Imaging techniques that can be used to translate seismic and electromagnetic wave signals into visual representation are briefly discussed. The application of these techniques is illustrated on the example of determining the subsurface structure of a proposed power plant. Imaging makes the wave signals intelligible to the non-geologists. Impedance camera: a system for determining the spatial variation of electrical conductivity

A data collection and data interpretation method is presented for predicting, from measurements made on the periphery of the core sample, the electrical conductivity distribution within core samples. This method uses an array of electrodes on the periphery to probe through the core sample. Surprisingly accurate detail can be seen in the estimated conductivity distribution. This method has been demonstrated using synthetic examples modeled and analyzed on a computer. Extensions of the procedure may be useful in subsurface geophysical probing and remote probing methods using physical phenomena satisfying Laplace's equation

Brief overview of geophysical probing technology

An evaluation of high-resolution geophysical techniques which can be used to characterize a nulcear waste disposal site is being conducted by the Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory (LLNL) at the request of the US Nuclear Regulatory Commisson (NRC). LLNL is involved in research work aimed at evaluating the current capabilities and limitations of geophysical methods used for site selection. This report provides a brief overview of the capabilities and limitations associated with this technology and explains how our work addresses some of the present limitations. We are examining both seismic and electromagnetic techniques to obtain high-resolution information. We are also assessing the usefulness of geotomography in mapping fracture zones remotely. Finally, we are collecting core samples from a site in an effort to assess the capability of correlating such geophysical data with parameters of interest such as fracture continuity, orientation, and fracture density

Solutions of the scalar Helmholtz equation in the elliptic cylinder coordinate system

A method for determining the eigenvalues for the scalar Helmholtz equation in the elliptic cylinder coordinate system is described. Complex expansion parameters are considered so that numerical results for physical problems involving energy dissipation as well as energy flow can be obtained. Sample numerical results are presented for the eigenvalues, radial eigenfunctions, and angle eigenfunctions. Applications of these results are discussed. (auth
