This article is based on field work in Kimbanguist research sites in Congo and Belgium since 1996. Obstacles relating to my personal position and its receptivity by Kimbanguists are discussed at the outset. Next, I focus on the methodological difficulties associated with the diversity of Kimbanguist sites. The concept of ethnoscape developed by Arjun Appadurai helps us reflect on the processes and modes of identity-related (re)configurations of groups dispersed all over the planet. The article ends with a discussion about displacements beyond the Kimbanguist sites. Multi-sited ethnography and the metaphor of ‘tracking’ theorised by George Marcus throws new light on the specificity of this research

Dozon, Jean-Pierre.

Abstract : The research reported in this paper was inspired by the observation of an apparent inconsistency. Many Kimbanguists took an active part in the presidential elections of 2006 in DRC, either as candidates of different parties or as militants, whereas Church doctrine seems to be incompatible with such a commitment in real politics. First, because the Kimbanguist Church affirmed from its beginnings an apolitical attitude. Second, and more fundamentally, because Kimbanguist theological-political doctrine is indifferent, if not hostile to democracy. It is this incompatibility between doctrine and real practice that I outline here. The article shows that the gap between the Kimbanguist theological-political project, on the one hand, and the current political reality, on the other hand, is temporary, and that it is up to history, conceived of in an eschatological perspective, to reduce it. In fact, the millenarianism that underlies the Kimbanguist doctrine postpones in a teleologic manner the realisation of the theological-political project

Equatorial insolation: from precession harmonics to eccentricity frequencies

Since the paper by Hays et al. (1976), spectral analyses of climate proxy records provide substantial evidence that a fraction of the climatic variance is driven by insolation changes in the frequency ranges of obliquity and precession variations. However, it is the variance components centered near 100 kyr which dominate most Upper Pleistocene climatic records, although the amount of insolation perturbation at the eccentricity driven periods close to 100-kyr (mainly the 95 kyr- and 123 kyr-periods) is much too small to cause directly a climate change of ice-age amplitude. Many attempts to find an explanation to this 100-kyr cycle in climatic records have been made over the last decades. Here we show that the double maximum which characterizes the daily irradiation received in tropical latitudes over the course of the year is at the origin in equatorial insolation of not only strong 95 kyr and 123 kyr periods related to eccentricity, but also of a 11-kyr and a 5.5-kyr periods related to precession

The Shape of Food: An analysis of urban agricultural shapes in LisbonÂŽs Greater Area: Socializing with Food: ParedesÂŽs Pedagogical Horta

The relevance of the food system has been magnified through its production phase, namely urban agriculture and its association with the ecological, social and health values that currently have been gaining momentum. However, in the profusion of available studies published, its morphology and urban impact have not been sufficiently mentioned. The present study seeks to rectify this by contributing with an analysis of Lisbon’s Greater Area planning and morphological models, to inform future projects about their effects in the urban territory and its population. This research identifies existing shapes and the economic, social and planning issues that influence them. The study concludes urban agriculture is not being used to its full potential by Lisbon’s Greater Area municipalities, emerging as merely a socially exclusive recreational equipment and as a landscaping instrument, subject to market trends. Greater strides must be taken if this subject is to respond to the current social and ecological sustainability goals

The morphological impact of municipal planning instruments on urban agriculture

    Get PDF
With the growth of urban population, humanity faces new challenges concerning urban food provision. Urban planning is paramount to guarantee a sustainable functioning of the several systems which operate within the urban realm, including the food system. However, while it is widely acknowledged that urban planning would benefit from the integration of urban agriculture, which operates at the production stage of the food system, it is less clear what are the morphological impacts of planning instruments on urban space, in terms of urban agriculture. This paper tries to address this gap, while focusing on one particular area of Portugal, Lisbon and its surrounding territory (Lisbon’s Greater Area). The proposed methodological approach aims to trace the perception of urban agriculture by municipal planning instruments (Municipal Master Plans) and identify their impact in contemporary urban agriculture solutions. It concludes that current planning regulations in Lisbon’s Greater Area are specifically focused on morphological solutions that give preference to urban agriculture uses related to leisure and aesthetic solutions, in determinant of design solutions that tackle economic growth or ecological diversity
