    Computation of a three-dimensional flow in a square microchannel: a comparison between a particle method and a finite volume method

    Traditional grid-based numerical methods, such as finite volume method (FVM), are not suitable to simulate multiphase biofluids (such as blood) at the microscale level. Alternatively, meshfree Lagrangian methods can deal with two or more finely dispersed phases moving relatively to each other. The Moving Particle Semi-Implicit Method (MPS), used in this study, is a deterministic particle method based on a Lagrangian technique to simulate incompressible flows. The advantages of particle methods over traditional grid-based numerical methods have motivated several researchers to implement them into a wide range of studies in computational biomicrofluidics. The main aim of this paper is to evaluate the accuracy of the MPS method by comparing it with numerical simulations performed by an FVM. Hence, simulations of a Newtonian fluid flowing through a constriction were performed for both methods. For the MPS, a section of the channel of 3011.511.5 m was simulated using periodic boundary conditions.     Bubbles moving in blood flow in a microchannel network: the effect on the local hematocrit

    Air inside of blood vessels is a phenomenon known as gas embolism. During the past years, studies have been performed to assess the influence of air bubbles in microcirculation. In this study, we investigated the flow of bubbles in a microchannel network with several bifurcations, mimicking part of a capillary system. Thus, two working fluids were used, composed by sheep red blood cells (RBCs) suspended in a Dextran 40 solution with different hematocrits (5% and 10%). The experiments were carried out in a polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) microchannel network fabricated by a soft lithography. A high-speed video microscopy system was used to obtain the results for a blood flow rate of 10 µL/min. This system enables the visualization of bubble formation and flow along the network. The results showed that the passage of air bubbles strongly influences the cell’s local concentration, since a higher concentration of cells was observed upstream of the bubble, whereas a lower local hematocrit was visualized at the region downstream of the bubble.     Herbivore-Induced Plant Volatiles Can Serve as Host Location Cues for a Generalist and a Specialist Egg Parasitoid

    Herbivore-induced plant volatiles are important host finding cues for larval parasitoids, and similarly, insect oviposition might elicit the release of plant volatiles functioning as host finding cues for egg parasitoids. We hypothesized that egg parasitoids also might utilize HIPVs of emerging larvae to locate plants with host eggs. We, therefore, assessed the olfactory response of two egg parasitoids, a generalist, Trichogramma pretiosum (Tricogrammatidae), and a specialist, Telenomus remus (Scelionidae) to HIPVs. We used a Y-tube olfactometer to tests the wasps’ responses to volatiles released by young maize plants that were treated with regurgitant from caterpillars of the moth Spodoptera frugiperda (Noctuidae) or were directly attacked by the caterpillars. The results show that the generalist egg parasitoid Tr. pretiosum is innately attracted by volatiles from freshly-damaged plants 0–1 and 2–3 h after regurgitant treatment. During this interval, the volatile blend consisted of green leaf volatiles (GLVs) and a blend of aromatic compounds, mono- and homoterpenes, respectively. Behavioral assays with synthetic GLVs confirmed their attractiveness to Tr. pretiosum. The generalist learned the more complex volatile blends released 6–7 h after induction, which consisted mainly of sesquiterpenes. The specialist T. remus on the other hand was attracted only to volatiles emitted from fresh and old damage after associating these volatiles with oviposition. Taken together, these results strengthen the emerging pattern that egg and larval parasitoids behave in a similar way in that generalists can respond innately to HIPVs, while specialists seems to rely more on associative learning

    Análise comparativa entre café produzido a pleno Sol e no sistema agroflorestal em Machadinho D'Oeste - RO.

    O principal objetivo deste trabalho é fazer uma análise comparativa via produtividade agrícola, com intuito de valorar os serviços ambientais de café em sistema agroflorestal (sombreado) versos café a pleno sol, a partir de uma amostra de 172 pequenos agricultores familiares que plantam e produzem café na área de assentamento agrícola em Machadinho d'Oeste, RO, na fronteira agrícola da Amazônia. Os produtores são acompanhados sistematicamente pela equipe da Embrapa Monitoramento por Satélite por mais de 22 anos. Em 20087, foi realizado mais um levantamento de campo, por intermédio de dados declaratórios pelos produtores rurais, em toda a amostra de propriedades familiares que serviu como base para este trabalho. Os dados da produtividade média agrícola dos dois sistemas de cultivos foram comparados pelo teste t a nível de 5% de probabilidade, bem como foram descritos alguns indicadores comparativos de forma descritivas para os dois exemplos positivos secundários oriundos da literatura citada. Os primeiros resultados alcançados mostram a vantagem aparente do café sombreado em relação a pleno sol em Machadinho d'Oeste, RO. Os SAF's com café, neste caso, mostram-se favoráveis do ponto de vista ambiental. Apresentam-se também favoráveis do ponto de vista social pelo bem estar do trabalho, pelo fato do agricultor manejar o café à sombra. E do ponto de vista econômico altamente viável se computar no futuro a possibilidade da exploração da madeira dos SAF's

