    Policy Recommendations for Renewable Heating and Cooling in the United Kingdom

    A Working Document prepared as part of the IEE project "Policy development for improving RES-H/C penetration in European Member States (RES-H Policy)"The RES-H Policy project: The project "Policy development for improving RES-H/C penetration in European Member States (RES-H Policy)" aims at assisting Member State governments in preparing for the implementation of the forthcoming Directive on Renewables as far as aspects related to renewable heating and cooling (RES-H/C) are concerned. Member States are supported in setting up national sector specific 2020/2030 RES-H/C targets. Moreover the project initiates participatory National Policy Processes in which selected policy options to support RES-H/C are qualitatively and quantitatively assessed. Based on this assessment the project develops tailor made policy options and recommendations as to how to best design a support framework for increased RES-H/C penetration in national heating and cooling markets. The target countries/regions of the project comprise Austria, Greece, Lithuania, The Netherlands, Poland and UK – countries that represent a variety in regard of the framework conditions for RES-H/C. On the European level the projects assesses options for coordinating and harmonising national policy approaches. This results in common design criteria for a general EU framework for RES-H/C policies and an overview of costs and benefits of different harmonised strategies.This Working Document summarises policy recommendations to improve the policy framework for RES-H/C in the United Kingdom. A policy set has been proposed based on the different elements of the policy analysis that has been conducted throughout this project. The document describes the proposed policy instruments and a strategy how to best implement it in the light of the specific national context. It analysis the interaction of the proposed policy set with the existing policy framework (e.g. for the building sector) and provides a proposal for monitoring and evaluating the policy impact on the development of RES-H/C. The report represents a key output of the RES-H Policy project, an EU FP7 funded research project aiming to assist EU Member States in selecting support options for increased renewable heat. It draws on modelling carried out by the Vienna University of Technology and The Dutch Energy Research Centre (ECN) as well as qualitative assessment by the authors. The body of literature in this field is very narrow, particularly given the much less advanced state of renewable heat policy and the significance of heat in developed countries, where it accounts for 40-50% of national energy use.European Commission through the IEE programm

    Overview of progress in European medium sized tokamaks towards an integrated plasma-edge/wall solution

    Integrating the plasma core performance with an edge and scrape-off layer (SOL) that leads to tolerable heat and particle loads on the wall is a major challenge. The new European medium size tokamak task force (EU-MST) coordinates research on ASDEX Upgrade (AUG), MAST and TCV. This multi-machine approach within EU-MST, covering a wide parameter range, is instrumental to progress in the field, as ITER and DEMO core/pedestal and SOL parameters are not achievable simultaneously in present day devices. A two prong approach is adopted. On the one hand, scenarios with tolerable transient heat and particle loads, including active edge localised mode (ELM) control are developed. On the other hand, divertor solutions including advanced magnetic configurations are studied. Considerable progress has been made on both approaches, in particular in the fields of: ELM control with resonant magnetic perturbations (RMP), small ELM regimes, detachment onset and control, as well as filamentary scrape-off-layer transport. For example full ELM suppression has now been achieved on AUG at low collisionality with n = 2 RMP maintaining good confinement HH(98,y2) 0.95. Advances have been made with respect to detachment onset and control. Studies in advanced divertor configurations (Snowflake, Super-X and X-point target divertor) shed new light on SOL physics. Cross field filamentary transport has been characterised in a wide parameter regime on AUG, MAST and TCV progressing the theoretical and experimental understanding crucial for predicting first wall loads in ITER and DEMO.     Multidisciplinary Views on Applying Explicit and Implicit Motor Learning in Practice: An International Survey

    Background A variety of options and techniques for causing implicit and explicit motor learning have been described in the literature. The aim of the current paper was to provide clearer guidance for practitioners on how to apply motor learning in practice by exploring experts' opinions and experiences, using the distinction between implicit and explicit motor learning as a conceptual departure point. Methods A survey was designed to collect and aggregate informed opinions and experiences from 40 international respondents who had demonstrable expertise related to motor learning in practice and/or research. The survey was administered through an online survey tool and addressed potential options and learning strategies for applying implicit and explicit motor learning. Responses were analysed in terms of consensus (>= 70%) and trends (>= 50%). A summary figure was developed to illustrate a taxonomy of the different learning strategies and options indicated by the experts in the survey. Results Answers of experts were widely distributed. No consensus was found regarding the application of implicit and explicit motor learning. Some trends were identified: Explicit motor learning can be promoted by using instructions and various types of feedback, but when promoting implicit motor learning, instructions and feedback should be restricted. Further, for implicit motor learning, an external focus of attention should be considered, as well as practicing the entire skill. Experts agreed on three factors that influence motor learning choices: the learner's abilities, the type of task, and the stage of motor learning (94.5%; n = 34/36). Most experts agreed with the summary figure (64.7%; n = 22/34). Conclusion The results provide an overview of possible ways to cause implicit or explicit motor learning, signposting examples from practice and factors that influence day-to-day motor learning decisions.published_or_final_versio
