Cost-effectiveness of managing Natura 2000 sites: an exploratory study for Finland, Germany, the Netherlands and Poland

Natura 2000 sites are expected to assure the long-term survival of Europe's most valuable and threatened species and habitats. It follows that successful management of the sites is of great importance. Next to goal attainment, cost-effectiveness is increasingly recognised as a key requirement for gaining social and political acceptance for costly conservation measures. We identify and qualitatively examine issues of cost-effectiveness related to the design and implementation of management measures in Natura 2000 sites in Finland, Germany, the Netherlands and Poland. Given the wide variety of management design and implementation options within the four countries, our study is purely of an exploratory nature. We derive recommendations for improving the cost-effectiveness of management in Natura 2000 sites and for future research. Examples of policy recommendations include guaranteeing the availability of funds for longer periods, and ensuring the appropriate allocation of funds between the different tasks of designing and implementing management plans. Further research should examine the cost-effectiveness of controversial suggestions such as, for example, more tailored payment schemes for conservation measures that result in higher ecological outputs but are costly to administer. Moreover, more research is needed to better understand how rules for administrations, as well as rules and governance structures for tasks within administrations, should be designed

Forensic Analysis of the Contents of Nokia Mobile Phones

Acquiring information from a mobile phone is now an important issue in many criminal investigations. Mobile phones can contain large amounts of information which can be of use in an investigation. These include typical mobile device data including SMS, phone records and calendar and diary entries. As the difference between a PDA and a mobile phone is now blurred, the data that can reside on a mobile phone is somewhat endless. This report focuses on the performance of different mobile phone forensic software devices, and reports the findings. All aspects of the different software pieces will be reported, as well as what the investigators extract from the phones. The ability of different software tools to produce certain hash algorithm sums will be analysed, as well as the forensic methods used to extract the information. This area is one which will gain momentum in the future, hence any advances made in the field is an advantage to upcoming studies

Electroconvulsive therapy in a 12-year-old boy with a severe depression

Electroconvulsive therapy (ect) is an uncommon treatment in children and adolescents. This could partially be explained by the fact that a large proportion of the (child and adolescent) psychiatrists have little knowledge on ect in youths. We describe a case of a 12-year-old boy with a severe depression refractory to pharmacotherapy and psychotherapy, in which ect treatment was successful, including six years follow-up. Additionally, this report represents the state of the art concerning the efficacy and safety of ect in youths.</p

Treatment-based classification of low back pain – who are the unclear classifications?

A recent focus in low back pain research has been to identify patient subgroups that respond best to certain treatments. To integrate these subgroup findings into a useable form, a treatment-based classification algorithm for LBP was created.1,2 To allow the algorithm to be comprehensive – eg, provide a classification for all patients – additional criteria are provided to assist therapists’ decisions for patients who do not clearly meet a treatment subgroup (unclear classifications). Recent research found that approximately 34% of patients will receive unclear classifications using the algorithm.3 It has also been shown that the reliability of the classification decision for unclear classifications is poor – significant variability between raters exists.3 In addition to poor reliability, outcomes for patients receiving unclear classifications may be inferior to outcomes of those receiving clear classifications.4 Thus the aim of the present study was to determine if people receiving unclear classifications are different from those with clear classifications in the hopes to refine the classification algorithm

Pharmacodynamic Interactions Between Ketamine and Psychiatric Medications Used in the Treatment of Depression:A Systematic Review

Background The use of ketamine for depression has increased rapidly in the past decades. Ketamine is often prescribed as an add-on to other drugs used in psychiatric patients, but clear information on drug-drug interactions is lacking. With this review, we aim to provide an overview of the pharmacodynamic interactions between ketamine and mood stabilizers, benzodiazepines, monoamine oxidase-inhibitors, antipsychotics, and psychostimulants. Methods MEDLINE and Web of Science were searched. Results Twenty-four studies were included. For lithium, no significant interactions with ketamine were reported. Two out of 5 studies on lamotrigine indicated that the effects of ketamine were attenuated. Benzodiazepines were repeatedly shown to reduce the duration of ketamine's antidepressant effect. For the monoamine oxidase-inhibitor tranylcypromine, case reports showed no relevant changes in vital signs during concurrent S-ketamine use. One paper indicated an interaction between ketamine and haloperidol, 2 other studies did not. Four papers investigated risperidone, including 3 neuroimaging studies showing an attenuating effect of risperidone on ketamine-induced brain perfusion changes. Clozapine significantly blunted ketamine-induced positive symptoms in patients with schizophrenia but not in healthy participants. One paper reported no effect of olanzapine on ketamine's acute psychotomimetic effects. Conclusion Current literature shows that benzodiazepines and probably lamotrigine reduce ketamine's treatment outcome, which should be taken into account when considering ketamine treatment. There is evidence for an interaction between ketamine and clozapine, haloperidol, and risperidone. Due to small sample sizes, different subject groups and various outcome parameters, the evidence is of low quality. More studies are needed to provide insight into pharmacodynamic interactions with ketamine