    Manual and automatic image analysis segmentation methods for blood flow studies in microchannels

    In blood flow studies, image analysis plays an extremely important role to examine raw data obtained by high-speed video microscopy systems. This work shows different ways to process the images which contain various blood phenomena happening in microfluidic devices and in microcirculation. For this purpose, the current methods used for tracking red blood cells (RBCs) flowing through a glass capillary and techniques to measure the cell-free layer thickness in different kinds of microchannels will be presented. Most of the past blood flow experimental data have been collected and analyzed by means of manual methods, that can be extremely reliable, but they are highly time-consuming, user-intensive, repetitive, and the results can be subjective to user-induced errors. For this reason, it is crucial to develop image analysis methods able to obtain the data automatically. Concerning automatic image analysis methods for individual RBCs tracking and to measure the well known microfluidic phenomena cell-free layer, two developed methods are presented and discussed in order to demonstrate their feasibility to obtain accurate data acquisition in such studies.     Testicular germ-cell tumours and penile squamous cell carcinoma: Appropriate management makes the difference

    Germ-cell tumours (GCT) of the testis and penile squamous cell carcinoma (PeSCC) are a rare and a very rare uro-genital cancers, respectively. Both tumours are well defined entities in terms of management, where specific recommendations - in the form of continuously up-to-dated guide lines-are provided. Impact of these tumour is relevant. Testicular GCT affects young, healthy men at the beginning of their adult life. PeSCC affects older men, but a proportion of these patients are young and the personal consequences of the disease may be devastating. Deviation from recommended management may be a reason of a significant prognostic worsening, as proper treatment favourably impacts on these tumours, dramatically on GCT and significantly on PeSCC. RARECAREnet data may permit to analyse how survivals may vary according to geographical areas, histology and age, leading to assume that non-homogeneous health-care resources may impact the cure and definitive outcomes. In support of this hypothesis, some epidemiologic datasets and clinical findings would indicate that survival may improve when appropriate treatments are delivered, linked to a different accessibility to the best health institutions, as a consequence of geographical, cultural and economic barriers. Finally, strong clues based on epidemiological and clinical data support the hypothesis that treatment delivered at reference centres or under the aegis of a qualified multi-institutional network is associated with a better prognosis of patients with these malignancies. The ERN EURACAN represents the best current European effort to answer this clinical need

    Treatment challenges in and outside a network setting: Head and neck cancers

    Head and neck cancer (HNC) is a rare disease that can affect different sites and is characterized by variable incidence and 5-year survival rates across Europe. Multiple factors need to be considered when choosing the most appropriate treatment for HNC patients, such as age, comorbidities, social issues, and especially whether to prefer surgery or radiation-based protocols. Given the complexity of this scenario, the creation of a highly specialized multidisciplinary team is recommended to guarantee the best oncological outcome and prevent or adequately treat any adverse effect. Data from literature suggest that the multidisciplinary team-based approach is beneficial for HNC patients and lead to improved survival rates. This result is likely due to improved diagnostic and staging accuracy, a more efficacious therapeutic approach and enhanced communication across disciplines. Despite the benefit of MTD, it must be noted that this approach requires considerable time, effort and financial resources and is usually more frequent in highly organized and high-volume centers. Literature data on clinical research suggest that patients treated in high-accrual centers report better treatment outcomes compared to patients treated in low-volume centers, where a lower radiotherapy-compliance and worst overall survival have been reported. There is general agreement that treatment of rare cancers such as HNC should be concentrated in high volume, specialized and multidisciplinary centers. In order to achieve this goal, the creation of international collaboration network is fundamental. The European Reference Networks for example aim to create an international virtual advisory board, whose objectives are the exchange of expertise, training, clinical collaboration and the reduction of disparities and enhancement of rationalize migration across Europe. The purpose of our work is to review all aspects and challenges in and outside this network setting planned for the management of HNC patients
