Measuring the effective phonon density of states of a quantum dot
We employ detuning-dependent decay-rate measurements of a quantum dot in a
photonic-crystal cavity to study the influence of phonon dephasing in a
solid-state quantum-electrodynamics experiment. The experimental data agree
with a microscopic non-Markovian model accounting for dephasing from
longitudinal acoustic phonons, and identifies the reason for the hitherto
unexplained difference between non-resonant cavity feeding in different
nanocavities. From the comparison between experiment and theory we extract the
effective phonon density of states experienced by the quantum dot. This
quantity determines all phonon dephasing properties of the system and is found
to be described well by a theory of bulk phonons.Comment: 5 pages, 3 figures, submitte
Efficient qubit detection using alkali earth metal ions and a double STIRAP process
We present a scheme for robust and efficient projection measurement of a
qubit consisting of the two magnetic sublevels in the electronic ground state
of alkali earth metal ions. The scheme is based on two stimulated Raman
adiabatic passages (STIRAP) involving four partially coherent laser fields. We
show how the efficiency depends on experimentally relevant parameters: Rabi
frequencies, pulse widths, laser linewidths, one- and two-photon detunings,
residual laser power, laser polarization and ion motion.Comment: 14 pages, 15 figure
Individual- and Neighbourhood-Level Indicators of Subjective Well-Being in a Small and Poor Eastern Cape Township: The Effect of Health, Social Capital, Marital Status, and Income
Our study used multilevel regression analysis to identify individual- and neighbourhood-level factors that determine individual-level subjective well-being in Rhini, a deprived suburb of Grahamstown in the Eastern Cape province of South Africa. The Townsend index and Gini coefficient were used to investigate whether contextual neighbourhood-level differences in socioeconomic status determined individual-level subjective well-being. Crime experience, health status, social capital, and demographic variables were assessed at the individual level. The indicators of subjective well-being were estimated with a two-level random-intercepts and fixed slopes model. Social capital, health and marital status (all p < .001), followed by income level (p < .01) and the Townsend score (p < .05) were significantly related to individual-level subjective well-being outcomes. Our findings showed that individual-level subjective well-being is influenced by neighbourhood-level socioeconomic status as measured by the Townsend deprivation score. Individuals reported higher levels of subjective well-being in less deprived neighbourhoods. Here we wish to highlight the role of context for subjective well-being, and to suggest that subjective well-being outcomes may also be defined in ecological terms. We hope the findings are useful for implementing programs and interventions designed to achieve greater subjective well-being for people living in deprived areas
Space-time defects and teleparallelism
We consider the class of space-time defects investigated by Puntigam and
Soleng. These defects describe space-time dislocations and disclinations
(cosmic strings), and are in close correspondence to the actual defects that
arise in crystals and metals. It is known that in such materials dislocations
and disclinations require a small and large amount of energy, respectively, to
be created. The present analysis is carried out in the context of the
teleparallel equivalent of general relativity (TEGR). We evaluate the
gravitational energy of these space-time defects in the framework of the TEGR
and find that there is an analogy between defects in space-time and in
continuum material systems: the total gravitational energy of space-time
dislocations and disclinations (considered as idealized defects) is zero and

Galaxy Counterparts of metal-rich Damped Lyman-alpha Absorbers - I: The case of the z=2.35 DLA towards Q2222-0946
We have initiated a survey using the newly commissioned X-shooter
spectrograph to target candidate relatively metal-rich damped Lyman-alpha
absorbers (DLAs). The spectral coverage of X-shooter allows us to search for
not only Lyman-alpha emission, but also rest-frame optical emission lines. We
have chosen DLAs where the strongest rest-frame optical lines ([OII], [OIII],
Hbeta and Halpha) fall in the NIR atmospheric transmission bands. In this first
paper resulting from the survey, we report on the discovery of the galaxy
counterpart of the z_abs = 2.354 DLA towards the z=2.926 quasar Q2222$-0946.
This DLA is amongst the most metal-rich z>2 DLAs studied so far at comparable
redshifts and there is evidence for substantial depletion of refractory
elements onto dust grains. We measure metallicities from ZnII, SiII, NiII, MnII
and FeII of -0.46+/-0.07, -0.51+/-0.06, -0.85+/-0.06, -1.23+/-0.06, and
-0.99+/-0.06, respectively. The galaxy is detected in the Lyman-alpha, [OIII]
lambda4959,5007 Halpha emission lines at an impact parameter of about 0.8
arcsec (6 kpc at z_abs = 2.354). We infer a star-formation rate of 10 M_sun
yr^-1, which is a lower limit due to the possibility of slit-loss. Compared to
the recently determined Halpha luminosity function for z=2.2 galaxies the
DLA-galaxy counterpart has a luminosity of L~0.1L^*_Halpha. The emission-line
ratios are 4.0 (Lyalpha/Halpha) and 1.2 ([OIII]/Halpha). The Lyalpha line shows
clear evidence for resonant scattering effects, namely an asymmetric,
redshifted (relative to the systemic redshift) component and a much weaker
blueshifted component. The fact that the blueshifted component is relatively
weak indicates the presence of a galactic wind. The properties of the galaxy
counterpart of this DLA is consistent with the prediction that metal-rich DLAs
are associated with the most luminous of the DLA-galaxy counterparts.Comment: 9 pages, 7 figures. Accepted for publication in MNRA
Cancer mortality in the United Kingdom: projections to the year 2025
The purpose of this study was to project mortality rates in the United Kingdom for the period 2006–2025 for 21 major cancers on the basis of the observed trends in mortality rates during 1971–2005, and to estimate the implication in terms of expected deaths. Age-period-cohort models were applied to official statistics. The projected decrease in age-standardised mortality rates for all cancers from 2003 to 2023 was 17% in men and 16% in women. Future mortality rates were projected to decline for most cancer sites. In men, there were small projected increases in mortality rates from cancers of the oral cavity, oesophagus and melanoma, with a larger projected increase (14% over 20 years) in mortality of liver cancer. In women, the only projected increase (18%) was for corpus uteri. The numbers of deaths will increase for most cancers, with a 30% increase in all cancers projected for men and a 12% increase projected for women. Mortality rates from cancer as a whole have been falling in the United Kingdom since 1990, and this decline was projected to continue into the future as well as the declining rates in both sexes for most cancers. Phases and relativity in atomic gravimetry
The phase observable measured by an atomic gravimeter built up on stimulated
Raman transitions is discussed in a fully relativistic context. It is written
in terms of laser phases which are invariant under relativistic gauge
transformations. The dephasing is the sum of light and atomic contributions
which are connected to one another through their interplay with conservation
laws at the interaction vertices. In the case of a closed geometry, a compact
form of the dephasing is written in terms of a Legendre transform of the laser
phases. These general expressions are illustrated by discussing two techniques
used for compensating the Doppler shift, one corresponding to chirped
