Quality-Aware Prototype Memory for Face Representation Learning

Prototype Memory is a powerful model for face representation learning. It enables the training of face recognition models using datasets of any size, with on-the-fly generation of prototypes (classifier weights) and efficient ways of their utilization. Prototype Memory demonstrated strong results in many face recognition benchmarks. However, the algorithm of prototype generation, used in it, is prone to the problems of imperfectly calculated prototypes in case of low-quality or poorly recognizable faces in the images, selected for the prototype creation. All images of the same person, presented in the mini-batch, used with equal weights, and the resulting averaged prototype could be contaminated with imperfect embeddings of such face images. It can lead to misdirected training signals and impair the performance of the trained face recognition models. In this paper, we propose a simple and effective way to improve Prototype Memory with quality-aware prototype generation. Quality-Aware Prototype Memory uses different weights for images of different quality in the process of prototype generation. With this improvement, prototypes get more valuable information from high-quality images and less hurt by low-quality ones. We propose and compare several methods of quality estimation and usage, perform extensive experiments on the different face recognition benchmarks and demonstrate the advantages of the proposed model compared to the basic version of Prototype Memory.Comment: Preprin

Modeling and Controlling the Spread of Epidemic with Various Social and Economic Scenarios

We propose a dynamical model for describing the spread of epidemics. This model is an extension of the SIQR (susceptible-infected-quarantined-recovered) and SIRP (susceptible-infected-recovered-pathogen) models used earlier to describe various scenarios of epidemic spreading. As compared to the basic SIR model, our model takes into account two possible routes of contagion transmission: direct from the infected compartment to the susceptible compartment and indirect via some intermediate medium or fomites. Transmission rates are estimated in terms of average distances between the individuals in selected social environments and characteristic time spans for which the individuals stay in each of these environments. We also introduce a collective economic resource associated with the average amount of money or income per individual to describe the socioeconomic interplay between the spreading process and the resource available to infected individuals. The epidemic-resource coupling is supposed to be of activation type, with the recovery rate governed by the Arrhenius-like law. Our model brings an advantage of building various control strategies to mitigate the effect of epidemic and can be applied, in particular, to modeling the spread of COVID-19.Comment: 14 pages, 6 figures, 5 table

Regard(s) sur le Moyen Âge : Hildegard von Bingen et Christine de Pizan

El tema de este TFG se basa en la mirada de Christine de Pizan e Hildegarda von Bingen sobre su tiempo y en sus respectivos países, Francia y Alemania. A pesar de las divergencias que estas autoras ofrecen sobre la época que les tocó vivir, se llevará a cabo la lectura cruzada de La Cité des Dames de Christine de Pizan y de Scivias de Hildegarda von Bingen. En ambos casos se ofrece una defensa de la intelectualidad femenina, y en el caso de Hildegarda von Bingen el panorama se completa con sus visiones místicas, en las que también tienen cabida recomendaciones sobre el matrimonio y, en este caso, ecos sobre la sexualidad femenina. A pesar de la distancia cronológica y sociocultural, así como del contexto religioso y la complejidad lingüística, ambas obras no dejan de enriquecer la actitud femenina que inspira la perspectiva feminista actual. Si estas escritoras vuelven a llamar la atención en nuestros días, es por su importancia en la representación de la querella de mujeres que se produce en la Baja Edad Media hasta el siglo XVIII. Ahora bien, este Regard(s) sur le Moyen Âge no pretende hacer una lectura comparatista ni contrastiva, sino más bien mencionar la importancia que ambas escritoras tuvieron en su tiempo, lo que inspira el siguiente interrogante: ¿por qué sigue siendo vigente hablar aún de Christine de Pizan e Hildegarda von Bingen?Le thème de ce mémoire de fin d’études est axé sur le regard porté par Christine de Pizan et Hildegarde von Bingen sur le Moyen Âge et sur leurs pays d’origine : la France et l’Allemagne. Malgré les différences que ces écrivaines offrent de leur temps, la lecture croisée de La Cité des Dames de Christine de Pizan y de Scivias de Hildegarde von Bingen sert à mettre en relief leurs particularités et leurs singularités. Toutes les deux proposent une vision valorisante de l’intellectualité féminine, que la perception d’Hildegarde von Bingen complète dans ses visions mystiques, qui accueillent aussi des conseils sur le mariage et la sexualité féminine. Malgré l’écart chronologique et socio-culturel, tout comme du contexte religieux et de la complexité linguistique, ces deux écrivaines enrichissent toujours l’attitude féminine qui inspire les dispositions féministes de nos jours. Si ces deux écrivaines attirent de nouveau l’attention des lecteurs quant à leurs principes à elles, ce n’est que par le rôle qu’elles ont joué dans la querelle des femmes survenue à la fin de Moyen âge et continuée jusqu’au XVIIIe siècle. Or, ce Regard(s) sur le Moyen Âge ne se doit à une lecture comparatiste ou contrastive, mais à l’importance de ces deux écrivaines remarquables dans leur temps, ce qui inspire la question suivante : comment se fit-il que Christine de Pizan et Hildegarde von Bingen sont toujours en vigueur ?Departamento de Filología Francesa y AlemanaGrado en Lenguas Modernas y sus Literatura
