    Four dimensional "old minimal" N=2 supersymmetrization of R^4

    We write in superspace the lagrangian containing the fourth power of the Weyl tensor in the "old minimal" d=4, N=2 supergravity, without local SO(2) symmetry. Using gauge completion, we analyze the lagrangian in components. We find out that the auxiliary fields which belong to the Weyl and compensating vector multiplets have derivative terms and therefore cannot be eliminated on-shell. Only the auxiliary fields which belong to the compensating nonlinear multiplet do not get derivatives and could still be eliminated; we check that this is possible in the leading terms of the lagrangian. We compare this result to the similar one of "old minimal" N=1 supergravity and we comment on possible generalizations to other versions of N=1,2 supergravity.Comment: 31 pages, no figures.     Phylogenetic inferences of Atelinae (Platyrrhini) based on multi-directional chromosome painting in Brachyteles arachnoides, Ateles paniscus paniscus and Ateles b. marginatus

    We performed multi-directional chromosome painting in a comparative cytogenetic study of the three Atelinae species Brachyteles arachnoides, Ateles paniscus paniscus and Ateles belzebuth marginatus, in order to reconstruct phylogenetic relationships within this Platyrrhini subfamily. Comparative chromosome maps between these species were established by multi-color fluorescence in situ hybridization ( FISH) employing human, Saguinus oedipus and Lagothrix lagothricha chromosome-specific probes. The three species included in this study and four previously analyzed species from all four Atelinae genera were subjected to a phylogenetic analysis on the basis of a data matrix comprised of 82 discrete chromosome characters. The results confirmed that Atelinae represent a monophyletic clade with a putative ancestral karyotype of 2n = 62 chromosomes. Phylogenetic analysis revealed an evolutionary branching sequence \{Alouatta \{Brachyteles \{Lagothrix and Ateles\}\}\} in Atelinae and \{Ateles belzebuth marginatus \{Ateles paniscus paniscus \{Ateles belzebuth hybridus and Ateles geoffroyi\}\}\} in genus Ateles.     Optical fibers with interferometric path length stability by controlled heating for transmission of optical signals and as components in frequency standards

    We present a simple method to stabilize the optical path length of an optical fiber to an accuracy of about 1/100 of the laser wavelength. We study the dynamic response of the path length to modulation of an electrically conductive heater layer of the fiber. The path length is measured against the laser wavelength by use of the Pound-Drever-Hall method; negative feedback is applied via the heater.     New results on the hadronic vacuum polarization to the muon g-2

    Results on the lowest-order hadronic vacuum polarization contribution to the muon magnetic anomaly are presented. They are based on the latest published experimental data used as input to the dispersion integral. Thus recent results on tau to nutau pi pi0 decays from Belle and on e+ e- annihilation to pi+ pi- from BABAR and KLOE are included. The new data, together with improved isospin-breaking corrections for tau decays, result into a much better consistency among the different results.     Self-diffusion in binary blends of cyclic and linear polymers

    A lattice model is used to estimate the self-diffusivity of entangled cyclic and linear polymers in blends of varying compositions. To interpret simulation results, we suggest a minimal model based on the physical idea that constraints imposed on a cyclic polymer by infiltrating linear chains have to be released, before it can diffuse beyond a radius of gyration. Both, the simulation, and recently reported experimental data on entangled DNA solutions support the simple model over a wide range of blend compositions, concentrations, and molecular weights.Comment: 10 pages, 2 figure

    Precision Measurement of KS Meson Lifetime with the KLOE detector

    Using a large sample of pure, slow, short lived K0 mesons collected with KLOE detector at DaFne, we have measured the KS lifetime. From a fit to the proper time distribution we find tau = (89.562 +- 0.029_stat +- 0.043_syst) ps. This is the most precise measurement today in good agreement with the world average derived from previous measurements. We observe no dependence of the lifetime on the direction of the Ks.Comment: 5 pages, 7 figure

    On admissibility criteria for weak solutions of the Euler equations

    We consider solutions to the Cauchy problem for the incompressible Euler equations satisfying several additional requirements, like the global and local energy inequalities. Using some techniques introduced in an earlier paper we show that, for some bounded compactly supported initial data, none of these admissibility criteria singles out a unique weak solution. As a byproduct we show bounded initial data for which admissible solutions to the p-system of isentropic gas dynamics in Eulerian coordinates are not unique in more than one space dimension.Comment: 33 pages, 1 figure; v2: 35 pages, corrected typos, clarified proof

    Gravitational Lorentz Force and the Description of the Gravitational Interaction

    In the context of a gauge theory for the translation group, we have obtained, for a spinless particle, a gravitational analog of the Lorentz force. Then, we have shown that this force equation can be rewritten in terms of magnitudes related to either the teleparallel or the riemannian structures induced in spacetime by the presence of the gravitational field. In the first case, it gives a force equation, with torsion playing the role of force. In the second, it gives the usual geodesic equation of General Relativity. The main conclusion is that scalar matter is able to feel anyone of the above spacetime geometries, the teleparallel and the metric ones. Furthermore, both descriptions are found to be completely equivalent in the sense that they give the same physical trajectory for a spinless particle in a gravitational field.Comment: Equations (44)-(47) correcte
