Effects of aquatic weed infestations on the fish and wildlife of the Gulf States
This report presents the findings of the Fish and Wildlife Service with regard to: (1) The nature and extent of damages caused by obnoxious weeds to wildlife and fisheries; (2) the economic losses brought about by this damage; and (3) the effects of mechanical and chemical weed control on wildlife and fisheries. Other phases of the water weed problem, such as the history and extent of infestation, biology of the plants, control methods, and public health significance, have been investigated by the U.S. Engineers, the Department of Agriculture, and the Public Health Service
The Liquid-Gas Phase Transitions in a Multicomponent Nuclear System with Coulomb and Surface Effects
The liquid-gas phase transition is studied in a multi-component nuclear
system using a local Skyrme interaction with Coulomb and surface effects. Some
features are qualitatively the same as the results of Muller and Serot which
uses relativistic mean field without Coulomb and surface effects. Surface
tension brings the coexistance binodal surface to lower pressure. The Coulomb
interaction makes the binodal surface smaller and cause another pair of binodal
points at low pressure and large proton fraction with less protons in liquid

Cladoceran birth and death rates estimates
I. Birth and death rates of natural cladoceran populations cannot be measured directly. Estimates of these population parameters must be calculated using methods that make assumptions about the form of population growth. These methods generally assume that the population has a stable age distribution.
2. To assess the effect of variable age distributions, we tested six egg ratio methods for estimating birth and death rates with data from thirty-seven laboratory populations of Daphnia pulicaria. The populations were grown under constant conditions, but the initial age distributions and egg ratios of the populations varied. Actual death rates were virtually zero, so the difference between the estimated and actual death rates measured the error in both birth and death rate estimates.
3. The results demonstrate that unstable population structures may produce large errors in the birth and death rates estimated by any of these methods. Among the methods tested, Taylor and Slatkin's formula and Paloheimo's formula were most reliable for the experimental data.
4. Further analyses of three of the methods were made using computer simulations of growth of age-structured populations with initially unstable age distributions. These analyses show that the time interval between sampling strongly influences the reliability of birth and death rate estimates. At a sampling interval of 2.5 days (equal to the duration of the egg stage), Paloheimo's formula was most accurate. At longer intervals (7.5–10 days), Taylor and Slatkin's formula which includes information on population structure was most accurate
Genetic Relationships of Crown Rust Resistance, Grain Yield, Test Weight, and Seed Weight in Oat
Integrating selection for agronomic performance and quantitative resistance to crown rust, caused by Puccinia coronata Corda var. avenae W.P. Fraser & Ledingham, in oat (Avena sativa L.) requires an understanding of their genetic relationships. This study was conducted to investigate the genetic relationships of crown rust resistance, grain yield, test weight, and seed weight under both inoculated and fungicide-treated conditions. A Design II mating was performed between 10 oat lines with putative partial resistance to crown rust and nine lines with superior grain yield and grain quality potential. Progenies from this mating were evaluated in both crown rust-inoculated and fungicide-treated plots in four Iowa environments to estimate genetic effects and phenotypic correlations between crown rust resistance and grain yield, seed weight, and test weight under either infection or fungicide-treated conditions. Lines from a random-mated population derived from the same parents were evaluated in three Iowa environments to estimate heritabilities of, and genetic correlations between, these traits. Resistance to crown rust, as measured by area under the disease progress curve (AUDPC), was highly heritable (H = 0.89 on an entry-mean basis), and was favorably correlated with grain yield, seed weight, and test weight measured in crown rust-inoculated plots. AUDPC was unfavorably correlated or uncorrelated with grain yield, test weight, and seed weight measured in fungicide-treated plots. Sans measurement of deuterium trapping at dislocations and grain boundaries in palladium
Small angle neutron scattering (SANS) measurements have been made on deformed single crystal and polycrystalline palladium with and without deuterium dissolved in the solution phase at room temperature. The net scattering cross section for the same sample with and without deuterium loading shows a behavior expected from deuterium correlation with dislocations forming rod-like scattering structures. We conclude from these scattering measurements that the trapped deuterium is within 2-3 Burgers vectors of the dislocation core. On average 1-3 deuterons per A are trapped at dislocations in the deformed samples. The measurements indicate the straight, rod-like correlation geometry extends on average 50-100 A along the dislocations. Net scattering from a well annealed polycrystalline palladium sample exhibiting a behavior expected from surfaces has been observed. This net scattering is attributed to deuterium trapped at grain boundaries in the polycrystalline sample. A value of 0.4 +/- 0.2 trapped deuterons per A2 of grain boundary area is calculated from the well annealed polycrystalline scattering measurement.Peer Reviewedhttp://deepblue.lib.umich.edu/bitstream/2027.42/29076/1/0000111.pd
