Gateways as inter-modal nodes in different ages: The Venetian region, eighteenth to twentieth centuries

This paper focuses on the theoretical implications of a regional case studyfor the analysis of transportation networks and gateway functions. Thestarting point is the result of a research on the changing role of gateways, and on the relocation of the gateway function from one city to a series ofcities in the Venetian region from the eighteenth to the twentieth century.Against this evolution, I test the validity and usefulness of a definition of thegateway as a point of inter-modal exchange for its historical interpretation.Changing transport technologies involve different organisations of inter-modal exchanges, and imply more or less intense economic functions ofgateway cities. These changes intertwine with political events and deci-sions, and more general economic changes: they could at the same time beread as an effect of these transformations, and as a causal factor. From this perspective, a study of intermodality shows to be useful to shed new lighton specific changes in the structure of urban hierarchie

Francesco Ferrara, il primo degli economisti cafoscarini

The paper presents the important personality of the great Italian economist Francesco Ferrara who has been the first Director of the new School of Commerce founded in Venice in 1868. The paper is divided in two parts: the first part presents the main features of Francesco Ferrara as an economist, showing how he was clearly a supporter of a free-market oriented vision of the economic analysis and of the economic policy, not liking at all a vision of the economic analysis separated from the political implications, but definitely favouring a political economy vision. He was a sharp opponent of socialism, although admiring the logical power of Marx's thought, but not Marxian ideas. But he was also an opponent of intermediate visions leading to mediations in the field of economic policy. His rather radical positions led him to resign from the role of minister of Finance. In the second part the paper shows how Ferrara accepted the proposal of Luigi Luzzatti to be appointed as director of new School of Commerce of Ca' Foscari in summer 1868; the paper shows how the relations between Ferrara and Luzzatti were characterized by polemical moments, both because of the lines followed by Ferrara in appointing the professors of the new school and because of the openness shown by Luzzatti, and not liked at all by Ferrara, towards policies showing a favorable attitude towards social interventions. Eventually the disagreements were solved. Finally, the paper shows how Ferrara succeeded in appointing at Ca' Foscari some of the most important Italian economists of his time, such as Maffeo Pantaleoni

Is the Median Palatine Cyst a Distinct Entity?

Report of a Case A 59-year-old man sought our attention for a dental abscess in the maxillary palatal site that was successfully treated with antibiotics. A panoramic radiograph was obtained, and a radiolucent area was evidenced in the maxillary median site (Fig 1). The patient had undergone surgery for a right maxillary inflammatory apical cyst about 5 years earlier. A computed tomography maxillary scan was performed that confirmed a wide radiolucent area, well separated from the teeth, on the median line of the palatal aspect (Figs 2, 3). The patient denied pain, purulent discharge, nasal congestion, or constitutional signs of fever, shakes, chills, night sweats, or weight loss. Teeth near the lesion presented after root canal therapy and a fixed bridge; no nasal floor elevation was noted during nasal cavity examination with a nasal speculum. After an explanation of risks and benefits, the patient provided informed consent. Under local anesthesia with 2% mepivacaine and conscious sedation with intravenous diazepam, the cyst was enucleated with preservation of the nasopalatine bundle, which was anterior to the cyst (Figs 2-4); the defect was then closed primarily with resorbable sutures. The patient was discharged on the same day, and the postoperative period was uneventful. On histopathologic examination, the surgical specimen fulfilled all 5 criteria required to define a median maxillary cyst, because no evidence of hyaline cartilage, large vascular spaces, nerve trunks, or accessory salivary gland tissue was found in the cyst\u2019s wall (Figs 5, 6). Therefore the diagnosis of inflamed cyst of uncertain origin containing keratin was made

Retrieval of blade implants with piezosurgery: two clinical cases.

In this work an ultrasound device was used to perform an ostectomy for the removal of blade implants in order to save as much bone tissue as possible, so that root form implants might later be inserted. Two patients underwent surgery for the removal of two blade implants (one maxillary, the other mandibular) that were no longer functional. The peri-implant ostectomy was carried out with a piezoelectric surgery device. The instrument demonstrated to be effective and precise during ostectomy, providing an extremely thin cutting line. During the course of the operation and at controls after 7 and 30 days, patients did not show any relevant complications and both still had sufficient alveolar bone to be treated with root form implants. The piezosurgery device proved to be an effective instrument in interventions requiring a significant saving of bone tissue, extreme precision in cutting, and respect of soft tissues
