Inclusive workplaces : a review and model
Organizations continue to be challenged and enriched by the diversity of their workforces. Scholars are increasingly focusing on inclusion to enhance work environments by offering support for a diverse workforce. This article reviews and synthesizes the inclusion literature and provides a model of inclusion that integrates existing literature to offer greater clarity, as well as suggestions for moving the literature forward. We review the inclusion literature consisting of the various foci (work group, organization, leader, organizational practices, and climate) and associated definitions and how it has developed. We then describe themes in the inclusion literature and propose a model of inclusion. Finally, we end by discussing theoretical and practical implications
AN EXPERIMENT IN CONTINGENT VALUATION AND SOCIAL DESIRABILITY
Social desirability (SD) represents the problem of subjects responding with social norms rather than individual values. This paper briefly surveys the SD literature and considers its relevance for contingent valuation (CV) studies. In an empirical study, undergraduate students were administered the Marlowe-Crowne Social Desirability Scale, as well as CV questions. High SD scores were hypothesized to imply a greater likelihood of offering a protest reason for a zero bid and to increase bids for socially desirable commodities. While all hypotheses were not supported, the empirical results suggest that SD can influence CV responses and should not be dismissed prematurely.Research Methods/ Statistical Methods,
Distinguishability of hyperentangled Bell state by linear evolution and local projective measurement
Measuring an entangled state of two particles is crucial to many quantum
communication protocols. Yet Bell state distinguishability using a finite
apparatus obeying linear evolution and local measurement is theoretically
limited. We extend known bounds for Bell-state distinguishability in one and
two variables to the general case of entanglement in two-state variables.
We show that at most classes out of hyper-Bell states can be
distinguished with one copy of the input state. With two copies, complete
distinguishability is possible. We present optimal schemes in each case.Comment: 5 pages, 2 figure
Thinking from Experience in Psychosocial Practice: Reclaiming and Teaching ‘Use of Self’
A course based on psychosocial theory and students' experiences in practice has been taught in the UK, Norway and Quebec. It departs from the classical social work concept ‘use of self’ and aims to help novices in health and social work to understand how the social world is internalised and re-produced and the value of thinking from experience. International developments such as, competency-based education, New Public Management and evidence-based practice reduce opportunities for experiential learning. This trend has been exacerbated by a focus on anti-oppressive practice without a corresponding understanding of how oppressive relations are internalized and enacted by defended and conflicted subjects. Attempts to rectify a relational deficit through traditions of reflective practice and critical reflection are important developments, but could be further strengthened by psychosocial and psychodynamic perspectives. The Role of Email Communications in Determining Response Rates and Mode of Participation in a Mixed-mode Design
This article is concerned with the extent to which the propensity to participate in a web-face-to-face sequential mixed-mode survey is influenced by the ability to communicate with sample members by email in addition to mail. Researchers may be able to collect email addresses for sample members and to use them subsequently to send survey invitations and reminders. However, there is little evidence regarding the value of doing so. This makes it difficult to decide what efforts should be made to collect such information and how to subsequently use it efficiently. Using evidence from a randomized experiment within a large mixed-mode national survey, we find that using a respondent-supplied email address to send additional survey invites and reminders does not affect survey response rate but is associated with an increased proportion of responses by web rather than face to face and, hence, lower survey costs
Developing the next generation of IT Professionals – engaging IT students in the practice of IT Professional ethics
This paper describes the approaches taken to teach IT Professionalism and Professional Ethics to IT students in Sheffield Hallam University. The aim is to help students develop their awareness of the issues around professionalism in IT to the point where it becomes one of their career considerations. We describe how we have worked with three different year groups, basing teaching on IT ethical issues as the core engagement tool. We describe some of the teaching techniques and support tools, and conclude by identifying areas of practice which may be of value to other teacher
First Amendment uses of public space: Manipulation through design?
The concept of the free exchange of ideas, as embodied in the First Amendment of the U.S. Constitution, underpins our notion of a government that works not by consensus or fiat, but by conflict between differing opinions and resolution by secret ballot. Part and parcel of that concept is that not only the vote but the information that leads to decisions in the country ought to be open to all and all should be able to express their opinions.
