    Spacecraft Orbit Determination System

    Get PDF
The present invention relates to a resident space object orbit determination system comprising a high efficiency module for determining a resident space object\u27s orbit and a highly efficient method for determining same. Applicants developed a method and system to determine the orbits of residence space objects including resident space objects that do not reflect energy that is directed at them and/or may be coated to minimize the ability to accurately see such resident space objects. Thus, a method, a module and a system for making such determinations that can easily and inexpensively be added to an early warning reentry system is provided

Aerospace Vehicle Navigation And Control System Comprising Terrestrial Illumination Matching Module For Determining Aerospace Vehicle Position And Attitude

    Get PDF
The present invention relates to an aerospace vehicle navigation and control system comprising a terrestrial illumination matching module for determining spacecraft position and attitude. The method permits aerospace vehicle position and attitude determinations using terrestrial lights using an Earth-pointing camera without the need of a dedicated sensor to track stars, the sun, or the horizon. Thus, a module for making such determinations can easily and inexpensively be made onboard an aerospace vehicle if an Earth-pointing sensor, such as a camera, is present

Workplace Diversity Training: Evoking Change or Reinforcing the Status Quo?

    Get PDF
In order to effectively support diversity initiatives in our institutions or to develop workplace diversity programs, we need to first define and deconstruct the issues which impede diversity initiatives. The purpose of this roundtable is to discuss how we define diversity; the role social identity plays in supporting and hindering workplace diversity initiatives; the impact of organizational culture or monoculturism on diversity initiative; and ways to address the issues of dominance which undergird organizations

Probing the Role of the Barrier Layer in Magnetic Tunnel Junction Transport

Magnetic tunnel junctions with a ferrimagnetic barrier layer have been studied to understand the role of the barrier layer in the tunneling process - a factor that has been largely overlooked until recently. Epitaxial oxide junctions of highly spin polarized La0.7Sr0.3MnO3 and Fe3O4 electrodes with magnetic NiMn2O4 (NMO) insulating barrier layers provide a magnetic tunnel junction system in which we can probe the effect of the barrier by comparing junction behavior above and below the Curie temperature of the barrier layer. When the barrier is paramagnetic, the spin polarized transport is dominated by interface scattering and surface spin waves; however, when the barrier is ferrimagnetic, spin flip scattering due to spin waves within the NMO barrier dominates the transport.Comment: 10 pages, 3 figure

    Tagged Arithmetic

    Get PDF
A special tagged arithmetic system has been developed for use with FORTRAN pro grams written to process experimental data. The tagged arithmetic system carries a condition code with every numerical value and uses a special output to call attention to answers computed by using questionable input data. The questionable input data may result from instrumentation o r data recording system malfunctions, which can cause ill-conditioned calculations that result in process-time faults or error conditions.https://thekeep.eiu.edu/archives_armstead_publications/1000/thumbnail.jp

Domain Restriction Zones: An Evolution of the Military Exclusion Zone

    Get PDF
Since the early part of the twenty-first century, US adversaries have expanded their military capabilities within and their access to new warfighting domains. When faced with the growth of adversaries’ asymmetric capabilities, the means, tactics, and strategies previously used by the US military lose their proportional effectiveness. To avoid such degradation of capability, the operational concept of the military exclusion zone (MEZ) should be revised to suit the modern battlespace while also addressing the shifts in national policy that encourage diplomacy over military force. The concept and development of domain restriction zones (DRZs) increase the relevancy of traditional MEZs in the modern battlespace, allowing them to address problems associated with cross-domain and multidomain capabilities. The growth of adversary capabilities provides a clear rationale for the implementation of DRZs through all levels of force application within the competition continuum

Redating shuidonggou locality 1 and implications for the initial upper paleolithic in east asia

    Get PDF
A review of recently published temporal data from Shuidonggou Locality 1 indicates that a 40-43 cal ka date for the inception of Initial Upper Paleolithic (IUP) blade-oriented technologies in East Asia is warranted. Comparison of the dates from Shuidonggou to other Asian IUP dates in Korea, Siberia, and Mongolia supports this assertion, indicating that the initial appearance of the IUP in East Asia generally corresponds in time to the fluorescence of the IUP in eastern Europe and western Asia. This conclusion preliminarily suggests that either a version of the IUP originated independently in East Asia just prior to 40 cal ka, or more likely, that an early, initial diffusion of the IUP into East Asia occurred ~41 cal ka, a hypothesis consistent with current estimates for the evolution or arrival of modern humans in the region. © 2014 by the Arizona Board of Regents on behalf of the University of Arizona

An Integrated Space Test Lexicon: A Taxonomy for the Integrated Test and Evaluation of Space Systems

    Get PDF
The proposed Integrated Space Test Lexicon is intended to amalgamate the numerous definitions of integrated (IT or IT&E), development test (DT or DT&E), and operational test (OT or OT&E) into unified, service-wide definitions, aligned with the Space Test Enterprise Vision. Refining such definitions will help distill the core characteristics of these fundamental test types to first identify space system activities composing what is traditionally known as DT and OT, then to provide a means of how these activities fit into the IT paradigm and support space system development. In forging a common understanding of how DT and OT support space systems and capabilities, this lexicon will facilitate the foundation for an IT architecture, specifically the National Space Training and Testing Complex and the larger enterprise-level operational test and training infrastructure

The Multiple Meanings of “Hybrid”: Studying Adult Student Experiences in Hybrid (Web-Enhanced) Classes While Learning How to do Qualitative Research

    Get PDF
This paper has a two-fold or “hybrid” purpose: (1) to discuss the results of a qualitative study of adult students experiences of web-enhanced or hybrid classes, and (2) to briefly discuss the process of learning to do qualitative research while conducting this study in a qualitative research methods class
