current understanding. We further seek to identify ways in which these limitations could be addressed through dedicated research efforts aimed towards the rapid development of an effective pharmacy for future spaceflight endeavors.Comment: in press, Nature Microgravit