Triggering an eruptive flare by emerging flux in a solar active-region complex
A flare and fast coronal mass ejection originated between solar active
regions NOAA 11514 and 11515 on July 1, 2012 in response to flux emergence in
front of the leading sunspot of the trailing region 11515. Analyzing the
evolution of the photospheric magnetic flux and the coronal structure, we find
that the flux emergence triggered the eruption by interaction with overlying
flux in a non-standard way. The new flux neither had the opposite orientation
nor a location near the polarity inversion line, which are favorable for strong
reconnection with the arcade flux under which it emerged. Moreover, its flux
content remained significantly smaller than that of the arcade (approximately
40 %). However, a loop system rooted in the trailing active region ran in part
under the arcade between the active regions, passing over the site of flux
emergence. The reconnection with the emerging flux, leading to a series of jet
emissions into the loop system, caused a strong but confined rise of the loop
system. This lifted the arcade between the two active regions, weakening its
downward tension force and thus destabilizing the considerably sheared flux
under the arcade. The complex event was also associated with supporting
precursor activity in an enhanced network near the active regions, acting on
the large-scale overlying flux, and with two simultaneous confined flares

The U.S. Inland Creel and Angler Survey Catalog (CreelCat): Development, Applications, and Opportunities
Inland recreational fishing, defined as primarily leisure-driven fishing in freshwaters, is a popular pastime in the USA. State natural resource agencies endeavor to provide high-quality and sustainable fishing opportunities for anglers. Managers often use creel and other angler survey data to inform state- and waterbody-level management efforts. Despite the broad implementation of angler surveys and their importance to fisheries management at state scales, regional and national coordination among these activities is minimal, limiting data applicability for larger-scale management practices and research. Here, we introduce the U.S. Inland Creel and Angler Survey Catalog (CreelCat), a first-of-its-kind, publicly available national database of angler survey data that establishes a baseline of national inland recreational fishing metrics. We highlight research and management applications to help support sustainable inland recreational fishing practices, consider cautions, and make recommendations for implementation
During pregnancy, recreational drug-using women stop taking ecstasy (3,4-methylenedioxy-N-methylamphetamine) and reduce alcohol consumption but continue to smoke tobacco and cannabis
While recreational drug use in UK women is prevalent, to date there is little prospective data on patterns of drug use in recreational drug-using women
immediately before and during pregnancy. A total of 121 participants from a wide range of backgrounds were recruited to take part in the longitudinal
Development and Infancy Study (DAISY) study of prenatal drug use and outcomes. Eighty-six of the women were interviewed prospectively while
pregnant and/or soon after their infant was born. Participants reported on use immediately before and during pregnancy and on use over their lifetime.
Levels of lifetime drug use of the women recruited were high, with women reporting having used at least four different illegal drugs over their lifetime.
Most users of cocaine, 3,4-methylenedioxy-N-methylamphetamine (MDMA) and other stimulants stopped using these by the second trimester and levels
of use were low. However, in pregnancy, 64% of the sample continued to use alcohol, 46% tobacco and 48% cannabis. While the level of alcohol use
reduced substantially, average tobacco and cannabis levels tended to be sustained at pre-pregnancy levels even into the third trimester (50 cigarettes
and/or 11 joints per week). In sum, while the use of ‘party drugs’ and alcohol seems to reduce, levels of tobacco and cannabis use are likely to be
sustained throughout pregnancy. The data provide polydrug profiles that can form the basis for the development of more realistic animal models
Towards Machine Wald
The past century has seen a steady increase in the need of estimating and
predicting complex systems and making (possibly critical) decisions with
limited information. Although computers have made possible the numerical
evaluation of sophisticated statistical models, these models are still designed
\emph{by humans} because there is currently no known recipe or algorithm for
dividing the design of a statistical model into a sequence of arithmetic
operations. Indeed enabling computers to \emph{think} as \emph{humans} have the
ability to do when faced with uncertainty is challenging in several major ways:
(1) Finding optimal statistical models remains to be formulated as a well posed
problem when information on the system of interest is incomplete and comes in
the form of a complex combination of sample data, partial knowledge of
constitutive relations and a limited description of the distribution of input
random variables. (2) The space of admissible scenarios along with the space of
relevant information, assumptions, and/or beliefs, tend to be infinite
dimensional, whereas calculus on a computer is necessarily discrete and finite.
With this purpose, this paper explores the foundations of a rigorous framework
for the scientific computation of optimal statistical estimators/models and
reviews their connections with Decision Theory, Machine Learning, Bayesian
Inference, Stochastic Optimization, Robust Optimization, Optimal Uncertainty
