Real-space imaging of quantum Hall effect edge strips
We use dynamic scanning capacitance microscopy (DSCM) to image compressible
and incompressible strips at the edge of a Hall bar in a two-dimensional
electron gas (2DEG) in the quantum Hall effect (QHE) regime. This method gives
access to the complex local conductance, Gts, between a sharp metallic tip
scanned across the sample surface and ground, comprising the complex sample
conductance. Near integer filling factors we observe a bright stripe along the
sample edge in the imaginary part of Gts. The simultaneously recorded real part
exhibits a sharp peak at the boundary between the sample interior and the
stripe observed in the imaginary part. The features are periodic in the inverse
magnetic field and consistent with compressible and incompressible strips
forming at the sample edge. For currents larger than the critical current of
the QHE break-down the stripes vanish sharply and a homogeneous signal is
recovered, similar to zero magnetic field. Our experiments directly illustrate
the formation and a variety of properties of the conceptually important QHE
edge states at the physical edge of a 2DEG.Comment: 7 page

Frequent Financial Reporting and Managerial Myopia
Using the transition of US firms from annual reporting to semi-annual reporting and then to quarterly reporting over the period 1950-1970, we provide evidence on the effects of increased reporting frequency on firms’ investment decisions. Estimates from difference-in-differences specifications indicate that increased reporting frequency is associated with an economically large decline in investments. Additional analyses reveal that the decline in investments is most consistent with frequent financial reporting inducing myopic management behavior. Our evidence informs the recent controversial debate about eliminating quarterly reporting for US corporations
Local Charge of the nu=5/2 Fractional Quantum Hall State
Electrons in two dimensions and strong magnetic fields effectively lose their
kinetic energy and display exotic behavior dominated by Coulomb forces. When
the ratio of electrons to magnetic flux quanta in the system is near 5/2, the
unique correlated phase that emerges is predicted to be gapped with
fractionally charged quasiparticles and a ground state degeneracy that grows
exponentially as these quasiparticles are introduced. Interestingly, the only
way to transform between the many ground states would be to braid the
fractional excitations around each other, a property with applications in
quantum information processing. Here we present the first observation of
localized quasiparticles at nu=5/2, confined to puddles by disorder. Using a
local electrometer to compare how quasiparticles at nu=5/2 and nu=7/3 charge
these puddles, we are able to extract the ratio of local charges for these
states. Averaged over several disorder configurations and samples, we find the
ratio to be 4/3, suggesting that the local charges are e/3 at seven thirds and
e/4 at five halves, in agreement with theoretical predictions. This
confirmation of localized e/4 quasiparticles is necessary for proposed
interferometry experiments to test statistics and computational ability of the
