    The twist-2 Compton operator and its hidden Wandzura-Wilczek and Callan-Gross relations

    Power corrections for virtual Compton scattering at leading twist are etermined at operator level. From the complete off-cone representation of the twist-2 Compton operator integral representations for the trace, antisymmetric and symmetric part of that operator are derived. The operator valued invariant functions are written in terms of iterated operators and may lead to interrelations. For matrix elements they go over into relations for generalized parton distributions. -- Reducing to the s-channel relevant part one gets operator pre-forms of the Wandzura-Wilczek and the (target mass corrected) Callan-Gross relations whose structure is exactly the same as known from the case of deep inelastic scattering; taking non-forward matrix elements one reproduces earlier results [B. Geyer, D. Robaschik and J. Eilers, Nucl. Phys.     Localization of Matter Waves in 2D-Disordered Optical Potentials

    We consider ultracold atoms in 2D-disordered optical potentials and calculate microscopic quantities characterizing matter wave quantum transport in the non-interacting regime. We derive the diffusion constant as function of all relevant microscopic parameters and show that coherent multiple scattering induces significant weak localization effects. In particular, we find that even the strong localization regime is accessible with current experimental techniques and calculate the corresponding localization length.Comment: 4 pages, 3 figures, figures changed, references update

    Large-Eddy Simulations of Fluid and Magnetohydrodynamic Turbulence Using Renormalized Parameters

    In this paper a procedure for large-eddy simulation (LES) has been devised for fluid and magnetohydrodynamic turbulence in Fourier space using the renormalized parameters. The parameters calculated using field theory have been taken from recent papers by Verma [Phys. Rev. E, 2001; Phys. Plasmas, 2001]. We have carried out LES on 64364^3 grid.     Experimental properties of Bose-Einstein condensates in 1D optical lattices: Bloch oscillations, Landau-Zener tunneling and mean-field effects

    We report experimental results on the properties of Bose-Einstein condensates in 1D optical lattices. By accelerating the lattice, we observed Bloch oscillations of the condensate in the lowest band, as well as Landau-Zener (L-Z) tunneling into higher bands when the lattice depth was reduced and/or the acceleration of the lattice was increased. The dependence of the L-Z tunneling rate on the condensate density was then related to mean-field effects modifying the effective potential acting on the condensate, yielding good agreement with recent theoretical work. We also present several methods for measuring the lattice depth and discuss the effects of the micromotion in the TOP-trap on our experimental results.Comment: 11 pages, 14 figure

    Proteomic analysis of embryonic kidney development: Heterochromatin proteins as epigenetic regulators of nephrogenesis

    Elucidation of the mechanisms underlying the nephrogenesis will boost enormously the regenerative medicine. Here we performed 2-D gel-based comparative proteome analyses of rat embryonic kidney from different developmental stages. Out of 288 non-redundant identified proteins, 102 were common in all developmental stages. 86% of the proteins found in E14 and E16 were identical, in contrast only 37% of the identified proteins overlap between E14 and P1. Bioinformatics analysis suggests developmental stage-specific pathway activation and highlighted heterochromatin protein 1 (Cbx1, Cbx3, Cbx5) and Trim28 as potential key players in nephrogenesis. These are involved in the epigenetic regulation of gene silencing and were down-regulated in the course of kidney development. Trim28 is a potential epigenetic regulator of the branching inhibitor Bmp4. Silencing of Trim28 in cultured kidneys resulted in branching arrest. In contrast knockdown of Cbx5 was associated with abnormal ureteric bud growth and slight impairment of branching. ChIP analysis showed that the H3K9me3 distribution on Bmp4 promoters at E14 and E19 inversely correlate with mRNA expression levels. The concentrated expression-pattern of heterochromatin proteins and the negative impact of their silencing on kidney development, suggest an important role in reciprocal and inductive signaling between the ureteric bud and the metanephric mesenchyme

    Soccer: is scoring goals a predictable Poissonian process?

    The non-scientific event of a soccer match is analysed on a strictly scientific level. The analysis is based on the recently introduced concept of a team fitness (Eur. Phys. J. B 67, 445, 2009) and requires the use of finite-size scaling. A uniquely defined function is derived which quantitatively predicts the expected average outcome of a soccer match in terms of the fitness of both teams. It is checked whether temporary fitness fluctuations of a team hamper the predictability of a soccer match. To a very good approximation scoring goals during a match can be characterized as independent Poissonian processes with pre-determined expectation values. Minor correlations give rise to an increase of the number of draws. The non-Poissonian overall goal distribution is just a consequence of the fitness distribution among different teams. The limits of predictability of soccer matches are quantified. Our model-free classification of the underlying ingredients determining the outcome of soccer matches can be generalized to different types of sports events

    Community perception regarding childhood vaccinations and its implications for effectiveness: a qualitative study in rural Burkina Faso

    Background: Vaccination has contributed to major reductions in global morbidity and mortality, but there remain significant coverage gaps. Better knowledge on the interplay between population and health systems regarding provision of vaccination information and regarding health staff organization during the immunization sessions appears to be important for improvements of vaccination effectiveness. Methods: The study was conducted in the Nouna Health and Demographic Surveillance System (HDSS) area, rural Burkina Faso, from March to April 2014. We employed a combination of in-depth interviews (n = 29) and focus group discussions (n = 4) including children’s mothers, health workers, godmothers, community health workers and traditional healers. A thematic analysis was performed. All material was transcribed, translated and analyzed using the software ATLAS.ti4.2. Results: There was better social mobilization in the rural areas as compared to the urban area. Most mothers know the Expanded Program of Immunization (EPI) target diseases, and the importance to immunize their children. However, the great majority of informants reported that mothers don’t know the vaccination schedule. There is awareness that some children are incompletely vaccinated. Mentioned reasons for that were migration, mothers being busy with their work, the practice of not opening vaccine vials unless a critical number of children are present, poor interaction between women and health workers during immunization sessions, potential adverse events associated with vaccination, geographic inaccessibility during rainy season, and lack of information. Conclusions: Well organized vaccination programs are a key factor to improve child health and there is a clear need to consider community perceptions on program performance. In Burkina Faso, a number of factors have been identified which need attention by the EPI managers for further improvement of program effectiveness

    Absolute rate coefficients for photorecombination of berylliumlike and boronlike silicon ions

    We report measured rate coefficients for electron-ion recombination for Si10+ forming Si9+ and for Si9+ forming Si8+, respectively. The measurements were performed using the electron-ion merged-beams technique at a heavy-ion storage ring. Electron-ion collision energies ranged from 0 to 50 eV for Si9+ and from 0 to 2000 eV for Si10+, thus, extending previous measurements for Si10+ [Orban et al. 2010, Astrophys. J. 721, 1603] to much higher energies. Experimentally derived rate coefficients for the recombination of Si9+ and Si10+ ions in a plasma are presented along with simple parameterizations. These rate coefficients are useful for the modeling of the charge balance of silicon in photoionized plasmas (Si9+ and Si10+) and in collisionally ionized plasmas (Si10+ only). In the corresponding temperature ranges, the experimentally derived rate coefficients agree with the latest corresponding theoretical results within the experimental uncertainties.Comment: 17 pages, 7 figures, 3 tables, 66 references, submitted to the J.
