    Get PDF
The concept of a society based on information and knowledge is becoming the norm in every country, including Spain. The need to have well-designed information policies that allow us to come to terms with the new upsurge of media, technology and services that has taken place in our society is discussed first. Information policies required by these changes in society have been implemented in Spain and are described in relation to the new challenges of the “Society of Knowledge.” Similarly, the background and past efforts made in the field of information policy in Spain are analysed, along with the latest government projects that comprise an attempt to get this country to form part of the “Information Society” with the help of the supra-national information policy of the European Union

Study on the use of metadata for digital learning objects in university institutional repositories (MODERI)

    Get PDF
Metadata is a core issue for the creation of repositories. Different institutional repositories have chosen and use different metadata models, elements and values for describing the range of digital objects they store. Thus, this paper analyzes the current use of metadata describing those Learning Objects that some open higher educational institutions' repositories include in their collections. The goal of this work is to identify and analyze the different metadata models being used to describe educational features of those specific digital educational objects (such as audience, type of educational object, learning objectives, etc.). Also discussed is the concept and typology of Learning Objects (LO) through their use in University Repositories. We will also examine the usefulness of specifically describing those learning objects, setting them apart from other kind of documents included in the repository, mainly scholarly publications and research results of the Higher Education institution.En prens

This article offers an introduction about the current situation of local press in the Madrid area as well as the results of a study about the use and practice in their archives and documentation centers. The study was made in 12 of the main Madrid local press groups by means of interviews and visits to those media. Among the results obtained it’s worth to highlight the massive use of information technologies and the lack of awareness of the media about the historic value and the possibilities of a standardized treatment of the documents

Effect of the Addition of Alkaline Earth and Lanthanide Metals for the Modification of the Alumina Support in Ni and Ru Catalysts in CO2 Methanation

In order to reduce greenhouse gas emissions, which are reaching alarming levels in the atmosphere, capture, recovery, and transformation of carbon dioxide emitted to methane is considered a potentially profitable process. This transformation, known as methanation, is a catalytic reaction that mainly uses catalysts based on noble metals such as Ru and, although with less efficiency, on transition metals such as Ni. In order to improve the efficiency of these conventional catalysts, the effect of adding alkaline earth metals (Ba, Ca, or Mg at 10 wt%) and lanthanides (La or Ce at 14 wt%) to nickel (13 wt%), ruthenium (1 wt%), or both-based catalysts has been studied at temperatures between 498 and 773 K and 10 bar pressure. The deactivation resistance in presence of H2S was also monitored. The incorporation of La into the catalyst produces interactions between active metal Ni, Ru, or Ru-Ni and the alumina support, as determined by the characterization. This fact results in an improvement in the catalytic activity of the 13Ni/Al2O3 catalyst, which achieves a methane yield of 82% at 680 K for 13Ni/14La-Al2O3, in addition to an increase in H2S deactivation resistance. Furthermore, 89% was achieved for 1Ru-13Ni/14La-Al2O3 at 651 K, but it showed to be more vulnerable to H2S presence

Falta el Póster presentado en el evento. Este documento es el Paper derivado del Poster publicado en el Libro de Actas del Congreso. This study analyzes the present use of metadata describing the educational resources that some universities include in the collections of their institutional repositories (IRs). The goal is to test the viability of implementing value-added services by offering educational resources from IRs in addition to those available from learning object repositories (LOR), based on their metadata. We identify and analyze the different metadata models in a sample of university IRs, concentrating on: the use of one or multiple metadata schemas coexisting in the repository; the use of educational metadata schemas and application profiles such as IEEE LOM or DC-Ed; the possible extensions (qualifiers or any refinements) to DC-Simple; the specific metadata elements used to describe educational features (such as audience, type of educational material, learning objectives, etc.) and the values of the metadata elements, especially the use of specific vocabularies for elements of educational interest

Demonstrating HIVE and HIVE-ES: Supporting Term Browsing and Automatic Text Indexing with Linked Open Vocabularies

    Get PDF
Abstract y presentación presentados en el WorkshopThe HIVE (Helping Interdisciplinary Vocabulary Engineering) and HIVE-España (ES) projects both support dynamic, automatic metadata generation using multiple vocabularies. This demonstration will present both the HIVE and HIVE-ES projects and showcase the overarching HIVE framework and functionalities, and give insight into the broader issues relating to linked open vocabularies—LOV. HIVE relies on the Simple Knowledge Organization System (SKOS) and the Kea++/Maui algorithms, which enable more sophisticated terminological selection compared to frequency counts. Baseline studies provide some positive, yet mixed results, and a framework for further study. The adequacy of HIVE and HIVE-ES's searching and browsing capabilities are required to be addressed; and the research should target SKOS use for different types of vocabularies (thesaurus vs. subject heading lists) and, specially on the performance of the text indexing algorithms used depending on the type of vocabulary, the features of the training set documents and those indexed, and the language of all of them
