    Joseph Wilkinson, from St. Peters Parish, South Carolina sold the house on lot 13, Washington Ward to Susannah Miller, his mother-in-law in 1807.Joseph married Susannah Miller Wilkinson in 1805 or 1806. They had two children, Joseph Isiah and Sarah Ann Wilkinson. Joseph and Susannah District, South Carolina, Sometime before 1830.died within 3 months of each other in 1815 and 1816. Susannah Miller took custody of the children until her death in 1817. The children were then taken to Colleton District, South Carolina by their uncle, William Wilkinson.     Progress report on a new search for free e/3 quarks in the cores of 10(15) - 10(16) eV air showers

    The Leeds 3 sq m Wilson cloud chamber is being used in a new search for free e/3 quarks close to the axes of 10 to the 15th power - 10 to the 16th power eV air showers. A ratio trigger circuit is used to detect the incidence of air shower cores; the position of the shower center and the axis direction are determined from photographs of current-limited spark chambers. It is thus possible, for the first time, to know where we have looked for quarks in air showers and to select for scanning only those cloud chamber photographs where we have good evidence that the shower axis was close to the chamber. 250 g/sq cm of lead/concrete absorber above the cloud chamber serve to reduce particle densities and make a quark search possible very close to the shower axes.     Mapping the stability of spatial production in integrated crop and pasture systems: Towards zonal management that accounts for both yield and livestock-landscape interactions

    Precision farming technologies are now widely applied within Australian cropping systems. However, the use of spatial monitoring technologies to investigate livestock and pasture interactions in mixed farming systems remains largely unexplored. Spatio-temporal patterns of grain yield and pasture biomass production were monitored over a four-year period on two Australian mixed farms, one in the south-west of Western Australia and the other in south-east Australia. A production stability index was calculated for two paddocks on each farm. An example is given here for one paddock from Western Australia. The stability index described here is unique in that it combines spatial and temporal variation across both cropping and pasture phases. Co-efficient of variation in yield was used as the threshold value for determining stability. Production in each stability zone was analysed statistically for consistency and correlation between the cropping and pasture phases. Results indicate that the stability index can be used in mixed farming systems to assist in management decisions and for the paddock described, spatial and temporal variation in production between crop and pasture phases was strongly correlated

    The illegal practice of combining organophosphates (OPs) with other compounds such as carbamates and pyrethroids, creating ‘streetpesticides’, is common in South Africa. These agents contain mostly unknown quantities of unregulated toxins and contribute to atypicaland unpredictable clinical presentations following human ingestion. We present such a case in a patient with intentional rodenticideingestion. The initial presentation in the emergency department was a classic cholinergic toxidrome, and clinical resolution was achievedafter provision of atropine. This was followed 12 hours later by an acute decompensation resulting from an apparent sympatheticallydriven episode of autonomic instability and acute pulmonary oedema requiring immediate respiratory and haemodynamic support. In ourdiscussion, we explore this secondary decompensation and suggest various pathophysiological explanations for this atypical clinical coursefollowing what had appeared to be OP poisoning.     Plasticity in flower size as an adaptation to variation in pollinator specificity

    1. Mutualisms, including plant-pollinator interactions, are an important component of ecosystems. 2. Plants can avoid the costs of variation in pollinator benefit by maintaining specificity. 3. We hypothesise a novel mechanism to ensure specificity, which takes advantage of the cognitive abilities of specific pollinators to exclude non-specific flower visitors. 4. Inflorescences of the tropical vine genusPsiguriaproduce flowers at regular intervals, with subsequent flowers smaller than predecessors. 5. The principle pollinators,Heliconiusspp., possess an excellent spatial memory. 6. Therefore, decreasing flower size may ensure specific pollination: onceHeliconiusindividuals have learnt the location of an inflorescence they will return, but inconspicuous flowers should reduce visits by non-specific pollinators with poorer spatial memories. 7. We tested the predictions of this hypothesis with field experiments in Panama. We confirmed that flowers on inflorescences are smaller than their predecessors. 8. Paired experiments showed that larger flowers attracted more pollinators and that the presence of an initial large flower increased subsequent visitation byHeliconiusspp. to small flowers, indicating learning behaviour. 9. These results suggest that learning behaviour and decreasing flower size maintain visits from specific pollinators while reducing those from non-specific pollinators. We propose this as a novel mechanism for promoting pollinator specificity and discuss its ecological significance

