A three-node C deg element for analysis of laminated composite sandwich shells
A three-node flat shell element with C deg rotation fields has been developed for analysis of arbitrary composite shells. The element may consist of any number of orthotropic layers, each layer having different material properties and angular orientation. The formulation includes coupling between bending and extension, which is essential for analysis of unsymmetric laminates. Shearing deflections are included, since laminated and sandwich construction frequently results in shear stiffness much smaller than bending stiffness. Formulation of the element is straightforward, and calculation of its stiffness matrix is simple and fast. Convergence of solutions with mesh refinement is uniform for both thin and thick shells and is insensitive to element shape, although not as rapid as some other elements that lack one or more capabilities of the newly developed element. Analysis of Surface Integrity in Machining of AISI 304 Stainless Steel Under Various Cooling and Cutting Conditions
Recent studies have shown that machining under specific cooling and cutting conditions can be used to induce a nanocrystalline surface layer in the workspiece. This layer has beneficial properties, such as improved fatigue strength, wear resistance and tribological behavior. In machining, a promising approach for achieving grain refinement in the surface layer is the application of cryogenic cooling. The aim is to use the last step of the machining operation to induce the desired surface quality to save time-consuming and expensive post machining surface treatments. The material used in this study was AISI 304 stainless steel. This austenitic steel suffers from low yield strength that limits its technological applications. In this paper, liquid nitrogen (LN2) as cryogenic coolant, as well as minimum quantity lubrication (MQL), was applied and investigated. As a reference, conventional flood cooling was examined. Besides the cooling conditions, the feed rate was varied in four steps. A large rounded cutting edge radius and finishing cutting parameters were chosen to increase the mechanical load on the machined surface. The surface integrity was evaluated at both, the microstructural and the topographical levels. After turning experiments, a detailed analysis of the microstructure was carried out including the imaging of the surface layer and hardness measurements at varying depths within the machined layer. Along with microstructural investigations, different topological aspects, e.g., the surface roughness, were analyzed. It was shown that the resulting microstructure strongly depends on the cooling condition. This study also shows that it was possible to increase the micro hardness in the top surface layer significantly

XAX: a multi-ton, multi-target detection system for dark matter, double beta decay and pp solar neutrinos
A multi-target detection system XAX, comprising concentric 10 ton targets of
136Xe and 129/131Xe, together with a geometrically similar or larger target of
liquid Ar, is described. Each is configured as a two-phase
scintillation/ionization TPC detector, enhanced by a full 4pi array of
ultra-low radioactivity Quartz Photon Intensifying Detectors (QUPIDs) replacing
the conventional photomultipliers for detection of scintillation light. It is
shown that background levels in XAX can be reduced to the level required for
dark matter particle (WIMP) mass measurement at a 10^-10 pb WIMP-nucleon cross
section, with single-event sensitivity below 10^-11 pb. The use of multiple
target elements allows for confirmation of the A^2 dependence of a coherent
cross section, and the different Xe isotopes provide information on the
spin-dependence of the dark matter interaction. The event rates observed by Xe
and Ar would modulate annually with opposite phases from each other for WIMP
mass >~100 GeV/c^2. The large target mass of 136Xe and high degree of
background reduction allow neutrinoless double beta decay to be observed with
lifetimes of 10^27-10^28 years, corresponding to the Majorana neutrino mass
range 0.01-0.1 eV, the most likely range from observed neutrino mass
differences. The use of a 136Xe-depleted 129/131Xe target will also allow
measurement of the pp solar neutrino spectrum to a precision of 1-2%.Comment: 16 pages with 17 figure

Nearby live virtual machine migration using cloudlets and multipath TCP
A nearby virtual machine (VM) based cloudlet is proposed for mobile cloud computing (MCC) to enhance the performance of real-time resource-intensive mobile applications. Generally, when a mobile device (MD) discovers a cloudlet in the vicinity, it takes time to set up a VM inside the cloudlet before data offloading from the MD to the VM starts. The time between the discovery of the cloudlet and actual offloading of data is considered as the service initiation time. When multiple cloudlets are present in a nearby geographical location, initiating a service with each cloudlet may be frustrating for cloudlet users that moving from one location to another. In order to eliminate the delay caused by the service initiation time after moving away from the source cloudlet, this paper proposes a seamless live VM migration between neighbouring cloudlets. Deconstructing Weight Management Interventions for Young Adults: Looking Inside the Black Box of the EARLY Consortium Trials.
ObjectiveThe goal of the present study was to deconstruct the 17 treatment arms used in the Early Adult Reduction of weight through LifestYle (EARLY) weight management trials.MethodsIntervention materials were coded to reflect behavioral domains and behavior change techniques (BCTs) within those domains planned for each treatment arm. The analytical hierarchy process was employed to determine an emphasis profile of domains in each intervention.ResultsThe intervention arms used BCTs from all of the 16 domains, with an average of 29.3 BCTs per intervention arm. All 12 of the interventions included BCTs from the six domains of Goals and Planning, Feedback and Monitoring, Social Support, Shaping Knowledge, Natural Consequences, and Comparison of Outcomes; 11 of the 12 interventions shared 15 BCTs in common across those six domains.ConclusionsWeight management interventions are complex. The shared set of BCTs used in the EARLY trials may represent a core intervention that could be studied to determine the required emphases of BCTs and whether additional BCTs add to or detract from efficacy. Deconstructing interventions will aid in reproducibility and understanding of active ingredients
Description of inclusive scattering of 4.045 GeV electrons from D
We exploit a relationship between the Structure Functions of nucleons, the
physical deuteron and of a deuteron, composed of point-nucleons to compute
angular distributions of inclusive cross sections of 4.05 GeV electrons. We
report general agreement with data and interpret the remaining discrepancies.
We discuss the potential of the data for information on neutron structure
