Relevance of analyzing the movie «Contagion» (2011) for learning clinical and epidemiological methods thru medical education

Background: The films are a useful resource that has been widely used to facilitate learning in the health sciences education and particularly, in medicine. In this study we present the experience of the analysis of the movie Contagion (2011) in the course of clinical and epidemiological methods. Objective: To identify if the learning objectives were met with the learning activity that involves the film, in addition to describing the way in which students express the concepts learned and their perceptions about the learning activity and the film. Participants: Undergraduate students, in the fourth year of medical education at Marista University. Methods: We conducted a content analysis of the written essays of two generations of students. Results: After analyzing 96 written reports, we observed that students better clearly understood the real?life application of the course themes, they incorporated new concepts and reinforced them through additional revisions and also obtained a holistic perspective of the interrelationship of the epidemiological and clinical methodology. Conclusion: The analysis of the film Contagion is an appropriate activity, useful in the education of the clinical and epidemiological methods, according to the students´ written discourse.</p

From fiction to reality: Tissue regeneration in relation to Ransom Riggs´ «Tales of the Peculiar»

Ransom Riggs´ wealthy cannibals, deals with the history of the peculiar inhabitants of the village of Swampmuck, who were humble workers who lived on agriculture and possessed the amazing ability to complete regeneration of limbs, same that earned them their doom before the arrival of civilized and wealthy cannibals that were avid to acquire limbs for their sustenance. The cannibals´ proposal was very clear, they wanted to buy body parts from the inhabitants of the village, and as the self-perception of the farmers changed, and their desire to possess large amounts of money, gold and jewelry in return, had a devastating impact on the inhabitants of the village. In this article, the wealthy cannibals story is taken as a reference of contextualizing this fictional story to today’s society, trying to glimpse the potential impact on health care and prevention that could derive from a potential manipulation of stem cells to regenerate human tissues. Thus, we discuss the scope of this regenerative health medicine, given the chronic degenerative diseases epidemiological trends and at the same time, we explore the ethical implications that this could lead manipulation of stem cells is already an emerging experimental mode.Los caníbales generosos de Ransom Riggs, aborda la historia de los habitantes peculiares de la aldea de Swampmuck, quienes eran trabajadores humildes que vivían de la agricultura y poseían la asombrosa capacidad de regeneración completa de sus extremidades, misma que les valió su perdición ante la llegada de caníbales civilizados con alto poder adquisitivo. En la película Los otros (2001) de Alejandro Amenábar, los espectadores somos testigos de la lucha constante por la vida y por la salud que Grace enfrenta diariamente, una lucha contra el efecto de nada menos, que el sol mismo. La trama nos permite sentir la ansiedad, el estrés y la frustración que caracteriza a los habitantes de la mansión, ante una situación que finalmente, se resolvería de manera definitiva con el alto costo de su propia vida. The others  (2001), film wrote and directed by Alejandro Amenábar, makes us witnesses of the struggle and constant battle of Grace for keeping their children healthy against the effect of the sun.  The plot allows us to feel the anxiety, stress and frustration that characterizes the inhabitants of the mansion, before a situation that finally, was resolved definitively with the high cost, their own life. Finally, death turns out to be for the inhabitants, a revealing and liberating way that allows them to recover joy and serenity

She was re-admitted to hospital a few days later with an exacerbation of her dyspnoea.DiscussionThis case highlights the importance of following the clinical practice guidelines and the standard procedures for the diagnosis of B. pertussis, while the epidemiological context of patients should always be considered. It is important to correctly identify the aetiological agent, as the specific treatment is based on the aetiology, and both of them determine the prognosis of the patients

Theoretical and practical flebotomy skills among first-semester medicine students at the Montagne Simulation Center, Mérida - México

Introducción. El uso de simuladores de pacientes humanos es una estrategia eficaz en la enseñanza de procedimientos clínicos. Sin embargo, existe poca información para ayudar a los profesores a mejorar sus estrategias docentes permitiéndoles mejorar las experiencias de aprendizaje de acuerdo a la edad o el sexo de los alumnos que emplean este tipo de simulación. Objetivos. Identificar si existen diferencias por sexo o edad en asociación a las habilidades de los alumnos del primer semestre de medicina para la flebotomía. Diseño. Cuasiexperimental. Lugar. Centro de Simulación Médica Montagne de la Universidad Marista de Mérida. Participantes. Estudiantes de primer semestre de la licenciatura en medicina. Intervenciones. Intervención educativa del proceso de flebotomía con toma de muestra, empleando simuladores de alta fidelidad. Para el análisis, se evaluó la asociación de las variables de edad y sexo con el desempeño de los alumnos. Principales medidas de los resultados. Se analizaron las evaluaciones prácticas y teóricas. Para la evaluación práctica se aplicó una rúbrica de 20 ítems y se promediaron las puntuaciones de las esferas teóricas y prácticas de los alumnos. Resultados. Se identificó que las mujeres desempeñaron mejor sus habilidades prácticas (p&lt;0,03) aún en el modelo de regresión lineal ajustado por edad y grupo. Discusión. El mejor desempeño en la práctica de flebotomía entre las alumnas de medicina difícilmente sea un hallazgo aislado, pues puede derivarse de las habilidades para la comunicación interpersonal, misma que también puede ser reforzada en los alumnos del sexo masculino.Introduction. The use of human patient simulators is an effective strategy in the teaching of clinical procedures. However, there is little information to help teachers improve their teaching strategies, allowing them to improve learning experiences according to the age or sex of students who use this type of simulation. For the analysis, sociodemographic variables were associated with the performance of the students. Main result measures. The practical and theoretical evaluations were analyzed. For the practical evaluation, a rubric of 20 items was applied and the scores of the theoretical and practical areas of the students were averaged. Results. It was identified that women performed their practical skills better (p &lt;0.03) even in the linear regression model adjusted for age and group. Discussion. The best performance in the practice of phlebotomy among medical students is hardly an isolated finding, since they could derive from the skills for interpersonal communication, which can also be reinforced in male students
