Effect of long range forces on the interfacial profiles in thin binary polymer films
We study the effect of surface fields on the interfacial properties of a
binary polymer melt confined between two parallel walls. Each wall attracts a
different component of the blend by a non-retarded van der Waals potential. An
interface which runs parallel to the surfaces is stabilized in the center of
the film. Using extensive Monte Carlo simulations we study the interfacial
properties as a function of the film thickness, the strength of the surface
forces and the lateral size over which the profiles across the film are
averaged. We find evidence for capillary wave broadening of the apparent
interfacial profiles. However, the apparent interfacial width cannot be
described quantitatively by a simple logarithmic dependence on the film
thickness. The Monte Carlo simulations reveal that the surface fields give rise
to an additional reduction of the intrinsic interfacial width and an increase
of the effective interfacial tension upon decreasing the film thickness. These
modifications of the intrinsic interfacial properties are confirmed by
self-consistent field calculations. Taking account of the thickness dependence
of the intrinsic interfacial properties and the capillary wave broadening, we
can describe our simulation results quantitatively.Comment: to appear in J.Chem.Phy
Electronic properties of disordered corner-sharing tetrahedral lattices
We have examined the behaviour of noninteracting electrons moving on a
corner-sharing tetrahedral lattice into which we introduce a uniform (box)
distribution, of width W, of random on-site energies. We have used both the
relative localization length and the spectral rigidity to analyze the nature of
the eigenstates, and have determined both the mobility edge trajectories as a
function of W, and the critical disorder, Wc, beyond which all states are
localized. We find (i) that the mobility edge trajectories (energies Ec vs.
disorder W) are qualitatively different from those found for a simple cubic
lattice, and (ii) that the spectral rigidity is scale invariant at Wc and thus
provides a reliable method of estimating this quantity -- we find Wc/t=14.5. We
discuss our results in the context of the metal-to-insulator transition
undergone by LiAlyTi{2-y}O4 in a quantum site percolation model that also
includes the above-mentioned Anderson disorder, and show that the effects
produced by Anderson disorder are far less important than those produced by
quantum site percolation, at least in the determination of the doping
concentration at which the metal-to-insulator transition is predicted to occur
A Low-cost Multi-channel Analogue Signal Generator
A scalable multi-channel analogue signal generator is presented. It uses a commercial low-cost graphics card with multiple outputs in a standard PC as signal source. Each color signal serves as independent channel to generate an analogue signal. A custom-built external PCB was developed to adjust the graphics card output voltage levels for a specific task, which needed differential signals. The system furthermore comprises a software package to program the signal shape. The signal generator was successfully used as independent test bed for the ATLAS Level-1 Trigger Pre-Processor, providing up to 16 analogue signals

Faraday waves on a viscoelastic liquid
We investigate Faraday waves on a viscoelastic liquid. Onset measurements and
a nonlinear phase diagram for the selected patterns are presented. By virtue of
the elasticity of the material a surface resonance synchronous to the external
drive competes with the usual subharmonic Faraday instability. Close to the
bicriticality the nonlinear wave interaction gives rise to a variety of novel
surface states: Localised patches of hexagons, hexagonal superlattices,
coexistence of hexagons and lines. Theoretical stability calculations and
qualitative resonance arguments support the experimental observations.Comment: 4 pages, 4figure
Adjacency labeling schemes and induced-universal graphs
We describe a way of assigning labels to the vertices of any undirected graph
on up to vertices, each composed of bits, such that given the
labels of two vertices, and no other information regarding the graph, it is
possible to decide whether or not the vertices are adjacent in the graph. This
is optimal, up to an additive constant, and constitutes the first improvement
in almost 50 years of an bound of Moon. As a consequence, we
obtain an induced-universal graph for -vertex graphs containing only
vertices, which is optimal up to a multiplicative constant,
solving an open problem of Vizing from 1968. We obtain similar tight results
for directed graphs, tournaments and bipartite graphs
Nucleosynthesis in O-Ne-Mg Supernovae
We have studied detailed nucleosynthesis in the shocked surface layers of an
Oxygen-Neon-Magnesium core collapse supernova with an eye to determining if the
conditions are suitable for r process nucleosynthesis. We find no such
conditions in an unmodified model, but do find overproduction of N=50 nuclei
(previously seen in early neutron-rich neutrino winds) in amounts that, if
ejected, would pose serious problems for galactic chemical evolution.Comment: 12 pages, 1 figure, to be published in Astrophysical Journal Letter
The gravitational energy-momentum flux
We present a continuity equation for the gravitational energy-momentum, which
is obtained in the framework of the teleparallel equivalent of general
relativity. From this equation it follows a general definition for the
gravitational energy-momentum flux. This definition is investigated in the
context of plane waves and of cylindrical Einstein-Rosen waves. We obtain the
well known value for the energy flux of plane gravitational waves, and conclude
that the latter exhibit features similar to plane electromagnetic waves.Comment: 20 pages, latex file, no figures, two references added, accepted for

Intrinsic profiles and capillary waves at homopolymer interfaces: a Monte Carlo study
A popular concept which describes the structure of polymer interfaces by
``intrinsic profiles'' centered around a two dimensional surface, the ``local
interface position'', is tested by extensive Monte Carlo simulations of
interfaces between demixed homopolymer phases in symmetric binary (AB)
homopolymer blends, using the bond fluctuation model. The simulations are done
in an LxLxD geometry. The interface is forced to run parallel to the LxL planes
by imposing periodic boundary conditions in these directions and fixed boundary
conditions in the D direction, with one side favoring A and the other side
favoring B. Intrinsic profiles are calculated as a function of the ``coarse
graining length'' B by splitting the system into columns of size BxBxD and
averaging in each column over profiles relative to the local interface
position. The results are compared to predictions of the self-consistent field
theory. It is shown that the coarse graining length can be chosen such that the
interfacial width matches that of the self-consistent field profiles, and that
for this choice of B the ``intrinsic'' profiles compare well with the
theoretical predictions.Comment: to appear in Phys. Rev.
Test of Lorentz Symmetry by using a 3He/129Xe Co-Magnetometer
To test Lorentz symmetry we used a 3He/129Xe co-magnetometer. We will give a
short summary of our experimental setup and the results of our latest
measurements. We obtained preliminary results for the equatorial component of
the background field interacting with the spin of the bound neutron: b_n < 3.72
x 10^(-32) GeV (95 C.L.).Comment: Presented at the Fifth Meeting on CPT and Lorentz Symmetry,
