In-plane ferromagnetism in charge-ordering
The magnetic and transport properties are systematically studied on the
single crystal with charge ordering and divergency in
resistivity below 50 K. A long-range ferromagnetic ordering is observed in
susceptibility below 20 K with the magnetic field parallel to Co-O plane, while
a negligible behavior is observed with the field perpendicular to the Co-O
plane. It definitely gives a direct evidence for the existence of in-plane
ferromagnetism below 20 K. The observed magnetoresistance (MR) of 30 % at the
field of 6 T at low temperatures indicates an unexpectedly strong spin-charge
coupling in triangle lattice systems.Comment: 4 pages, 5 figure

Remote sensing of cloud properties using ground-based measurements of zenith radiance
We have conducted the first extensive field test of two new methods to retrieve optical properties for overhead clouds that range from patchy to overcast. The methods use measurements of zenith radiance at 673 and 870 nm wavelengths and require the presence of green vegetation in the surrounding area. The test was conducted at the Atmospheric Radiation Measurement Program Oklahoma site during September–November 2004. These methods work because at 673 nm (red) and 870 nm (near infrared (NIR)), clouds have nearly identical optical properties, while vegetated surfaces reflect quite differently. The first method, dubbed REDvsNIR, retrieves not only cloud optical depth τ but also radiative cloud fraction. Because of the 1-s time resolution of our radiance measurements, we are able for the first time to capture changes in cloud optical properties at the natural timescale of cloud evolution. We compared values of τ retrieved by REDvsNIR to those retrieved from downward shortwave fluxes and from microwave brightness temperatures. The flux method generally underestimates τ relative to the REDvsNIR method. Even for overcast but inhomogeneous clouds, differences between REDvsNIR and the flux method can be as large as 50%. In addition, REDvsNIR agreed to better than 15% with the microwave method for both overcast and broken clouds. The second method, dubbed COUPLED, retrieves τ by combining zenith radiances with fluxes. While extra information from fluxes was expected to improve retrievals, this is not always the case. In general, however, the COUPLED and REDvsNIR methods retrieve τ to within 15% of each other
Parallel Computing on a PC Cluster
The tremendous advance in computer technology in the past decade has made it
possible to achieve the performance of a supercomputer on a very small budget.
We have built a multi-CPU cluster of Pentium PC capable of parallel
computations using the Message Passing Interface (MPI). We will discuss the
configuration, performance, and application of the cluster to our work in

TIFA, an inflammatory signaling adaptor, is tumor suppressive for liver cancer.
TIFA (TNF receptor associated factor (TRAF)-interacting protein with a Forkhead-associated (FHA) domain), also called T2BP, was first identified using a yeast two-hybrid screening. TIFA contains a FHA domain, which directly binds phosphothreonine and phosphoserine, and a consensus TRAF6-binding motif. TIFA-mediated oligomerization and poly-ubiquitinylation of TRAF6 mediates signaling downstream of the Tumor necrosis factor alpha receptor 1 (TNFaR-I) and interleukin-1/Toll-like receptor 4 (TLR4) pathways. Examining TIFA expression in hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) tissues microarrays, we noted marked decreases TIFA reactivity in tumor versus control samples. In agreement, we found that HCC cell lines show reduced TIFA expression levels versus normal liver controls. Reconstituting TIFA expression in HCC cell lines promoted two independent apoptosis signaling pathways: the induction of p53 and cell cycle arrest, and the activation of caspase-8 and caspase-3. In contrast, the expression of a non-oligomerizing mutant of TIFA impacted cells minimally, and suppression of TIFA expression protected cells from apoptosis. Mice bearing TIFA overexpression hepatocellular xenografts develop smaller tumors versus TIFA mutant tumors; terminal deoxynucleotidyl transferase dUTP nick end labeling staining demonstrates increased cell apoptosis, and decreased proliferation, reflecting cell cycle arrest. Interestingly, p53 has a greater role in decreased proliferation than cell death, as it appeared dispensable for TIFA-induced cell killing. The findings demonstrate a novel suppressive role of TIFA in HCC progression via promotion of cell death independent of p53
Evidence of s-wave pairing symmetry in layered superconductor LiNbO from the specific heat measurement
A high quality superconducting LiNbO polycrystalline sample was
synthesized by deintercalation of Li ions from LiNbO. The field
dependent resistivity and specific heat were measured down to 0.5 K. The upper
critical field is deduced from the resistivity data and
is estimated to be T. A notable specific heat jump is
observed at the superconducting transition temperature K at zero
field. Below , the electronic specific heat shows a thermal activated
behavior and agrees well with the theoretical result of the BCS s-wave
superconductors. It indicates that the superconducting pairing in
LiNbO has s-wave symmetry.Comment: 4 pages, 5 figure