    Hydrocarbon contaminated water remediation using a locally constructed multi-stage bioreactor incorporated with media filtration

    The present study investigated the coupling effect of biodegradation and media filtration in treating hydrocarbon contaminated water. The study recorded reductions in total petroleum hydrocarbon, total dissolved solids, turbidity and microbial load. The study was essentially a simulated pump and treat process that involved the pumping of hydrocarbon contaminated water for treatment in a locally designed multi-stage bioreactor incorporated with media filtration. A mixed consortium of hydrocarbon-eating microbes was applied in the study. Hydrocarbon-eating microbes were isolated from hydrocarbon contaminated soils obtained from selected mechanic workshops. Bamboo chips and coconut husk chips were applied as support media for microbial attachment within the bioreactor compartment of the treatment setup. Applied support media were approximately 2-4 cm in size. Media filters applied comprised three locally manufactured candle filters two of which were respectively impregnated with granular activated charcoal and sand. The coupling effect of biodegradation and media filtration recorded over 99 % (> 8.7 mg/L) total petroleum hydrocarbon removal. Microbial load reduction ranged from 3.57±0.11E+20 to 7.45±0.26E+20 Colony forming unit/mL, total dissolved solids reduction from 30.00±5.66 to 131.00±0.00 mg/L and turbidity reduction from 39.00±1.41 to 123.50±0.71 nephelometric turbidity units. Biodegradation accounted for 69.70±0.63 and 90.72±2.36 % total petroleum hydrocarbon removal respectively for bamboo chips and coconut husk chips

    Development of an Ultra-Sensitive and Flexible Piezoresistive Flow Sensor Using Vertical Graphene Nanosheets

This paper suggests development of a flexible, lightweight, and ultra-sensitive piezoresistive flow sensor based on vertical graphene nanosheets (VGNs) with a mazelike structure. The sensor was thoroughly characterized for steady-state and oscillatory water flow monitoring applications. The results demonstrated a high sensitivity (103.91 mV (mm/s)−1) and a very low-velocity detection threshold (1.127 mm s−1) in steady-state flow monitoring. As one of many potential applications, we demonstrated that the proposed VGNs/PDMS flow sensor can closely mimic the vestibular hair cell sensors housed inside the semicircular canals (SCCs). As a proof of concept, magnetic resonance imaging of the human inner ear was conducted to measure the dimensions of the SCCs and to develop a 3D printed lateral semicircular canal (LSCC). The sensor was embedded into the artificial LSCC and tested for various physiological movements. The obtained results indicate that the flow sensor is able to distinguish minute changes in the rotational axis physical geometry, frequency, and amplitude. The success of this study paves the way for extending this technology not only to vestibular organ prosthesis but also to other applications such as blood/urine flow monitoring, intravenous therapy (IV), water leakage monitoring, and unmanned underwater robots through incorporation of the appropriate packaging of devices.[Figure not available: see fulltext.

    Winter wheat roots grow twice as deep as spring wheat roots, is this important for N uptake and N leaching losses?

    Cropping systems comprising winter catch crops followed by spring wheat could reduce N leaching risks compared to traditional winter wheat systems in humid climates. We studied the soil mineral N (Ninorg) and root growth of winter- and spring wheat to 2.5 m depth during three years. Root depth of winter wheat (2.2 m) was twice that of spring wheat, and this was related to much lower amounts of Ninorg in the 1 to 2.5 m layer after winter wheat (81 kg Ninorg ha-1 less). When growing winter catch crops before spring wheat, N content in the 1 to 2.5 m layer after spring wheat was not different from that after winter wheat. The results suggest that by virtue of its deep rooting, winter wheat may not lead to high levels of leaching as it is often assumed in humid climates. Deep soil and root measurements (below 1 m) in this experiment were essential to answer the questions we posed

    Nuclear spin-kinetics of 3He in carbonizates with various porosity

    In the present work the NMR relaxation of the gaseous 3He inside carbonizate pores was investigated at temperature 1.5 K. The carbonizates synthesized from fructose and wood of the tropical tree astronium were used. The dependences of the 3He relaxation rates T 1 and T 2 on the gas pressure and the amount of the 3He atoms adsorbed on the surface of pore walls were measured. The analysis of obtained results reveals the existence of the 3He phases inside carbonizate-adsorbed solid layers, liquid and gas. © Springer Science+Business Media, LLC 2007
